Update because Misery Of Transport testicle results are in.

Brakes, pipes and a bearing.

I'm pleased with that.

Calipers are apart, sliders are out. Hopefully a file and grease will see the binding off.

New pads, disks and pipeage will be thrown into the pot tommorow. Add one rear bearing, simmer for three minutes then serve flat side down on the nearest road.

After that, the next step will be OMGCAMBELT and water pump. And a full fluids transfusion.

It was a good day.

That's not a bad result to be fair! :) Good luck with the retest!

Well good, piece of piss that lot, look forward to seeing more pics.

What are they filing, the sliders? Why, corrosion?

The slider reciever holes (dunno the right term) they looked raggy.

Well the questionable filing seems to have worked!

5w40 sounds a bit thin for old engines IMO but I'm no ex spurt.

Is it a 'engine' knock or could it be something worked loose after your surgery; retrace your steps and check everything. A loose crank pulley for example can sound like the engine is about to eat itself and shit the remains out of the filler cap.

Sounds like an engine knock to me. Though I'm no real expert. I didnt do the work. It was a tame local garage.

5w40 was recomended by halfords/europarts. Spose it serves me right for trusting them.

Heres a vid in the dark:

http://s439.photobucket.com/user/volvosneverdie/media/IMG_1440.mp4.html

Knocking noise is most audible @ about 13 seconds in, and seems to begin in real life about ten mins after cold start up.

Posted

Does sound like a knock, perhaps it's from the camshaft/ top end?  How long does the oil light take to go out?  Get it into fifth at 40mph ish and find a convenient hill.  Let it labour a little at half throttle.  If it knocks then, it's probably from the bottom end.

The TU engine is a solid little lump, terminal damage from skipped oil changes is not that common..

Looks great regardless.  I agree, the stock steelies for the XS will set it off a treat :)

Posted

Never listen to Halfords for advice! Personally I'd say 5w40 was piss thin hence the noise, I'd bung something like 15w40 in it.

The only oil light it had is the "You have run out of oil and your engine has exploded" idiot light.

Everything else goes off as it should.

I'll give that check a go though man. Thanks for the input.

This will happen tomorrow Trig. "Put it back the way it was!"

To be fair Comma do list 5w40 for it which would be what they went by, it's too thin for something like that.

I agree with everything said about the 5w40 not being right.  It's a fully synthetic oil, surely too thin for an 80s engine.  Incidentally, I ran your reg. through the Castrol oil selector WIZARDRY and it recommends 10w40... which is exactly what I'd go for.  Lots cheaper too!

Posted

My old one of these loved* wilkos 10/40. It ran a treat on it after the head gasket surgery.

Sadly it wasn't an xs though one of these features highly in my late night ebay searchings.

Posted

10.40 3 places list as that  - only halfords list it as 5.40 - old mans 5 series eats that why put it in a 10 year older shopping car (no offence)

halfords r shit etc

New cam belt, water pump, aux belt, oil, filter and coolant added yesterday.

And today it started knocking.

FUCK.

the oil that came out was very thick and manky.

Replaced it with nice new 5w40.

Can an oil change really kill an engine?

I think I need a grown up.

Great write up.

As an aside, I'd like to see the film 'Twins' remade starring Hairnet and TooSavvy.

I'd like to the film 'Twin Town' remade starring Hairnet and Toosavvy. They wouldn't need drugs!

Another vote of 10w40, which is exactly what we run Mrs_Jon's 1.9 GTi and my Visa GTi on. If it's good enough for them, I'm sure it'll be fine for your 1.4. I can't remember what I used in my AX GT a few years ago but it defo wasn't 5w40.

On a separate note, I've got so used to seeing our 205 in such a poor state paint-wise, that yours looks like a Pebble Beach contender. I really don't think you can beat these cars for cheap thrills and everyday usefulness. Here's our sunburnt effort holed up next to a rebuilt, modified and subsequently crashed 1985 GTi, an ex-UK car which is donating plenty of spares.

Well, Overrun popped up with a decent jack and some enthusiasm.

Hoping that thicker oil will help.

Higher!:

Thatll do.

The oil capacity is 5 litres. We could only get about 2.5 litres out through the drain plug though. Hmmmmmm.

Refilled with thicker oil (2.5 litres).

Give it a run and hope for the best..................

No difference.

Guessing there 2.5 litres of sludge in the engine then. And the engine is not very happy about it.

Anyone fancy a knocking XS thats just had £350 spent on it?

New cam belt, tensioner, water pump, aux belt, oil (twice), oil filter, leads, plugs, cap, rotor arm, disks, pads, front brake lines, rear wheel bearings, coolant.................

Full MOT, 6 Months tax?

No?

Guessed not.

Fuck.

5/40 should have been OK in that engine, it's the same basic block as on stuff upto the 2002 Saxos etc.

I might know a guy for it as it is if you're done with it, I'll get in touch with him. Whereabouts north east are you?

Posted

Im sure I read somewhere that fully synthetic doesn't mix well with normal oil,

I like the way you stuff 5/40 in it then everyone tells you that it should be 10/40 or 15/40 so you being a proper man stick 20/50 in it :-D

Well if its gonna knock on 20/50, you take away all doubt over oil thickness. It indicates absolutely a greater problem.

To me anyway. Who is admittedly an idiot.

^^^whs. did the Diesel engine flush thing on an old merc that had noisy lifters and was generally sludged up. I was shocked to see the crap that came out, I cleaned the sump out too, or rather CHISELED it out. After that it really sounded and ran sweet as a nut. It may not sort it, but it's worth a try at least.

Posted

I did a flush and oil change back in the day on a sweet sounding Omega.

That knocked like a dumper truck with a broken camshaft after.

It had just never been looked after and the flush and new oil fucked it.

Feel ya pain.

Sent from my Nokia 3310 using the force.

Posted

Sure'y if it's got a big end knock then that's it, you can;t really do anything about it. Thicker oil may disguise it for a while but you'l need a new engine sooner or later. Good used lump time!

Posted

Oww shitsticks.

I've used the diesel flush on 4 bang dirt bikes that have sucked in a load of sludge and it's worked a treat. As for getting rid of a knock, ear muffs/loud stereo will work for a short spell.
