I know, how many more cars do i need?! Well being a sucker for 1 owner retired driver cars I've couldn't resist this Astra that a chap at work was selling.

It was only a few miles away in Felixstowe and at a price i can't refuse, the original owner retired from driving in his 80's and my friend who's friends with the garage owner who looked after it decided to buy it to clean up and sell on but he needed the money fast has his Merc gearbox had broke so I stepped it.

It's a very late September 1991 registered 1.6 L with only 64000 miles, It drives really nicely and is quite pokey, It feels very cheap and basic compared to the Audi but at least it will be cheaper to run and use everyday. It didn't really come with much history apart from a hand written piece of paper from the garage who's serviced it but it's done no miles in years and only recently serviced.

It's pretty original still.

Local dealer plate and sticker, I'll get DMB to make a new front one up for it.

The interior needs a bloody good clean mind! the radio needs a code so if any of you know or have a code generator for a Philips DC670 I'll be very grateful!

Again the boot is full of leaves and twigs so i'm guessing the old boy was into a bit of gardening hence the tow bar.

I was amazed that the bonnet light works still with the headlights, It needs a really good clean though.

And this is the only rust on the car which I'll sort out.

They all do that Sir.....

have to say I fuckin' hated my mark 2, but it COULD NOT BE KILLED.

god knows i tried.

That is really very clean and in good nik for an Astra that old. Looks a great buy.

Well done Trig, that looks utterly shit, I wouldn't give you threepence for it.

A bucket of Autoglym Bumper Care for Mister Trigger please!

If there is any left over, rub it into the joins in the dash panels to reduce the squeaks and creaks.

Platinum gold I believe. I had a Cavalier in the same shade of automotive magnolia.

That was as dull as fuck too.

Looks great Trig. I remember when these littered the roads of Britian, theu were also very popular in Belgium. A friend of my Dad's had one for quite a while.

To be honest i know it's hardly the most exciting thing in the world but at £450 i couldn't say no, it has a years mot too and drives perfect other than a slight miss, not sure if it's from lack of use or ignition module yet.

Everything works (apart from this radio needing the code) and it's quite good fun too. It's all you need from a work hack really!

Quite late for a mk2 as well Triggs. You are clearly an oldgiffermobile whore!

Flippin' lovely. Is it platinum or rembrandt silver? Either way it's fap worthy, especially with those trims.

My first car was one of these.   It was way more fucked than that one in 1996.   Nicely bought.

Triggs if you want a CD player for it with Aux input, you can have it, its a JVC single DIN unit

This was registered only a few weeks before the Mk3's launch so it would be one of the very last sold.

Plugs, leads and a clean inside the cap would probably sort the misfire.

I think that has all been done before but I'll go through it all again.

Looks fantastic. Love the dash on these to this day.

I quite like these and had both ends of the range at the same time for a short while - a B reg 1.6 diesel 4 speed Bedford and a 1.8 CDi Belmont on an E. To be honest I preferred the van and it stayed in the family for years.

As for your towbar and your fond hope the old giffer just used it for an occaisional trip to the tip with some privet cuttings...

Think again, the twin electrics and GB sticker point to a few summers with a Sprite Muskateer on tow across Europe. That's why Mr Giffer plumped for the big engine.

That's a kind offer but i have a few sat here already to use, I just fancied keeping the orginal tape player for now. Damn you Philips and your clever security coded radios!

You're probably spot on there! Mrs T will be definitely be wanting that caravan now!

No problem mate, I bet the old giffer got a good deal on it with the new shape one waiting in the wings, and I'd be willing to agree it's towed something a bit bigger than a trailer

I have never been a fan of vauxhalls since they canned the viva but I do like an astra they just drive so well,

Nice buy can't wait to see it after the tidy up.

Posted

I am very jealous.

That is in utterly amazing condition and I am glad it is in good hands now.

As for the radio code, have you thought about calling up a dealer to see if they can give it to you? I don't know how accommodating your local lot are but when I wasn't given the code when I got the Rover, I popped into the original dealer and they got me the code for the original radio within 2 minutes.

Posted

You would be amazed how many of those GM. radios have the code written on the label. Might be worth a look.

Maybe it's written in the front of the handbook or service book?

Felixstowe is not far from me, I'll keep an eye for this top choddage.
