^ That. I've never seen one without the holder either. Looks like the bottom one has had everything not headlamp stripped off it, including the wiper motor which is usually a bastard to get off due to rotten chocolate torx bolts.

This thing is coming along slowly

Battery tray welded up:

Passenger footwell needed looking at:

hoik the interior out:

I see the problem here.

P1060935.jpg

Mig welder busted out

temporary-5.jpg

I chopped out one side of the outrigger, patched the chassis leg then stitched the chopped-out piece of outrigger back in

P1060938.jpg

P1060939.jpg

INterior back in

P1060942.jpg

Other side was quite a bit worse, ended up taking the outrigger right off and taking it to work to put in the blast cabinet

P1060957.jpg

Didn't take a lot of photos, as I was too 'on it'

getting ready to refit the outrigger

P1060955.jpg

Done, turned out really well this bit

Not bad eh?

I have put all the interior back in, but it'll have to come out again if i want to fix the droopy headlining (I do).

Not a lot else to report, I have fitted a new pressed ally front number plate (old font natch) and need to sort out a new RH headlamp and underseal the repairs properly then i think it should be ready for a test!!! Not ready for the road just yet though as i want to do the headlining and replace the cam belt before either selling it or putting it into service.

Looks a good job there.

My old saloon had gone in the same places, so I did exactly the same as what you've just done. Mine had gone on the opposite side to the battery aswell, under the air filter box.

I painted my battery tray area with many layers of thick stonechip paint then put a battery acid neutralising pad under the battery to stop it rotting again.

Some top class remedial work there. Is it just me or does the battery tray now resemble the face of a bear?

That's top work. I've never seen one go on the floor like that.

Loving the tangerine paint.

That shade of Orange is the Driftworks trademark shade. +💪for being anti scene in RWD.

More GREAT WORK Mr B...Like Philomena Cunk I'm quite taken by your 'tangerine paint'...take it it is red lead or somesuch. Paint info required please... :)

In time for the following weekend? ;-)

Yo! Been working on this today after it passed its MOT t'other day. first of all, I undersealed the welded bits:

P1070149.jpg

Classy job. While I was on I saw a 'swelling' on the chassis leg, so I had a pick at it:

P1070148.jpg

..... Le sigh. Ah well I've just passed the flippin test, I'll chuck some copper grease on it and have a look at it another day:

P1070150.jpg

Next i got stuck into a job I was not looking forward to.

P1070153.jpg

The headlining in this car is well droopy which was cheesing me off. AND, the sunroof doesnt work. I like a nice sunroof and it was clicking but not opening, so I figured both problems needed investigation. I read that you have to take out all 4 seats to extract the headlining, so thats what I started doing:

P1070151.jpg

Eventually I was able to persuade the headlining away from the ceiling, not the easiest and I damagfed the cardboard lining a bit getting it all undone:

P1070155.jpg

P1070156.jpg

At this point I was thinking 'fuck, thats knackered and I'll never get a new one, have i just destroyed the interior of this thing???'

Heres the top side of the headlining:

P1070157.jpg

The problem is, that this 30-yr old piece of cardboard has got absolutley ZERO residual strength left in it.

The fabric came off easily as most of the sponge had turned to dust:

P1070159.jpg

I wire brushed the foam stuff off, and lashed a bit of tape on to try and stop the whole thing busting to bits before i even got it home:

P1070163.jpg

Its flippin mega fragile.

P1070164.jpg

P1070158.jpg

I'm not sure what to do about it. I guess I have to do something cos its not like I am gonna get a new one anywhere. The best Idea I've had so far is to get some thin (like 3mm) plywood from a hobby craft shop, trim it to shape and staple/glue it to the back to reinforce it a bit. Its just round the sunroof and near the rear view mirror that its really flimsy. I've got some new sponge fabric ordered up, its just the question of making the backing board stiff enough to actually refit it back in the car without wrecking it.

Concerning the sunroof, the motor seems to be buggered:

P1070161.jpg

The sunroof opens and shuts oK manually, and the motor clicks, but it just doesnt do owt. I have opened up the motor and it seems to be seized, the armature is unable to turn the gears for some reason, although the gears turn manually with a screwdriver in the override thingy. Anyway I concluded that its knackered. Any SVM'ists have one of these in their spares pile? E-CASH WAITING

P1070166.jpg

Such a great car this, I love it. I even found a spare rear numberplate in the boot today, GR8 4 A-FRAMIN/TRAILERIN'

If anyone has any good ideas about the headlining, let me know!!!!

Glad you got down there to do some work!

If you find a headlining solution let me know as the one in my 760 is like a baggy 80yr old with 10 kids. Will likewise let you know if I sort it this weekend!

I'd have left the bugger in and hit it with the twist pins.

Too late for that now though. Soz.

Mr B it might be a stupid idea but a friend of mine recently bought "liquid plastic" somewhere online. She's making little bits and pieces for her jewellery business out of rubber moulds.

I wonder if you could use it to "paint" one side of cardboard with it as reinforcement.

Posted

Sounds interesting. I did wonder about getting some PVA glue and diluting it, then lashing loads on the back of the headliner, then just letting it dry out and seeing if it 'congealed' all the cardboard fibres back together.

Posted

You could ask one of eBay sellers if they know if it would stick to cardboard.

Posted

Why not leaving it out in the sun to get bone dry then painting it with Fiberglass resin (the stuff you get with separate matting) should soak in well and help keep it together.

Take it to a stationers and ask them to laminate it.

If it gets wet it might warp.

A massive bodge but would bicycle spokes work as reinforcement?  You could staple/ fibreglass them to the back or use something like this

au-12069-400.jpg

to hold them to the edge where it's bending.

The main worry would be rust stains coming through.

I read to you from YE BOKE OFF SHITE. Chapter one, The rules:

37: Always just pin Volvo headlinings up with drawing pins. Pins are your friend and will never abandon you.

56: Never open a sunroof on a car more than fifteen years old. If it doesn't leak, leave it alone.

Let these wurds of auld wisdom guide YE in thy life.

I would try glass fibre cloth and PVA glue. The PVA should stick to the cardboard stuff ok. I would use the glass cloth and glue both sides across the cracks to give strength. I have done bodges around the house with glass cloth and PVA like this and it is pretty strong.

I have a sunroof motor for an 850. I also have Volvo parts catalogues from 1975 to 2013 so I can find out if they are the same. Free to good home if it is.

Another vote for fibre glass resin here.

I think an 850 sunroof motor is different sadly, all the ones on eBay are different to mine
