Shite in Miniature II

I had a good few Lone Stars, having been born in 1959; I also had several Spot-Ons.  Both makers offered some lovely models, but almost all of mine that were left, got moved on in my big Diecast Sale a couple of years ago now.  It's got to be something really special if I'm going to take on such small scale now as my eyes won't cope.

Dan's picked up some beauties hasn't he!  That's the kind of collection we all dream of finding (don't bother denying it!).

Just spent the afternoon going through boxes of the old toy cars I mentioned before.
Anything anyone can tell me about any of them (rarity/value etc etc) much appreciated! I don’t really know that much about the collectible side of things, I just love them for what they are!

Most are Dinky and Corgi toys, but there’s also Lesney/Matchbox and a few others too.

The Oldsmobile Toronado is a Corgi golden jacks jobby. Still works too.
Brinks truck still has the two boxes of US treasury gold bullion in the back too.

When you guys split the bases from the shell, it’s riveted on isn’t it? How do you do it? And how do you reattach it afterwards?

Drill the heads off. Then the base plate comes away.

You can use screws but I have used araldite - you can make it look like a rivet head.

Just a self tapper screw into the rivet part? Interesting. Always fancied a go at restoring one.

Yes. Drill a pilot hole first.

There’s actually two of the Cortina GXL’s above. Both are that copper colour, but ones an early one with the original front end and jewel headlights. The second is the later version with late front end/no jewel headlights.
I didn’t realise there were two types until I saw these!

Yes, the later one looks like the Corgi 'motoring memories' version from the early 2000s which used the old casting with cheap wheels and basic interior. IIRC think the collection also used the old Mk1 Capri casting too, along with a newly tooled Mk1 Escort saloon and van, which haven't been seen since. (I think the Vanguards Escort was a completely new casting). I've got the Cortina in yellow and one of the Escorts in the loft somewhere.

These go back to the late 80's - I remember seeing these when I was at school.

Posted

@AndyW201: Yes, that's essentially correct.  The Motoring Memories Cortina was yellow, the bronze one is from A Century Of Cars, the Hachette partwork from a few years ago, of which I have almost the whole set (delivery became patchy and unreliable towards the end).  These were the same car, which was a simplified version of the old Corgi casting, hence being a two-door.  Vanguards then produced a four-door which appeared in many liveries including several police offerings.  Curiously, I don't remember seeing it as a taxi, despite riding in many in the 70s.

@sutty2006: Go for it!  Restoring is fun, and if they're playworn enough to qualify then you can't hurt the value as they're already worthless.  And it means you can have liveries that Corgi or Dinky never offered, but which might be realistic, such as my now-beige Corgi Jaguar 2.4.

ETA a little tip: start with one (or more) of the older, simpler castings such as the aforementioned Jag, or the likes of a Dinky Austin Devon or Hudson Commodore.  No opening doors and bonnets to deal with!

Or recreate something that would be expensive/rare as I’m doing building my japan spec ISO Grifo.

Are you sure that's not the Corgi Classics range you're thinking of? I remember those from about the late '80s - early '90s, they got me into 'serious' diecast collecting again.

In-depth* research shows the Motoring Memories Fords date from about '98.

I remember picking up the Escort and Cortina up from our local Morrisons about 2001-2002 for I think £4.99 each. I was chuffed with them at the time as it was a good while before Vanguards launched their versions.

@eddyramrod speaking of Corgi Cortinas, are these wheels that I took off the Atlas Cortina any good to you, for the Vanguards MK2 or one of the Consul/Granadas?

You might get away with a small self tapper I suppose but I'd drill the post to a size not much smaller in case the rivet post splits.

I prefer to drill with a 1.5mm bit and use a 2mm tap, then an M2 screw. You can get them with different heads that look similar to the original rivets
