Mr_Bo11ox Posted March 5, 2013 Posted March 5, 2013 Saw one of these coming towards me i the traffic this morning. http://www2.mercedes-benz.co.uk/content ... ility.html A fucking Renault Kangoo with a Mercedes front on it!!! The mind boggles I hope these are cheaper than the Renault equivalent - I would expect to pay less to offset the feeling of being insulted when the Merc dealer suggests buying one. Surely this beats any of GM's efforts with their swedish subsidiary for sheer half-arsedness. I bet at M-B you get assigned to this project as a sort of disciplinary measure.
Junkman Posted March 5, 2013 Posted March 5, 2013 The way things are going you can be glad that there isn't a Rolls-Royce grille grafted to it, no ye olde walnute veneere inside and no 124k price sticker.
catsinthewelder Posted March 5, 2013 Posted March 5, 2013 To be fair there was a great big advertising hoarding for those in town last month and I didn't notice it's french roots. Mercedes at least makes some effort to differentiate thier vans from others using the same shell*. I didn't notice that the mk1 Sprinter was a rustier VW LT with a prettier nose till they were both replaced with the newer shell that had a few almost distinctive styling flourishes. *Yes I know about the Dodge Sprinter thing but that isn't sold here
Burnside Posted March 5, 2013 Posted March 5, 2013 Went passed the Mercedes Van dealer in Brum today and saw some of these Citans plus the billboard adds around the Midlands with Macgyver but I won't be conviced it's just nothing more than a rebadged overpriced Kangoo Van. Mind you least it should hopefully rust less than a Vito can. What about the new Vauxhall Combo van thats really a Fiat Doblo too that a poor effort. An people slagged the Alfa Arna off?
hairnet Posted March 6, 2013 Posted March 6, 2013 http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Mercedes-Benz ... 337ffe7465 21k for that the kangoo as far as i can gather 16k ish similar spec will people do the bentley grille on 300c thing only put the merc grill on the kangoo and keep the renault badges
Conrad D. Conelrad Posted March 6, 2013 Posted March 6, 2013 There was an article in the paper today basically saying that they're going to start recruiting foreign management to shed their 'too German' image. So commenced Operation People Seem To Like Renaults, Let's Do That Instead.
gtd2000 Posted March 6, 2013 Posted March 6, 2013 I didn't notice that the mk1 Sprinter was a rustier VW LT with a prettier nose till they were both replaced with the newer shell that had a few almost distinctive styling flourishes. Neither did I until I googled it - I was thinking of this type...
eddyramrod Posted March 6, 2013 Posted March 6, 2013 I didn't notice that the mk1 Sprinter was a rustier VW LT Having handled both on delivery rounds I can tell you; the VW is by far the better van of the two. For me to say something like that about a Volkswagen, you know it's a reference!
dollywobbler Posted March 6, 2013 Posted March 6, 2013 I didn't notice that the mk1 Sprinter was a rustier VW LT Having handled both on delivery rounds I can tell you; the VW is by far the better van of the two. For me to say something like that about a Volkswagen, you know it's a reference! I wouldn't necessarily agree with that. I regularly drive both (albeit the Sprinter is a facelifted Mk1) and if anything, I slightly prefer the Merc. They're darned near identical bar the engines. The Sprinter I drive actually has a four-cylinder engine, but it pulls very nicely and is more refined than the clattering five-pot in the LT.
Micrashed Posted March 6, 2013 Posted March 6, 2013 Cheap... Cheapish... & How the fuck do they sleep at night? Spot the difference?
Mr Lobster Posted March 6, 2013 Posted March 6, 2013 That Logan van is giving me the horn, I reckon I could have a deep and meaningful relationship with one of them. As far as Sprinters vs LTs go, i've never driven a newish LT but I absolutely loved our Y plate Sprinter (313 MWB). Really do wish I hadn't sold it, probably one of my biggest motoring mistakes. Never found it uncomfortable and it was pretty damn good to drive as far as I was concerned.
Pete-M Posted March 6, 2013 Posted March 6, 2013 Many moons ago I was working as a sales droid at a VW main agent. Van sales collared me and asked me too help them collect three new LTs from the docks about five miles away. All three LTs threw their Cambelts on the way back..Brand new.
Mr_Bo11ox Posted March 6, 2013 Author Posted March 6, 2013 Its like going into a half-decent restaurant and being offered what is obviously a Big Mac (still wrapped in the Mcdonalds greaseproof paper) for £12. ‘How stupid do you think I am? Big Macs are alright, but when I want one I’ll just get one from McDonalds for £4!!!’

What counts is that the core values of Piazzios Bar&Grill are maintained.
Spiny Norman Posted March 6, 2013 Posted March 6, 2013 If people are mug enough to pay £20k for an Audi A3 instead of the pretty much identical Golf they can get for £15k, why shouldn't they be allowed to do the same for a van? No doubt the real reason is so Merc van dealers have something to offer fleet customers looking for something smaller than a Vito. I wouldn't be at all surprised if Mercedes commercial vehicles make more profit for them than the passenger cars division, and the absence of a smaller van might have been hurting sales to some fleets who want a 'one stop shop' transport solution like Renault can offer, with everything from a small car-derived van to a 44 tonne tractor unit.
HillmanImp Posted March 6, 2013 Posted March 6, 2013 Hold on though. In 2012, Mercedes-Benz began a marketing campaign for the Citan with Richard Dean Anderson reprising his role as the popular TV show character MacGyver. The series of short films, titled MacGyver and the New Citan, is available on the official Citan website, from September 18 onwards.[10][11] The episodes were shot in Johannesburg, South Africa, in July 2012. That sounds like reason enough to buy one of these. Still not as good as a Land Rover with Brian Blessed in it and 2 rocket lanchers strapped to the back though. I am at work and the miserable bastards have blocked youtube in the hope that I would do some sort of work so can't get the vids.
chaseracer Posted March 6, 2013 Posted March 6, 2013 SHITAN. That is all.Quite so, Rev. They didn't think this one through, did they...?
