They were 1/18th scale. They also did a McLaren (No. 191). The wheels can be removed by undoing the wheel nuts. The originally came with a wheel brace to aid removal. A bit crude by todays standards, but they were state of the art at the time.

Got the McLaren ( James Hunt) when I was a kid finally got the jps lotus a few years back.

Postie man is working late tonight. I'm sure for most, the prize in the lot I bought is the large scale Corgi JPS Lotus (what scale are these?)

The local collectibles shop has one of the McLarens if you want to complete the set, unboxed but very tidy and £20 IIRC....

F1 stuff doesn't do a lot for me in all honesty, thank you though.

It's an interesting find but I've been weeding out the single seaters from my collection for a little while, also been getting rid of some of the commercial vehicles that don't do it for me.

I've got a lot of cars and I need to keep things in check a bit!

I do like a good Vauxhall /Opel model, since I got the Corsa four years ago (the Mrs has it now), I've tried to build up a collection. Made  a change from buying Vanguards Fords as well...

During lockdown, there was a bit of a glut of GM/Opel dealer packaged models on eBay, all at around a tenner and from decent manufacturers like Minichamps and Schuco. Even the Bulgarian Gama Corsa B remakes got another outing.  I'd been after a GSi for years but people wanted fortunes for them. £8 in dealer packaging? More like it,...

Great collection of Vauxhall and Opels.

And it just shows that if you are prepared to wait, "bargains" do show up on Ebay.

I do not buy of Ebay, as I said before, I get mine stuff at auctions. I had a look through and found the lot that I got the Insignias in. The hammer price was £60, with fees that would have cost £75  for the 9 models. I know it is back in 2016, but the prices will not have changed much. Again, if you are prepared to wait, then bargains show up without the ebay taxes.

You can get some bargains on eBay but it’s a case of ‘right time right place’. I think a lot of the better buys are at the Swapmeets, people tend to be realistic about what things are worth, about the worst are car boots, sellers often think ANYTHING old is worth big coin when in reality they’ve no idea about what is a fairly complex subject. An MB38 in Kellogg’s livery for example is practically worthless, maybe a pound or so as it was produced by the million and isn’t very desirable. A sea green Zodiac on the other hand with the right wheels is worth several hundred.

Crikey! That does show up the ridiculousness of eBay prices. One of those Insignias alone would have a price tag of £40-£50 on there. It is possible to get a good deal on there but it's getting more difficult.

Old yellow box Vanguards can still be had cheaply but anything from the Corgi takeover onwards is getting ridiculous. The "WOW!!! MEGA RARE!!! UNOBTAINABLE!!!" merchants and their shill bidding exploits don't help, thanks to them everyone who goes on eBay to sell thinks their £15-£20 model is worth £50/60/70  now. For a while, I've been after the Tara Green Allegro to complete my Vanguards Allegro collection. Last two on eBay have been £75 and £120. For a pissing model Allegro!

I had to dig deep into the archives for this one. Here is a potato cam screenshot of a picture of it from 2011. I still have it though.

It's by Welly.

That's lovely. I've not gone for 1/18s for a while, mainly because of space reasons, but I might be able to squeeze one of those in...

Popped into the local charity shop this afternoon, they had a big zip-loc bag full of old cars, but wanted £20 for them.

Despite lots of them being from the shrinking hub era, there's just one tyre missing among them

TADS. Pretty much every playworn example you find has them missing

Matchbox 34 Volkswagen Caravette

There was one other vehicle in the bag, didn't even bother taking pictures of it at the time as it was yet another doorless splitty.

But putting it away today, guess what I found inside it?

I was in the loft earlier looking for something. I re-found these. Not  lost  as I knew they were there, but not looked at in a while.

Is that a 1:18 Ertl Roadrunner and a 1:12 Maisto XJ220? Both lovely models. The Roadrunner is a bit basic by today's standards, but what detail is there is absolutely gorgeous, and the proportions are bang on.

The XJ220 a funny one. Maisto didn't quite capture the XJ220's shape; it's rather slabbier than the real thing, although they did a better job on the 1:12 than the 1:18. And at that super-large scale, it really does have a fantastic sense of presence. Mine's on display in the dining room; it's the only model car my other half will allow in 'public facing' areas.

This arrived in the week, going to give it a go as a quick build over Christmas:

1:43 Heller Renault Alpine A310 kit

Said I wouldn't do a 1:43 kit again, but I've started wearing varifocals since then! Couldn't resist the older box art.

Sadly there's a bit of A/B roof pillar damage, but I think I can get it vaguely back into shape.

Ooh, Plymouth Roadrunner?  I'm going to guess MB Collectibles, 1/43, am I right?

The real Mercedes C-111 is really quite elegant but did any toy maker create one that wasn’t a chunky narrow tracked disappointment?

Elegant, yes.  And in a rather fetching orange named weissherbst

There were two main designs, this official photo shows the 1969 C111 on the left and 1970 C111-II on the right.  Behind is the first prototype.

So who did a C111 worse?  On the leftCorgi Toys 'Whizzwheels' alongside the the Matchbox 'Speed Kings' effort

Ken looks on, and is not sure which of the 13 produced that the front and rear treatments are meant to depict, but is pleased they were captured

WP_20221224_14_21_14_Rich.thumb.jpg.fdf5b8fee50d11d1b1e464e27b148e9a.jpg

Both have opening things!  Matchbox displayed what looks to be a tranversely-mounted engine, but forgot to provide an engine lid that would stay up

WP_20221224_14_24_13_Rich.thumb.jpg.e566ca33d1bf597a851018bdbbec4e18.jpg

But what's that over there that Ken has spotted?

Ah-ha!  Ken can tell this is meant to be one of the first of the CIII first series, modelled by Dinky Toys

WP_20221224_14_25_00_Rich.thumb.jpg.788742e1506c0eba341c83358b7107cc.jpg

It seems to be the most authentic effort, although suffers a tad from wonky axles

WP_20221224_14_25_08_Rich.thumb.jpg.b59e6105466284cd8f4f457af01ef2be.jpg

And look!  It has double the amount of opening things!  And a very different engine design - this looks to be longitudinally-mounted

WP_20221224_14_26_27_Rich.thumb.jpg.af2e780e66b42a8def287c03694fe190.jpg

But what's this?!  Farmer Tom has trundled over in his MASSIVE battery-powered job

WP_20221224_14_30_28_Rich.thumb.jpg.ab4c675d192467fa7fc6d593598de122.jpg

It says nothing else but MADE IN HONG KONG on its base, and all the better for it.  Ken is in awe.

WP_20221224_14_28_56_Rich.thumb.jpg.814f8af19e3c04a261245458d71158a4.jpg

Fan fact:  It is known there were two Wankel engine designs tested by Mercedes-Benz in these.

Fun fact to confuse further:  The C111-IID wasn't fitted with a Wankel engine.  It enjoyed* the diesel engine as used in the W115 240D.  That looks more likely what is in the Matchbox model.  More investigation required.
