Should it have yellow/white reflective numberplates with raised black letters/numbers?

I,am finding it abit tricky to find a supplier for these.

Also its registered in Feb 1976 when will it be tax exempt?will it be budget time 2017?

It has a glass sunroof which i want to loose,my friend has offered to weld the roof and i will have to sort the headling(do have a good spare)should i go this route,or maybe fit a webasto,or live with it and fit the period roofrack i found in my garage today, this being the easy route i know!

Yes, yes (I think) and yes (no Webasto). Is this six-cylinder's one?

Personally I would fit a Webasto because I love them and they were still period in 1976.

In fact a white MOD 2.5Pi saloon with a Webasto and Rostyle wheel trims remains on my dream garage list.

I could be wrong I often am but if it's registered feb '76 it may have been manufactured the previous year and therefore be tax exempt from 01/01/2016.

Here you get the letters:

Then you need the front and rear aluminium blanks, which are commonly available.

Much as I loathe Webasto roofs I'd say yes- welding in a panel and getting it to blend seamlessly into the roof has to be a tough job.

Be bold, go for the steel roof. Definately the most difficult and expensive choice. Pictures of the surgery please!

I would say yes to the Webasto - I think they are still making them. If you do go the welding route a vinyl roof would be an acceptable period item.

Colour of either will depend on the colour of the car and the colour of the interior. Dark colours absorb heat and will make the interior of the car hotter than light colours which can make a difference in summer.

id fit a full roof skin from a good donor. welding roof skins ends u warping them. roof skins are easy, find all the spot welds round the edge and just pop it off

Don't worry, just do it the best you can & then wap a vinyl roof on top.

Job, Jobbed.

Id fit a new roof skin, or a Webasto - rather than try to weld up the hole.

As I remember it, cars would come either with yellow/white reflective aluminium plates with the raised plastic characters attached to them, or modern style plastic plates with the same, earlier font. These were like modern plastic registration plates, but the yellow was a slightly darker colour.

I remember that these more modern plates were more expensive and would nearly always be fitted on more expensive cars such as Jaguars etc. Your Triumph may well have had them.

I remember my dad paying extra for  the dealer to fit a set on a car in '76. I seem to think they were described as 'Wipe clean' or 'Easy clean' registration plates. They were quite a bit more IIRC.

Surely the Autoshite way is to rivet a bit of tin over the sunroof hole, and then slap a shonky vinyl roof over the top?

no the autoshite way would be just put vinyl OVER the hole

Webastos are pricey, when I looked at replacing the cover for the one on the Lancia it was a few hundred quid. It would probably be cheaper to weld over the hole TBH.

A webasto syle sunroof is very appealing, but the thought of cutting the roof isn,t!

Is it possible to fit one at home or is it def a no no job,ive already bought the metal to have the hole welded up and have a spare headling, but a webasto roof does suit a Triumph.

They seem expensive though even S/H and i guess its not a quick job to fit, anyone fitted one?.

It can be done at home, but obviously it requires some bravery. IIRC, one of the (now former) PC chaps fitted one to his Vanden Plas Princess about ten years ago. I still remember thinking "rather him than me!" I don't imagine trying to weld a piece of metal into a hole is a particularly easy job either though. The roof isn't flat, so how do you match the curve? And then how do you avoid distorting the thin roof panel when welding?

I seem to recall the raised numbers on a plate dying out around 1973, and being pretty much replaced with modern type plates.

I believe you will distort the roof welding in a panel, you need a skilled metal worker who can then heat and shrink the metal back into place so only a light skim of filler will be needed.

Not around here, most of the many late 70s cars I had came with raised letter plates.
