Skizzer's Discovery: sad and fiery news

It’s a bit happier than when you drove it, mainly for getting more regular use and not being damp. (I’m sure it wasn't anything personal, it’s normally a friendly old thing.) It’s still slower than it should be though; I still suspect lack of compression due to the leaky manifold. Should probably get around to fixing that.

In the meantime I just drive more slowly.

There is a dark cloud of sadness over the Skizzer household: friends, I must report the very sad demise of my beloved Discovery.

There is also a dark cloud (of smoke) over Tycoch, above where the left bank of cylinders seized and it caught fire. Have a smouldering melty pic:

Well, I’m assuming that’s what happened as someone else was driving at the time. That’s what it sounds like from what he said. A very helpful person who lived nearby helped put the flames out.

I’ve had it recovered to a place of rest, but I can’t imagine it’s going to be a remotely economic repair.

It died with its boots on, delivering a rowing machine. It was a wonderful thing and we all miss it already.

Sorry, I’ve just got something in my eye.

That's shit dude. I'd like to be able to say I hope you can get it fixed reasonably but as you've said, that's unlikely.

At least nobody is hurt.

Fire damage is always horrific, usually frightening.

If it served you well, died working, you can't really ask more.

Salvage what you can , and transplant it into a new one. Kinda cloning - the British way.

Sad times. How very, er, Land Rover. Is this why the original Rover badge was a Viking?

That sucks to see, could have be worse than it was. Hopefully once the crispness is removed it's salvageable but it's going to be a few quid.

Discos are a joyful pain to own. Shit but good rolled into one.

Sorry to see that Skiz, as others said though, at least nobody got hurt.

Are you going to look for a replacement?

Posted

Oh no, what a PITA.

Ideal excuse to transplant a TVR Griffith engine?

Excellent positive attitude, do you think that would work for the Glasgow School of Art as well?

Posted

Ah bollocks, that's awful news, Martin. I hope at some point you can salvage it somehow and bring it back to life.

Be careful. Molten plastics can generate hydroflouric acid which as absolutely not to be fucked with.

Well that's rather an embuggerance!

Sorry to see the old girl die :(

That's a shame Martin

Must admit it was one if only a few cars I'd consider buying back if the opportunity arose

Maybe time for that Chevy LS conversion?

Thanks to all for the sympathy and support, and indeed the excellent TVR idea.

There’s not a huge amount of damage as fires go, so in theory it should be repairable, but realistically with the queue of cars I already have requiring some fairly serious investment of time and money it’s probably not going to happen. I will look into it, but fear the worst.

As far as a replacement goes, by un unusually fortuitous coincidence I collected my new modern daily Skoda Kodiaq this morning, which will do pretty much all the things I used to use the Discovery for.

Blah blah fleet reduction blah sensible blah... will probably get a Disco 3 before long. I like Disco 3s and they’re getting cheaper because people (understandably) want Disco 4s instead.

Ah man. Genuinely, I’m gutted for you. It’s like losing a faithful old friend without being able to say goodbye.

There’ll be somebody who will masochistically put it back together, and that person will almost certainly be on here. That’s if you fancy it.

Good luck, and RIP in pieces little disco.

Oh jeepers. Be very careful about getting a Disco 3 and be prepared to remortgage the house to keep the thing going.

This.....go straight for a D4 and skip the self destructive engines, canbus wiring made of spaghetti and suspension bushes that are considered a "consumable" item....

Sad news Skizzer. Mine died because of rotten chassis, so I would give that a good look before considering fixing the fire damage.

Sounds like you've got your sensible head on though and are going to replace it.....with a disco 3.

That's only viton/ptfe, so really only high temp O rings and gaskets; it also requires temperatures well over 300C, the pics suggest not much of a fire at all, just some melted nylon and polythene moldings and fucked wiring. The not-to-be-fucked-with warning is right though.

The left bank has been on fire?

The right bank is therefore fine. What sort of eccentric needs more than four cylinders anyway?
