What company was it?

Twas Autoglass. I hate to blame the guy in the front line, and he's worked right through the pandemic - but 5 minutes more care from him and the back-office doing their job properly (re: providing proper sticky pads and the right seals) and it would have been ok.

What I'm wondering is - is the guy on a gravel drive with a 3 year old Porsche 911 getting the same level of service?

Based on our experiences through Chris' company cars (admittedly not Porsches, but there have been several high-key end Audi's), absolutely yes.

Last time we had to have a screen changed was on a TTRS, and it took them four tries to do it right.

RAC Auto Windscreens made a right mess on my Cayman

Yes, he is.  Ok not a 911, but it was less than 3 years old. And it was at their own base, not on a drive (mine’s mid century modern concrete rather than mock Tudor gravel, btw).

Not sure whether that makes you feel any better.

This thread has been on a bit of a downer lately, so thanks to those who stick with it.  Not sure why I'm saying thanks, it's free entertainment* for you all!  I own a Mondeo MK1 so you don't have to (any more), right?

Although, I'm not very good at making my woes into an amusing story like the late Dave numbers, or into a kind of poetry like @Datsuncog when he's on a roll.

But as @BorniteIdentity knows from the bASe - if the sierra had a Twitter account it would be 'therealbASe' with a blue tick mark - there's no real exit strategy from a basic old Ford.  When Bornite has a wobble with the red peril, I can only say 'I hear you man'.   It's with you for life.

They're like living with an elderly maiden aunt, there are some days when it might be better it was just all over, but the old girl is family when all is said and done, and you want her to make it to a grand old age.

School starts again for my kid next week, and if I expect this car will be back on duty for the 50 mile round trip up hill and down dale, as the Mazda is a bit in the wars at the mo.  And I bet she's the (almost) only kid in the UK that goes to school in K reg Mondy.

Autoglass were very good the other day with me, same with the 'Shatterprufe' windscreen though.  Can't really complain, the bloke worked through the rain outside my house to do it.  started five minutes after he'd got going on my screen.  Sorry you've had so much bother with it mate but it really is a lovely car.  Brought an enormous smile to my face when I last saw it and the blue interior is a thing of beauty.  Absolutely worth it.

If you put a grand down, you can have a Sandero comfort (the one with air-con) for £123 a month for 4 years on the drip. So really all of the last 37 pages are pure madness

Looking back to page 1 you paid a lot less than a grand for this so started with £800 spare to spend on it. Have you spent more than £123 per month on it since purchasing? I doubt it but even if you have this is your car and you appear to like it. For that alone it is worth every penny spent and if you do fall out of love with it you have something to sell at the end, not like a hire car.

I had  a K reg Mondeo in 1996, it was a 1.8 LX saloon K278 OHT bought from Bristol car auction.

Good points. 4 years and 3 months so far out of a £215 car is pretty good....

Anyway, big shout out to @greengartside for going to the breakers today and getting a nice haul of bits from that MK2 he posted in the news thread. Thanks GG!

All useful stuff for me, including more spare side strips for the window, and a new grille. Especially as he has had his own car woes!

No need to change the plugs by mileage, but is has been 4 years....so went for it. I broke one of the old ones (2nd right in pic below) and had the fearz that a bit might have gone down the cylinder - but running nicely, so went and checked the tyres, popped some E5 in while we still can, and had a cruise along the front (busy down there - lots of queues).

Needed the breaker bar to loosen them. Torqued them up with the torque wrench, so should be ok next time.

NGK out...

Have I actually done a 'one spanner' job without any mistakes? Maybe I have!

Back on the (leisurely, bcos furlough) school run.....first long run since March, all good apart from a squeaky brake - let's hope that self heals, but I've never had any brake work done on this car since I've owned it!

The plugs on those are an absolute doddle, in fact most jobs on those cars are simple, thinking back at the time there was a real apathy towards them as they were feared as being difficult to work on compared with the old CVH Sierras, which to be fair were as sophisticated as a horse and cart. There was the big hu ha that the clutch was an expensive job but given a typical Mondeo clutch lasted twice as long as a Sierra clutch it was unwarranted. I remember my dad having the infamous coolant pipe failing, he declared it a garage job, I’ve done plenty of them they’re a doddle. Maybe in 10 years I’ll be griping about how difficult it is to swap a filter on a newer one!

Rimini blue K482 GHK is for sale in Kent. Just in case anyone is interested. 2nd March 1993 Chelmsford registered (Mine is March Built, June registered) so one of the very earliest. Try Mk1+2 Mondeo cars and parts for sale Facebook group.

Needs saving. It's an LX.

Surprisingly good MOT history on that. Any idea on price?

He says around £500, but I think he needs to do a fleet downsize....he's got about 5 MK1/2's for sale. Might be worth a 'bid'.

Old dears, and shiters! I had one. I never really liked it.

I don’t mind those Fusions, they were just the thing for trips to Morrisons and the occasional jaunt to the garden centre. The radio controls are big and solid so you can easily find Radio 4 and the ashtray will hold enough Wethers Original to sustain a return trip to Weston Super Mare. Very important that.

My Mum had a 1.4 Diesel Fusion, 53 plate.  It's amazing how Ford made a car as good as that generation Fiesta (I loved mine), stuck a slightly different body on it and utterly ruined it.  It was gutless and dull.  Returned fantastic MPG - but that was about it.

I'd have one in a heartbeat.

68bhp I think those 1.4 diesels were.

Then again the 1.6 MK4 escort diesel used to haul 5 of us about when I was a kid with about 55 bhp!

Bonded windscreens were certainly around in the 1970s, I think (but can’t be sure) the Rover SD1 had one.

Certainly every time we lifted one with the crane and strap at the breaker’s yard I worked in, the screen cracked.

It drove the boss crazy! - although how he thought the average banger driver in 1992 would get the screen out is another question.

Apparently (i.e. internet hearsay) you can easily break a screen on a MK1 Mondy just by jacking it in the wrong place. Not sure what that says about its structural rigidity!

68bhp is all you need. It's 7 more than I have and everyone still gets in my way.

Can’t see how that would happen, the jacking point is bang under the screen.

Thanks for confirming that, I can't get on ETIS any more, this means the seller's claim that it is the oldest known one left is plausible. I hope someone saves it, it just can't be me.

How did you find the '92 cars - I've never come across them before? I think they were still making Sierras that late in 92...
