1989 Ford Escort Mk4 1.4L - NOW SOLD AND COLLECTED!

We bought this in January to replace the Fiat 126. It's now surplus to requirements so needs to go.

There's a bit of rust, a couple of small dents etc but for a Mk4 Escort it's actually pretty good.

The MOT expires on 24/10 so if you're quick there's enough to drive home without pre-booking an MOT. Currently taxed too, but obviously this is not transferrable.

It's a pretty good daily, practical, comfortable, OK on motorways etc.

The catch is that it'll need a bit of electrical work for an MOT, but I imagine this'll be a piece of piss if you've done anything electrical before. The indicators are not working, the headlight switch (on the same stalk) is broken so they're on dipped beam all the time and the horn (steering wheel centre) isn't working either.

The guy we bought it from got it in a house clearance or something and it came with no keys or paperwork. We have the V5 and some bills from the last few years, and it passed last year's MOT with no advisories. The key we have is fine in the doors and ignition but won't work the boot lock. It can be locked/unlocked from inside though. There's about 60k on the clock but we can't verify this. I'm confident it's genuine though.

Slight water leak into the boot, probably a light seal.

CD player, sunroof, 5 speed gearbox. Front plate recently replaced with a good reproduction one from DMB.

Comes with new front springs and shocks, the old ones still seem OK though so we didn't bother replacing them.

Timing belt hasn't been done as far as we know so assume it's well overdue.

Wow man, seriously, wow!

Want, very much early 90s granny_mobile. However, I have so something else on the horizon...

I would litterally buy this for my other half. If it wasnt in France. And if I had any money. Looks like an amazing bargain.

Have I missed something, when did escorts like this with dodgy electrics and short MOT become desirable?

Sorry for the unhelpful post Gary.

I'm sure I had a Ghia version of this many moons back that had FIAT levels of wiring spazziness and we traced it to a duff earth.

Chris: they have been creeping up in value bit-by-bit in recent years, and I reckon with minimal work and a full MOT there's still a half decent profit in it, if that's what anybody wanted it for.

Blimey! This is a long way from home - the reg and the Peoples Ford number plates and boot badge suggest it was sold new from Peoples at 241 Glasgow Road, Rutherglen. Looks a solid car for the dough.

Out of interest what luxuries did the L get over the Pop Plus spec?

Think the issue is to do with the actual stalk/switches as it happened when it was broken into. The steering column surround thing has been replaced, ignition fixed and broken window (rear door quarter light) replaced. The original front plate was broken in the same incident.

No insurance claim was made so there's no marker or anything to declare for insurance purposes.

Pre-booked MOT and drive it back. You think that's far? Tomorrow I'm travelling a full 14 (fourteen!) miles to fetch a car.

Back in the Day, I owned a mk3 1.6 GL (w reg) from 1989 to 91 and then a D reg mk3 series 2 MFi XR3i (from 1998 to 2000) .

I call it a series 2 as that was what we called them, as the mk4 was introduced in 1992.  Sometime between 2000 and 2014 the mk4 became the mk5 and the mk3 series 2 became to mk4.  This is like George Orwell's 1984, and the rewriting of history.

It is ONLY this reason that I can not buy this car. Had you advertised it as a mk3, series 2, I'd have bought it. But no.

PS free bump.

You kind of have to go with the masses. Google image search for mk4 Escort and see what you get.

The only time I've heard Series 2 is in relation to RS Turbos

Posted

These were always called MK4, at least they were in Max Power and Fast Car in the nineties, though the XR3is and RSTs were referred to as 'series 2'.

Posted

Series 1 and 2 only gets used when talking about the RS turbo.

It's the "debate' over mk5/5a or mk6 that really gets the forums buzzing!

Posted

Anyone want this Mk2 Series 2a Escort for £240 before I resort to Ebay?

Posted

If it was an F-reg Mk2 Fiesta in the same colour and L spec I'd have been all over it for sentimental reasons.

Alas it isn't, but it's still a bargain - would.
