Treble 19, bullseye DOUBLE BLOODY TOP

My lad changed his mind again about what car he wanted. very nearly talked him into a 205, Capri, 156 or MX5, but last night he'd made his mind up.

Found a car 6 miles away that looked absolutely bob on, but sadly it was suffering from some weird problems which my lad thought was HG related, so we sacked that off.

Some patient trawling of Autotrader and eBay came up trumps though, so off to Coventry we went for this:

(Sorry, picture is bound to be rubbish)

I have to say for a 1.6 (manual, not silly speed) it doesn't half go some. Leaving in top at motorway speeds then accelerating to more motorway speeds was effortless, and once off the M6 it was an absolute riot wellying it through the gears. I quickly discovered the rev limiter and how to piss off Mercedes Benz drivers, so God alone knows what the 2.0 ones are like.

That's nice, Cav. Junior has taste. Timing tools here if he needs them.

My Uncle Robert has one of these in the same colour and hasn't had any trouble with it. Swapped his MG ZR for it.

We don't need help at the moment!

A better picture, taken by the seller. Insurance is £2,500 apparently, but as it's only a couple of hundred quid more than his current car, my lad is quite happy.

That looks gr9 Billy. Hasn't Wuvvum got one of those?

I was going to mention insurance, but if it's not much more than he's currently paying then that's not too bad.

I've found with Italian motors you need to to keep on top of maintenance, ie. fix things asap before they turn in to something nasty/expensive.

They're nice cars. Right colour too. Has it got the leather and all that?

I had to get the train down here (to Coventry) last week, I could've picked it up for you. Unfortunately, you weren't to know any of these facts, and picking a new car up is quite good anyway.

Stiff gearchange can be cured by undoing the pivot bolt on top of the gearbox removing the nylon spacers and slopping copper grease over the lot then re-assembling.Oh, and the specialist variator removal tool can be made using a length of  1 inch angle iron a 20mm holesaw and a 6mm drill bit.

I was never that taken by these when they were new, but given what followed, they now stand out as a lovely bit of design. I love some of the details - like the Alfa Romeo embossed wiper arms. My mate has had one for quite a few years now and has failed to replace it as it's so good.

No leather sadly and the (15") wheels aren't as snazzy as some we'd looked at, but still really happy with it.

You can pick up complete leather interiors for a couple of hundred quid id he could be bothered to change it.

Posted

Oh Billy, couldn't you convince him to buy a nice MGF?

Posted

Is your lad planning on keeping this one long term or might it be up for grabs soon?

(Mid life crisis + never owned an Alfa yet = 8)  ??)

Posted

He wants to keep it for a year at least I think.

Glenn: good thinking, and there's an Alfa breakers the other side of town, might drop down and visit them too & see if they have any leather interiors.

At his age I'd have had more fun with the chemists van. Double mattress squeezed in the back would have been great, cheaper insurance as well. Each to their own.
