Shite in Miniature II

I was in Linlithgow again today so I visited that little Antiques Shop again.

As soon as I arrived the proprieter said "ah hello again" and shoved this into my hand. He had just got a job lot of boxed Wiking Mercedes and this rogue Brekina Hanomag was in amongst it. He didn't want anything for it at all.

We chatted about Rover 75s for a good while after that.

I'll be back!

Well I've properly addressed the issues of the Alpine, with wrong wipers etc, now it also sports Geordieland plates, and I snapped it with it's bastard child commie cousin

And the new signage on the diorama to reflect my fleet

 Is the green one a Aleko? Love it.

One of the killers with diecast IMHO is the postage, with all but some unboxed 1/87 stuff (and a few Lesneys) often costing £2.95 at least to post. So, I'm trying to look for more local stuff that can be picked up in person. Spotted these near my folks house, so Egg senior collected this morning....for my renovation pile.

Can someone please advise or direct me to a relevant website, I've numerous model cars that could do with a refurbishment. A lot of the models I have just require painting, do I take off the base plate, do I spray paint them, hand paint, as you can tell I'm a novice with this so all advice greatly appreciated.

Thank you..

It's all about preference.  I've been hand-painting for at least 50 years, but this year (neatly coinciding with being ill) I've started spraying.  This does require the baseplate to be removed, along with windows, interior, whatever else there is.  If you've got a good eye and a steady hand (which I haven't any more) you won't need to do that for hand-painting.

There's the key, in those last three words.  You ARE going to cause damage, of some sort.  Most models are riveted together, and those rivets will have to be drilled out.  Some (I'm thinking 70s Dinky toys here) were held together by screws, which obviously makes life a bit easier.  I would advise using a very small bit to make a pilot hole, then going for one about the diameter of the rivet head.  How you put them back together, I have yet to find out (see my question and some answers on an earlier page!).

Good luck!

I've found this thread invaluable this year, just post up the questions like the 'ask a shiter' thread and someone here will answer within hours if not minutes!

I bought this as a paint stripper for diecast over winter, as can happily use indoors, only £4, but initial efforts on a lesney baseplate are not favourable. Then again, those base plates were painted in the cold war, and are bloody tough.

Let's see anyway.

Just about all the paint strippers are shite now since they've binned off dichloromethane. Even Nitromors is shite now.

^ That. You'd be as well licking the paint off.

In saying that, B&Q Dial stuff isn't the worst of them but really they're all as useless as each other.

Probably a silly question.  Why can't brake fluid be used?  It plays havoc with car paint.
