I wanted a new car...

Don't knock all new cars though*. I recently travelled a reasonable distance in a friends Grand Picasso and it was quite a pleasant place to be, with a light airy and comfortable interior. Unfortunately I couldn't reach the dash, so I couldn't tell if it was hard, soft or made from jelly. ;) It had a full set of bells and whistles and the 2 litre diesel  will probably last longer than the 1.6 that all the so-called eco versions that just about everything gets lumbered with and are less economical than their big brothers. Best of all for him, only a year old, but down from £27k to £16k (from a car supermarket of course) I wouldn't have one , but I can see why some would, but why buy brand new when you can save a fortune by something nearly new and still with a decent warranty.

*I may be pissing into the wind making a statement like this within the walls of Autoshite :)

And by the way that friggin Mondeo is 4.9 metres long!!  What the?

And they moaned the market for Granadas/Omegas was dead.

This site is NOT ABOUT NEW CARS.

I like to read about shite cars of all ages - which includes new ones - but then I'm just an ordinary member. Does this site have a "what's acceptable" guide created by the owner / moderators ?

Are you sure that's a car? Sounds more like a cigar to me

Well it's no oil painting :)

Nobody here really likes new cars. But if some of us don't go near them every now and again we'll run out of reasons not to like them. OP was reinforcing what we believe to be true. Carry on!

I thought of this thread when I was in a work colleague’s Pug 208 today and found myself quite liking it. It has broken down (wouldn't start) several times in the past though (coming up to 3 years old).

I'm guilty of criticising cars for cheap and nasty plastics too, and it's a good point about the dash being covered in dust - my car has a horribly cheap looking and feeling dash but it too is covered in dust because it's never touched by anyone. The switchgear feels solid enough and is good enough to use, so I suppose that's all that matters really. It's not a fashionable car though, which cars at least try to be now.

I pi$$ on all your onions......

MY car (8yr.. from brand new @ depreciation of £1k p/a = owes me nowt)... is ALL hard plastics. Like travelling around INSIDE a photocopier casing!!  :-P

..never licked the dash.... DO like the smell of the leather seats on a sunny day  8)

No.

The OP did a sensible thing and tried each of his possible wants. Predictably they were shite in various ways.

To me anything from 1990 is kind of new. I make no apology for that.

I have actually tapped a plastic dash or two, maybe I need to become a motoring journalist, whoohoo :) Maybe not ;)

No mention of any Hyundai cars being tried. Would recommend :)

Just buy a car from someone on here and enjoy every moment of the experience and you will never lust after a brand new car again.

Morgans might be made of wood but the rest is so horrible I'd rather walk.

The dash is particularly dreary.

This is how I see things as well. Modern cars do absolutely nothing for me, a 24 year old. I find myself shaking my head while reading Classic Car Weekly and finding it full of things under 15 years old, such as MX5s, modern Citroens and Rovers.

As for the OP, there are so many different, characterful cars out there which you could own for the fraction of the price of a dull Insignia or whatever other bollocks you were suggesting. Pretty much any 1980s car is capable of being used daily and I personally would own something like this any day over some modern shit that everyone else has. Of course, if you go back to the 70s and before you have to be more dedicated to keep the car running, but it's well worth it IMHO, as the older you go the more interesting and fun the car!

The only way I would have a nearly-new or new car is if I was in a job that refused to let me opt out of having a company car. Or if I needed a nearly new car for work due to licensing regulations, like NorfolknWeigh. Hope this helps!

The problem is, a lot of people on here don't actually get it, they buy a generic ten year old car and say it's shite just to try and join in and be part of the forum. I never understand people who say they love old crap cars yet drive a modern and have no intention of buying old shite cars.

Everyones opinion of what is and isn't shite differs on here, can modern cars be shite? If you say so....

Modern cars just aren't on my radar and by modern cars I mean post 2000, I don't know if it's because I'm poor and I can't afford a new car or if it's because everything after 2000 is too common and I'm not a fan of the styles etc...

Buy another Rover 45, that's all the 'newest' new car you'll ever need.

Relax, it's a Rover.

Today's ten year old car is tomorrow 's shite.

Think of it as test purchasing.

I fall into the bracket of ten year old generic car ownership, but it's a work hack only has to not break very often and be cheap to fix when it does. I'd love some shite but don't have the room/funds for 2nd tax and insurance/need for a car at all on the weekend so shite ownership is out of the window for now. I enjoy the craic on here and drooling over every one else's motors though, and try not to mention my boring cars too much, because they're just street furniture!

Now all cars have airbags can't we go back to having engine turned aluminium dashboards with 3" long bakelite rocker switches and 20" steering wheels with chrome spikes for horn pushes?

Don't get me wrong, modern cars are good at what they do.  I can get in mine every morning, and not worry that it won't start and it's conveyed me 30,000 miles in reliability and comfort and (fairly) good economy over the last 20 months.  Because it's rear wheel drive (and has a sport button that makes a tangible difference) it's even good to drive.

But...

It has absolutely no character, nothing that makes it interesting - more than any other car I've had!  I can go into a car park and find others almost every time.

Whereas the Mazda (the newest 'old' car I've owned) has a load of character, and even though there are still a load about it's interesting.  People want to talk about it (same as when I owned the Nova, Dolomite, 924 or the Midget and even the Alfa 156 I had)

The modern is fine but I'm just not interested in it coz there's little to be interested in.  Having said that there are interesting moderns I guess - I wouldn't turn down a go in some modern sports cars!

I think maybe I'm just re-stating the OP's point here tho...

^ Don't.

One of mine even uses the 'new' plate format.  Or would, were it not hidden - for added shiteness - under a Belfast reg that came with my first XM...

Posted

I see my XM as modern, then have to remember that 20 years old is not modern. It's like the Series VI Oxford my Aunt had when I was a child of the Eighties. My exposure to shite stared early.

All this 'I must have a car that starts every time' rubbish though. Come on! With minor ignition mods, my 2CV was always turn key dependable. You don't have to spend a fortune to get reliability. Nor comfort. Anything 1980s on will be fine in almost every way. Rust is the only realistic downside to old motors.

As for the original post, it's the Autoshite Tradition to occasionally have an 'all news cars are shit' thread is it not?

You need a Kia Shuma

I have a new car but I don't really talk about it much it as it's boring. It does the job though.

I've served my time running heaps as a daily driver and changing them every 3 weeks. Now u can just tinker with them at my leisure even though they're all broken.

If I could afford a new car, I'd buy thirty old cars.

That's just the way my mind works.

I'm sure new cars are lovely, I just can't see the value in them for the price.

Well if the lottery goes in my favour tonight I'll park the modern up and run the Colt as my daily see how it fares. Probably do just as well!

*crosses fingers for number 9 to come up!*

Id be the same I think.

Id buy old cars, but Id be able to do things like buy a £500 p38 or laguna 2 and not give a toss/fix it witout giving a toss, or a big engine £700 jag and be able to afford to run it!

Id probably join a supercar club though, mainly because I know fuck all about modern fast metal, and wouldnt want to spunk out on one and hate it, when I could just borrow one
