As an owner of three classic Minis, I can honestly say I'm ashamed to see the same name on the modern equivalents- particularly the estate/ 4x4 monstrosities.

Original Mini was simple, understated and elegant.

It was also an an uncomfortable, noisy rot box that needed constant maintenance. The 2001 Mini is a better car in every way. I had plenty of Minis from passing my test in 1984 until my last one 20 odd years ago. Whilst I would make room for a nice mark 1 Mini, I know full well that as a regular mode of transport they are absolute shite. The fact that some mongs will pay £3000 for a 'classic' Mini rather than £800 for a perfectly decent Corsa remains a mystery to me.

Peugeots seem to get worse with every new model. The 407 is without a doubt an inferior car to the 406, and the E39 5 Series wasd a far nicer car than the E60 that replaced it. Very often manufacturers force feed us with shit we didn't ask for. DMF's, electronic handbrakes, electric power steering and crap like that. All it does is make the car more expensive to build, so costs are cut elsewhere and you end up with a car that had the build quality of a Bic biro and a similar lifespan.

Reliable, good-looking, simple, cheap to run, etc. etc. etc.

A guppy-faced, poorly made, overly complicated pile of shite with appalling reliability, shoddy electrics and riddled with DMF & DPF problems. (What's it tell you when the image google produced 3rd for "Peugeot 307" was from this website: http://avontuning.co.uk/2013/01/peugeot-dpf-removal-delete/)

Oops, they did it again.

I know someone who has a 407 same age as my car (eight years old) and he's just paid £1000 to get it through the MOT, leaking power steering, knackered ball joints and wheel bearings,were my Fabia just flew through. Glad someone else has noticed how rubbish build quality on new cars has become.

Nah, no way is that worse than the previous model. Both are simply beautiful places to break down, as indeed I have. Checking out the stitching whist waiting for the AA man is just a sublime way to pass the time.

On the other hand this thread should be reserved for truly awful replacement shite, like the VAG Golf, worse with every generation. I seem to recall that VW replaced the Golf 4 with the 5 'because the 4 was too expensive to make', well let me rush out and buy one then.....

The 159 is better looking than the 156 and they're also nicer inside. They both look nice but the 159 is more modern like the DB7 going to the DB9.

Basing this purely on looks alone - but how this thing of beauty

will never cease to amaze me.

I was asking myself if the back of that Bristol Senator is supposed to look like that and had to conclude that it is. I like Bristols as much as the next mentalist, but I'd be loathe to spend money on fit and finish like that outside of the BL family.

These splendid Rover 200s:

The "Mk4 Allegro" Rover 200 fulfilled its design brief, which was to kill Rover.

No. These...

Rover 800 etc killed Rover.

The ZT-T V8 would have saved it, if they'd made loads more and charged half price for 'em

Anyway, as you all were "It's worth more than £500, therefore it's shit" etc.

The Alfa 159 is one of the sexiest looking cars you can buy, no way in this world was the 156 better looking.

Bollox.* :wink:

The front of it looks orgasmic but the rest of it is dulls-ville, Arizona. The 156 abounds with beautiful details, the haunches over the wings, the totally smooth sides, the door handles, even the rear lights on a 156 look nicer...

It was one of the very few cars of recent years that didn't look like it was about to eat your children, yet still managed to look like it was a proper sports saloon.

Yes, yes, the XJS and TR7 have grown like mould to have an ironic charm of their own, and I would happily own either now, but man what a shock to a young lad growing up in the 70s.

The 406 to 407 atrocity has been mentioned already, but nothing illustrates it better than the coupes;

In fact every recent Peugeot is grade A ugly compared to it's forebears. I mean WTF was the designer thinking when he stepped back from his drawing board, hands on hips, nodding smugly thinking "yep, that's sorted";

I would suggest the rot set in much earlier with these Tupperware-laden horrors.

Horrible. They even had the radio mounted where the passenger could reach it, who wants that?

Admittedly a bit of a stretch :lol:

DSCN2591_zpsa1c3a891.jpg

It was the earlier RRC's that had the radio tucked away and out of sight :idea:

on the whole though the later classics were more powerful, more comfortable, had aircon and abs and are generally quite civilised places to be.

They also rot just as badly as the earlier cars and have basically the same dash. :?

The last of the classics apparently rot worse?!? My first one did and the current one doesn't, go figure.

the p38 on the other hand is a worthy contribution to this thread. There seem to be some bargains, but only very patient people should apply. I reckon the p38 is responsible for holding prices up on the L322 sucessor and now inflating prices for good RR Classics.
