Volvo 740 with premium beatnik grandeur - T&T, £150

I've been mercilessly thrashing this luxury home for six weeks, but have now grown tired of it.

Temptation exists to drive it to a scrapyard for profit. But first... does anyone fancy it?

It's not very good, but it is very cheap.

Will swap for other cars or items.

Statistics:

- MoT until mid-October.

- Taxed until the end of July.

- Neighbour-wowing Jewish Racing Gold paintwork.

- 'Sports' tailgate.

- Automatic gearbox technology.

- 140,000ish miles.

- Previously owned by Scooters, like all good Volvos.

- Soon to feature in the Spring issue of Practical Classics magazine.

- Front wing streamlined using accident damage.

- Roof-lining removed for extra fuel economy.

- Working CD player with free original copy of 'Doolittle' by the Pixies.

- Slippery, spanky black leather interior.

- Folding seat camper conversion function.

- Constant loss windscreen washer system.

- Capable of cruising at 100mph while delivering literally miles per gallon.

- Slightly sticky LH front caliper, resulting in warm fog-horn sound on every 50th pedal press.

- Tires have plenty of tread, but lack pedigree.

- Front left tyre may smell of dog urine.

- New control-arm bush at cost of over £8.50.

- Mildly rattly front steering/suspension parts - a tired balljoint or two, perhaps?

- Otherwise mechanically adequate.

- 1/3 of a tank of petrol.

- Would suit fly-tipper, sheep rustler or dogger.

Drive it home from Chippenham, Wiltshire.

PM or give me a ring on 07748 593408.

Sam, that is a true shitters car and at that price is a gift IMO, in fact any new owner can't lose! 8)

I thought Scooters only just bought this?, It doesn't seem like a few weeks ago we was taking about the smashed rear window?

Here we go. viewtopic.php?f=1&t=12759&start=30, It look cheap enough, use it as a van for a few months and then just frag it, Bargain!

KWALITY ad, and a great shite buy for someone.

Good chuckle too. :D

Posted

That looks great and it is barely run in. I used to sell mine at about 250,000 miles just in case they needed the cam belt doing. It really needs to go to someone with snotty posh neighbours for best usage. People round here all drive cars like that so wouldn't give a toss. Ace bit of copywriting by the way.

That's more oarsome than a lakeful of rowing boats.

Big shabby Volvos are splendid.

Posted

That is fucking well spot on. You truly are living the dream.

Posted

That's perfect! Exactly how I would expect a 25-year-old Volvo to look, and a brilliant ad too. Literally loads of life left in that old girl for someone. Total bagrain. :D

Posted

Loved the ad - a very honest appraisal.

Nice if somebody on here ended up with it, better than being cubed and sent to china.

Unfortunately, I don't think I would advertise it to the general public - even at that money, they would find fault and start moaning.

Sold my other half's car on flea bay for £360 a few weeks back, due to the lack of use the exhaust had developed a slight blow.

The buyer turned up, heard the exhaust and said "My £360 car is now a £460 car". I made it clear he did'nt have to have it, and that I would'nt budge on the price. He took the car.

However, it is the last time I sell a car privately.

I'd love this. Had to re-register as I couldnt for the life of me remember my previous username.

Perfect shite to keep me on the road as I'm selling the fleet and starting from scratch again. (I'm from retrorides, I recognise plenty of names).

I have to roll out the old excuse - if only I was closer! It would cost me as much to get it back. :(

Posted

That's bloody brilliant! I can't help thinking the bootlid would benefit from a randomly selected tin of beige paint and a roller, for the ultimate look.

I know a guy in Cardiff looking a shitter as he can't afford to re-tax the Vel Satis - will mention it to him but at that price it'll likely be long gone before anything happens....

Opposite edge of the country, I know I've done the approx 200 mile round trip to Bristol a few times. The travelling costs put me out of the picture really, unless I could sell my Merc for the £750 I want. Mind you, if I did that, I'd buy the Pontiac Firebird that is on carandclassic.co.uk at present.

I have sent a message about having this. Also suggested that he may want to px it against the Daf if that is an option. However i am more than happy to get a ten pound bus down to pick it up and smoke around in it for a bit. My neighbours will love it.

With only the slightest attempt at care, this could easily become the new Autoshite bike! :D

Posted

Wow man! I'm in awe, I really am. I love this car. You really are living the true life of a shiter - Cap duley doffed.

I really do hope it goes to someone who can scare the shit out of the public and generally run a riot in this.

Thats the most perfect* old Volvo I've seen in ages! Anyone got £150 I could borrow?

Posted

I wouldn't mind that, not only because it appears far too good to scrap, but also because if I parked The Volvo next to it, The Volvo would look like a concours contender in comparison

I have bought this. £10 coach ticket, £15 to transfer insurance, £800 in fuel back up to Leeds. Its all win as far as I can see.

Excellent! It was far, far too cheap to even have to think about not buying, reckon you've had a right bargain with that.

Nice one. Sounds better than my last 740, which also cost me £150. These can actually be quite economical. 30mpg shouldn't be an issue and 70mph equals about 2300rpm. Comfy.

Posted

Excellent! You'll have somewhere to sleep at Betaboy's party now! :D Looking forward to sampling that leather at Coniston...

Lol....

I bought it before Christmas to be my long range winter hack. As was by mid January is still not made it down south to collect it. I was having a phone blether with Sam who told me that his MGB winter driving was proving miserable ...cold, wet and scary on those Lincs roads with all those mad hgvs checking up slush...I offered a Volvo based solution.....I think this must be the fourth or doth Volvo I've sent Sams way...anyway....you know the rest!

Original Doolittle CD? Brilliant album that...last time I listened to it whilst driving I ended up backwards in a hedge in a renner 5 halfway through 'Debaser'....must have been in 1995 and was a cassette is made from the vinyl as Black Frank repeats the second line three times....

Hey hey Mr Imp - May I be the first to put MEGA dibsies on this if/when you want to part? It's truly made for our band to drive between gigs in, and pretty much in my ideal car condition too.

Keep me informed!!

Chris
