New Top Gear

Just put the US version of Top Gear on.......

Its a little difficult to find, but I actually preferred it to the last couple of JC Top Gear.

Same type of dynamic as JC Top gear, with three guys/friends mucking around and some really bizarre challenges.

(OK some nicked from UK TG, but still very entertaining)

I watched it for the first twenty minutes and gave up when SIARPC started. Also cancelled the series link.

Link from US TG below, so you get the idea.

and a copy from UK

Cheers

Nah sorry but the american version just doesn't do it. It's almost too friendly.. no real taking_the_piss type of banter...

I saw the ozzie version once too.. that was just as crap.

Lets face it, Jeremy Clarkson, Richard Hammond and James May are a very hard act to match yet alone topple like the BBC and Evans are trying to do.

I just skim-watched it on iPlayer.

As much as I got annoyed at Cockson and co smashing up/damaging old cars, the missions/road trips were the only interesting bits.

Star in a reasonably priced car... had to look them up on Google half of the time, zzzzzzz... it got skipped

Anything to do with supercars... nothing to relate to, will never drive or own one.... zzzzzz... it got skipped

Porsche 911 wanking... zzzzzzzz... it got skipped.

It will take a while before it was as slick as it used to be, if Im honest Im a little disappointed they kept the same formula as before as I thought it was getting a bit tired, a bit "same-y".

But I'll tune in again on Sunday.

Same formula but with added americana, as if we haven't already got more than enough of that guff on TV.

I realised that I no longer found Larkson et al entertaining when I watched three-quarters of this episode.

Woeful viewing, and the epitome of overpaid old boys that think they're still funny, when they're really not any more. I gave up on TG at this exact point, and Sunday night's episode was the first I'd seen in a long while. Life's all about change, and I prefer it to things becoming stale, which I really think it had with the three posh amigos.

Just watched it on catchup. Chris evans is trying way too hard. Mind you I've never really liked him. He even tried to put same emphasis on words like clarkson.

^^ Hit the nail on the head for me Mr Wogan. I remember distinctly when that aired too. All the ingredients for IMO what made TG work at its best but if felt a bit stale and contrived and a bit cringeworthy, for the wrong reasons. It had had a brilliant run but it was past it.

I found his war stories documentaries to be the best I've seen Clarkson do, all of them are a really interesting watch. When he's serious and puts his mind to it he's a damn fine journalist.

They're all on YouTube if you haven't seen them and find yourself with a couple of spare hours

So Matt LeBlanc and Rory Reid to be replaced with Freddie Flintoff and Paddy McGuinness.

Nothing against the pair of them but a few thoughts:

1) Top Gear used to be staffed by people who were motoring journalists first and foremost.....the likes of Chris Harris can do the TV presenter bit well but has a massive reserve of car geek passion and knowledge that really shines through. I think that's important - you need someone who is good at the TV bit but who can speak about the subject matter with some authority.

2) Voices within the BBC itself waxed lyrical about how ousting the old guard (Clarkson et al) would be an opportunity to diversify the presenting team beyond three middle aged blokey blokes......hmmmm........This feels like a desperate attempt to try and recreate some of that old Top Gear "bromance" in the presenting team, and try and make Top Gear the way it used to be....

Come on BBC. Take a risk. Have a look at what people are doing on YouTube that is miles better. Stop trying to make it the same as before. Get a decent female presenter in there, its 2018 for God's sake. Three very different presenters giving three very different takes on the world of motoring is what I want to see. Maybe make the third spot a floating presenter and have someone different every week?

TL;DR - I iz dissapoint at predictable new presenter lineup

Agree, Flintoff and McGuinness both seem like they are probably twats in real life.

Chris Harris, Jenson Button and VBH FTW

Can't stand McGuinness.

This, it could be the best TV show ever and I wont be watching simply because of McGuiness (and Flintoff)

Reading this thread makes me happy.  For years I thought I was the only person on the planet that disliked top gear.  Its scripted, middle-class tom-foolery in the sort of cars that I have no interest in and even if I had the money would not buy.

Essentially a car program was converted into an entertainment for all program.  The audience diversity program is a testament to that.  I remember when I was young liking Top Gear a lot.  Now I don't watch it even though I have Amazon Prime and its almost force fed to me.  It used to annoy me paying a TV license to fund such crap and now I am paying for it via Amazon Prime.  I did mean to cancel my Amazon prime this year but unfortunately, I forgot to cancel the direct debit!  It annoys me that I am paying for this rubbish twice - both the BBC version and the Amazon version.

Anyway, at least I know I'm not alone.

Just to conclude - I hate it.  In all formats.

Doesnt matter who they get to front the show unless the format is radically altered....

As with Evans and then Leblanc I'll give the first episode a go.

That way I can be smug because I'm right, or pleasantly surprised that I'm wrong.

It doesn’t really make any odds to me as I haven’t watched it in years, but the fact the utterly utterly pointless floater that is McGuinness is presenter just makes the unwatchable less watchable.

Good grief. I only watch it because of Chris Harris, he's a hero.

At no point did I let his eulogising about the GT 86 make me want to buy one..

Is there a proper motoring review & info programme any more? With Fifth gear moving to Discovery and not on a Free to air channel now, there's no consumer motoring show I'm aware of.

The Clarkson et al. format should have been buried when old new top gear finished. I couldn't watch the first series with Evans at the helm, because the man is a helmet. I didn't warm to the other hosts; Should I give the new new new version a chance?

Youtube isn't the future, it's the present and it's bloody awesome.

I've totally made the switch, it's where most of my viewing takes place now.
