Pretty certain I know what I’m going to have to do here, much as I don’t want to. But any ideas!?

Thanks to Humbrol and their absolutely shit varnish sprays this has happened.

As usual per the law of sod, it’s happened on a model I really didn’t want it to happen to.
Essentially, I used a can of Humbrol spray varnish in satin, to seal in and protect the paint and transfers. In use the can started ok then rapidly lost pressure for some stupid reason. This left an awful mottled spattered look and a texture like sand paper. I was absolutely fucking livid given how much trouble I’ve had from Humbrol varnish in the last couple of months.

So I let it dry, then carefully wet sanded it the best I could which helped massively.
The next bit is probably my fault but there was reason in my madness… I let it completely dry and warm indoors as well as the can of varnish I was going to use to sort the problem.
I decided to use Tamiya spray varnish instead because Humbrol are clearly useless cunts that can’t make decent varnish or aerosol cans. Within seconds of it going on it reacted with the remnants of the Humbrol varnish and basically turned into a transparent whitish rough finish! Which I’ve managed to wet flat down with 1000 then 1200 grit wet. Unfortunately it hasn’t completely worked this time and left a horrible frosted finish.

Im fucking well pissed off like you wouldn’t believe. Firstly at Humbrol for fucking me over first with shit products but also myself for trying to use different varnish to re-do it.

Im 99% sure it needs stripping and starting over sadly which means around £10 worth of paint & primer is lost, I need to buy new transfers as I don’t have enough left over. It’s also many hours down the toilet getting it to this point.

Any suggestions?? Could polish help??

Ah that sucks, I've had a few disasters in the past with paints reacting, peeling off with the making tape, dropping the casting after painting it, you name it. Always a risk mixing different brands of paint, most of the time you get away with it

I've been messing with a couple of projects, Siku sanded down and given a once over with a plastic scourer prior to paint

This is a really good quality casting as you'd expect from Ze Germans, just a small casting line on each front wing to deal with. Any other defects were due to play damage or corrosion, all very minimal

Other project is this, long story...

What really pisses me off is it happens on the model you really don’t want it to happen to. If it did that to something simple, no drama. Simply strip it and repaint.
This though means I lose all the decals I spent hours doing. The fact I’ve got to strip it means the stripper will also likely damage or remove the filler around the front end joint and possibly the adhesive too. Basically I’m anticipating having to completely start from scratch with it.

All caused by yet another defective can of Humbrol’s piss water varnish! If it’d gone on properly like it’s supposed to none of this would have happened.

Still, as they say, ‘trying is the first step to failing’! Seems a recurring theme to my existence. Amazing how one seemingly small thing can  put you on a massive downer.

I get it, it's a horrible feeling having to go back to square one. I've got a test casting now for any complex paint jobs or mixing of paint brands, just in case - however your lacquer, like my recent primer fiasco, gets you when you're not expecting it with a product you've used before.

I think there's something to be said for splurging on a set of airbrush paints from one manufacturer and sticking to their stuff exclusively, but then I find funky colours in aerosols! That Siku Caddy is painted and looks absolutely crazy, more anon

I think I need to dig my airbrush out and use it more now. The cans are just convenient as there’s no mixing required and they’re just right there on the shelf. But the amount of trouble I’ve had with that one brand recently has put me right off.

Unfortunately that bus wasn’t the only model affected,

This should be a nice satin rich red. It’s now mottled pink and has a texture like sand paper. All the little white dusty bits are what spattered out of the spray can when the pressure dropped off.
I might have saved this one but I don’t think there’s any bringing the bus back.

I think the best thing to do now is put it somewhere you can't see it and get on with a completely different project for the time being.

@danthecapriman try not to let it get you down, although I understand its incredibly frustrating when things don't go to plan. I agree with @Split_Pin, put the model to one side for the moment & come back to it, fresh, another time.

I appreciate its not be the look you were aiming to achieve, but from the photos it looks like the model has a weathered, almost sun bleached finish to the paint, which looks pretty cool in my eyes, however that's irrelevant if its not how you had envisaged the finished model.

What paint stripper are you using? I'm finding most stripper now is gentler to fillers and adhesives than before, so you might be ok when / if you strip the model back.

Cheers!

paint stripper is this stuff.

It’s pretty good stuff. But in the past when I’ve had to strip a model after it’s gone wrong that I’d used filler on it softened the filler as well as the paint. The glue might survive thinking about it, as it was JB weld epoxy.

I might well just shelve this one for now. That really has pissed me off big time.

A last ditch effort to save the International bus today. I couldn’t leave it alone!

