I'm having a really bad day so I'd happily donate a tenner for some poor soul to take this and then spend the next 2 years getting depressed every time they look out of their window at this hopeless wreck cluttering up their drive.

 

No matter how bad things got for me, at least I could console myself that someone else is having a worse time by simply being the custodian of the worlds most fucked Rover.

I'd love that Cav. Rolling around on nice comfortable 13" tyres, basking in the grim base spec interior while the headlining falls on you over bumps.

Then you remember you're only paying £140 a year to tax it (becoz 1389cc) and realise you are winning at life!

(or just buy a better one on eBay for less than it'll cost to recommission this one)

I’d like to buy the Cav, get it roadworthy and show it at FOTU in 2020. Sadly dreams and reality are two very different stories.

It's popped up in the news, which either means there'll be a decision on the planning application soon, or scrotes will realise there's cars to be stolen. It seems the owner keeps applying for permission, but then not doing anything and letting it lapse. It's also reported to be a working office, workshop and retail site!

Interesting to learn from the DT article that the dealership was used as a shooting location for a film back in 2017.

There are no hidden value issues as far as the garage owner is concerned. They're now worth feck all, and that's all he wants for them. I still think it's a shame that no-one wants to help save one of them, but hey, that's the way it is. 

I still reckon some of the 'they've been scrapped? Shit, I wish I'd known as I'd have done something about that...' crew will appear when they've finally been crushed.

I went past by chance just over a week ago and the Rover was still there then. The Cav and Maestro where there but the toe rags had left the doors open on the Maestro.

Still happy to put some money towards saving the remaining 2 vehicles too if someone up for the challenge?

I'd love the Maestro, but quite simply do not have anywhere to put it.  I've already got one car parked on the lawn because I'm out of driveway space.

I'm not a million miles away though so am more than happy to lend a pair of hands, tools etc if I can help.

Spotted this elsewhere on tinternet today. Photo was taken yesterday. Looks like all three motors are still there, although break ins are more frequent apparently. I thought the Rover was supposed to have gone for spares?

Did the earlier 800s have the overly anal immobilisers like mine does? I seem to remember reading that the 800 had electrical issues when it was parked up, hence "sold as seen"? Wonder what the issue was.

I think the ‘sold as seen’ sign is more likely to be due to the fact it hasn’t got any wheels

Going back years when the garage bought the 800, they weren’t seen as a desirable car by the trade, those and the Renault 25 etc. One with problems was probably close to impossible to sell. 

The Pinto will be too heavy for someone to lift. I don’t know about you but I couldn’t pick an engine up and run away with it.

Not wrong, they are a bloody boat anchor and unless its a 2.0 it’s pretty much worthless (says a man with four 1.8s in a shed). They are heavy lift for two people. I have once seen one lifted by a single person but he was a fucking gorilla and he certainly wasn’t running.

The Rover V8 is a cracking engine, when they stuck then in the MGBs it made pretty much no difference weight wise when compared to the B series lump. The pinto is from the same era of massive cast iron block and head, the balance shaft and associated gubbins also adds a couple of pounds for good measure.

A good 2.0 Pinto with the right block is worth a bit but the worlds moved on. If you were looking to fit  a ‘better’ engine in a Mk1 Escort you’d drop a 2.0 Zetec in. Much more durable.

Yup, £200 - £300 for one you can see running seems the going rate around here on a 2 litre when they come up, 1.6s and 1.8s seem to come on around £50 then drop until people give up and give them away which is how I ended up with 4 x 1.8s. I have a soft spot for the old pinto and the 2.0 is a straight swap for the 1.6 so a dead easy, albeit very small, power gain. I have a 2.0 ready for my Capri but as the 1.6 is running sweet as a nut I am not sure if I will bother.

I tried lifting my Pinto for the Capri and fucked my back! The plan was to lift it a bit at a time, almost hopping it down the drive from my van but I couldn’t even manage that! In the end I rolled/slid it onto a sheet of metal and two of us dragged it down the drive on that. Still hard work!

Theyre fucking heavy bastards that’s for sure. I was looking at mine the other day now it’s in the car and wondering how the fuck it’s even got the ability to make itself move!

You should feel the weight of the big block V8 in my Yank. That’s all iron and it’s absolutely massive too.

I fucked my back lifting an Opel Cam in Head engine over the door shut in the conservatory to the back garden. Two of us lifted that too and I still ended up in hospital. Never doing that again.
