Interesting car for daughter No.1

We bought a Clio Mk2 (1999) for daughter No1 to learn to drive in when she was 17, now she's 24 and the Clio looks the worse for wear with rusty arches and lacquer peel on the c pillar. She says she'd like something that looks tidy, prefer 4 doors & 5 seats . She only wants to pay a grand or so.

I suggested loads of things, this is a shortened list below;

Audi A2, She doesn't like the look of it & most have only 4 seats, but I really like them!

Ford Puma. 2 doors so no go, I really like.

VW Golf Mk4 she likes these, but I really don't like the Mk 4 either to look at or drive, but of course it's not for me!

Honda Jazz. Doesn't like as it's for old people!

Fiat Grand Punto. She liked the look, I know nothing about them.

Alfa 147. As above.

Pug 206. She quite likes, I quite like

Rover 25/MG Z whatever it is. She didn't comment I like but what about OMGHGF?

Another Clio, she really likes the one she has (& we got her sister one too) but fancies a change.

Would that V6 Rover 45 on ebay thread eat her out of house and home? I sent her the link she hasn't replied yet, but will likely think I'm now senile.

What do we think about the above, can we suggest anything?

I'm impressed that her first car has lasted from 17 to her being 24 well done

I had a similar discussion with my daughter when she turned 25 and could finally insure something that wasn't a 1.0 polo. She wanted a 5 door hatch, something fairly modern but not too big or complicated. I didn't know what to suggest, but then someone gave me a diesel Fabia...

Fab has done so well that I'm treating it to a timing belt (now 10000 miles overdue and the reason I was given the car) and a service this weekend. She's driving the Laguna.

Also, her 1.0 polo is coming back tomorrow for some work, so that isn't dead yet either!

I'd like the ZX, think she'd think it looks too old

Volvo as above

Also I don't much want her to have a diesel DPF, DMF etc. Also as none of us has ever had one theres a good chance somebody would fill it with petrol!

My 24 year old drives an R reg £100 Rover 600 , she wasn't keen at first after a brand new Fiat 500 at 18 and an MX5, some spectacularly misjudged life choices meant she's back at home ( so much for my home cinema) and was in a beggars and choosers situation when it came to wheels.

That was 18 months ago ,she's sorted her shit out and is now driving the Rover from choice- apparently her friends think it's a really cool old vintage* car. I'm happy that she's driving it and saving for a deposit on a house- then I might get my home cinema - one day.

Astra G - maybe a 1.6 SXi or something. Needs to be reasonable mileage though - and you do have to top the oil regularly.

306 diesel wiv a turbo if you must, could almost be the same car in a different dress.

She probably wants a Lupo with everything already done for £600 so she can spend the rest on women things.

You'll struggle to find one in budget that hasn't been to the moon and back, but my daughter swears by her Civic 2.0S, on her second, she does highish mileage circa 30k a year and neither of them have gone wrong despite her driving the poor sod like she stole it, 196/65 x 15 winnah tyres, usual friction stuff and the clutch isn't a cheap job...she wants another when this ones done its turn.

Haven't had one but i hear good things about similarly aged Corolla though the only one going to be 'interesting' is the T Sport.

When getting my daughters first car she hated micras. So I bought one for her. Low mileage one owner and cheap. She loved it till it got wrote off last year. Started looking for a new one. Took her to a local garage by a college who stocks mostly small cars . She had a sit in a few and picked a jazz. Remarkably reliable and boring.

Honda Civic of the 2002 to 2007 sort. shouldn't be too hard to find a 1.6 for £1k. If she really wants the doors and seats for moving people these have good access and legspace for a hatch. Tough and reliable, good on juice too. Our youngest took over the one my wife bought new 11 years ago and one year on, still hasn't broken it.

You'd get a very decent 206 1.4/1.6 for a grand and the young 'ens seem to like them.  Bought one for my nephew and it's a comfortable, fairly simple car.

I'm currently waiting for her comments from her(she may still be at work). Thank you everyone for the suggestions!

hows about a fiesta?

both smiley one or the model after, a grand should buy a nice one, and they are quiet a nice drive.

if too small the maybe a focus? one of the pre 2008 ones as i think they are better nailled together.

the alfa 147 certainly looks nice, and drive like nothing else, all i will say is that a friend bought one brand new and the elecrics were problematic even then. plus a chap at work has bought a mito recently and has had no end of problems, even after new springs, wishbones, and a steering column its still not right, so maybe alfa hasn;t changed its spots yet?

or maybe an astra? in mark 4 flavour they seem to take allsorts of abuse and just keep on gong, plu they do come with a smallish engine option.

Some good suggestions here, like the Alfa 147 AND the Honda Civic. Considered a Seat Ibiza 2003-2009 model perchance?

I would have suggested the N16 Almera, mine is quite brisk, i can get all the family in it and a canoe on the roof, seems sure-footed enough, has airbags front and side, getting just about 40MPG from the 1.5 and likely to be boringly reliable.

BUT

Is for old people innit.