Decided I had nothing to lose by trying so first try was some T-Cut on a cotton bud. The idea being to try to gently cut/polish through the bad layer of varnish leaving the paint underneath ok.
This worked, but does come with the danger of cutting through the paint too, which was surprisingly easy to do.

So, second attempt. Use white spirit to soften the varnish then buffing it with a rag to get the varnish off. This seemed to work rather well, so once I was sure it’d be ok I used a blunted cocktail stick and my finger nail to gently scrape away the softened varnish.
It actually came away very easily once the white spirit had been on it for a little while.

This was the result after a wash off and then drying it.

It has lost a bit of paint in places where I burned through with the polish/T-Cut but I think I can probably use that as weathering in a similar way to that Chevy C30 I did with old worn through paint. On this bus it’s gone through the blue into the primer underneath. Exactly what I did deliberately on the Chevy C30!
There’s still a bit of the shitty old varnish to get off in a few places and in the side detail but the vast majority is off.

I think with some extra weathering applied to ‘age’ it a bit, it should look just fine. I was intending to do this as a pretty clean vehicle but the decision on that has been forced on me now!

Some decent finds turned up today - not many sellers at the Friday market, but Colin had some new old-ish Matchbox on the Irish Tat stall:

IMG_20260116_0837512.jpg.b0fa80fc3d4a219aaf8025bd3a17d4bc.jpg

Yup, it's that late 2024 mix that frustrated everyone at the time by hardly seeming to appear anywhere.

Which meant I finally got my hands on this pair:

IMG-20260116-WA00092.jpeg.180e98c2e98f7e0385b47d98eeacc6a9.jpeg

And on these too.

IMG_20260116_0910532.jpg.90393d15f9c1698f72ae9448ccda7134.jpg

I've been waiting a while!

There wasn't much else at the market at all; a fair few empty stalls, and some "bargains" like this:

IMG_20260116_125456.jpg.b05fe1c678d98a3a188afa3b42fd9751.jpg

Yeah, no.

IMG_20260116_1254512.jpg.06dbc4bcd710cecc9f933fecea7c9f8e.jpg

Also no.

A quick rattle through the model shop in Smithfield didn't have very much to tempt, though these red 2CVs seem to be more common than the yellow version - that's the fourth or fifth I've found, whereas I never saw a yellow one in the wild.

IMG-20260116-WA00052.jpeg.ee747408d86bd642e30efa16318838d6.jpeg

Poundland had some decent models still kicking around their dump bins, but no sign of the case with the green Mini yet:

IMG_20260116_1321202.jpg.801427c58c3cf824ef30f30f91875e72.jpg

These Hot Wheels Track Fleet were a decent price though - at £5, half what Smyths and The Entertainer charge.

IMG_20251230_125111.jpg.a47ea864a7f4a4db38f8e5d5bf9f731c.jpg

B&M yielded nothing today - I'm still on the lookout for that Hot Wheels Premium BMW E32 in metallic brown.

IMG_20260116_1615252.jpg.2a0f6f515f1cc4cff7fda14145781d91.jpg

Still, all in all I'm pretty chuffed.

I've been looking at this online...

Ford-Torino-1974-wagon-rq.webp.a31f84221a79ad5219ea1301511147a4.webp

Ford Torino station wagon, obviously.  So I thought, could I make one?

100_3069.JPG.d5a9697e8db846b315f1933114b73230.JPG

Corgi Juniors did the Torino coupe, and Matchbox did the Cougar Villager wagon which in real life would have been based on the Torino platform.  So if you have a couple of beaters lurking, you know where to send them...

But also, working in the small scales is getting increasingly difficult for my eyes and hands.  Now as I posted yesterday, I've just picked up a 1/36 Corgi Torino.  What could I use to make a wagon on that????   Well after a bit of measuring-up this afternoon, a candidate has emerged:

100_3071.JPG.57c9f4fbb52984c00e2eb5e085fdf6bc.JPG

Corgi's 1/36 Range Rover.  It won't be this one, this lives in one of my cabinets, but this is pretty much what they usually look like.  I won't worry about broken doors, bumpers, windows, wheels... I only need an intact shell to carve up.  Anybody wondering what to do with their scrapper? ;)

@eddyramrod I'm pretty sure I still have a Matchbox Superkings Range Rover in my stash (same as pictured below), if that's of use?

Thank you @matt79 but I might have to decline.  There's only one reason: I don't know how the Matchbox measures up against the Corgi.  All the 5-doors I have are the Corgi, so I know that fits against the Torino.  But I do appreciate the offer!
