Wow. That's a lovely haul, there's a couple in there I'd like to track down!

Anyone recognise this 1:43 Golf? Could be a Polo, very little info in the eBay ad and I can't pinpoint it

*edit* it's the Corgi Polo Turbo...

@RoadworkUK love that 1/18 scale Renner 5. Reminds me of the 1/18 Bburago models, used to covet a Mk1 Punto one when I were a wee lad.

Cheers. Yeah, I really wish Bburago had rendered some of their 1:24s in 1:18, especially (off the top of my head) their Merc 190E and Peugeot 405 Turbo 16 rally cars. I regularly think back to receiving and unwrapping my first Bburago 1:18. A red E-type. I was eight. It might as well have been a real car, so detailed and heavy did it seem at the time.

The subject of today's reminder that my phone's camera isn't much cop:

Not a common sight in the UK, but apparently these sold ok in their native Japan.

This is a modern reproduction, rather than a 1970s original, more's the pity.

I bought a few Tomica models when I was last in Japan, but this is the sole survivor. It came from a toyshop in Harajuku, and I think cost me the equivalent of £7.

It also came with a reproduction 1973 Tomica catalogue, which I still enjoy immensely...

This week's finds,part one20220619_203114.thumb.jpg.1229b89bdb2053ae78640e455c8fe661.jpg

These came from a charity shop & a midweek car boot, nothing at all from today's car boot, but my disappointment was not to last very long 😀

This week's finds part two

20220619_205627.thumb.jpg.fc88b33d0f96a81e64f2eb5f7a03aad6.jpg

We went to feed the ducks this afternoon,in the road leading to the pond, there was a house that had some furniture & other things in the drive, with a sign saying donations. We went & had a look, there were DVDs,books, the normal sort of things but nothing we really wanted. The woman came out from the house & said hello,Miss_155 started chatting & it turned out that that the woman's Mum had recently passed away,& she was starting to clear the house out & she had loads more things to get rid of,& she would be putting more out every few days.Miss_155 then asked if she had any toy cars which I thought would be unlikely, but she replied that there were some somewhere that were hers when she was younger. She  went & had a look,& came back with a carrier bag half full.A quick look showed a few interesting things,so I said I'd take them if that was ok.She said yes,& just to put something in the donation pot which I did.

So I got home,& this was what I found

Schabak Passats, these both have parts missing but are still nice20220619_203837.thumb.jpg.61d94ebdd31859fccf7b9daa8b344d6a.jpg

Faded stickers on the doors say 77.

The others are too faded to make out anything.

On these very pages I recently mentioned that I 'needed' a Superfast Flying Bug to complete my set of Matchbox Beetles. It was just after I'd picked up a boxed Volks-Dragon down at Kempton Park, and by happy chance @bunglebusfound one in very nice condition at a boot sale.

Last night I got round to taking some compare-and-contrast photos, I was curious to see what similarity there was (or wasn't) between them. Notes on dates etc are taken from my Claudia Nancy Schiffer book "Matchbox Toys".

IMG_0102.thumb.JPG.fe06197fc0ca79d3af0d087a2977a4d4.JPG

15 VW Beetle 1500 Saloon - I believe it was a carryover from the Regular Wheels range, launched as a Superfast in 1970. Dropped for 1972, I suppose having all four Beetles in the range at the same time was a touch OTT, and by then the custom/fantasy cars were taking over from the crisply-detailed early Superfast road cars.

31 Volks-Dragon - Launched 1971, replaced the Lincoln Continental (as recently discussed on here). It's clearly based on the 1500, but with widened front wings and running boards and a lot of changes around the rear end. Seats appear to be similar but oddly there's no steering wheel.

11 Flying Bug - Replaced the attractive Mercedes scaffolding truck in 1972. It's lost the separate headlights and gained some fairly obvious additions, but it still seems to be a development of the original via elements of Volks-Dragon.

43 Dragon Wheels - Another one from 1972, replacing the Pony Trailer. Remained in the range for a fair while until 1978, you can see mine is a later issue with the dot-dash wheels and stripey box. It has no suspension but does gain a lift-up body - I don't know if the funny car chassis is similar to the Dodge Charger's? Again the basic 1500 bodyshell appears to have been the starting point.

IMG_0115.thumb.JPG.ea8bca89fa43a5f8fae46bd9941fa310.JPG

IMG_0112.thumb.JPG.3f805131dfd8cab38d59a0adff8cd904.JPG

Lots of modifications around the back end.

IMG_0106.thumb.JPG.51bcfde9a717739233394d33e7665e62.JPG

More differences than similarities in the baseplate casting. My Flying Bug appears to be the original issue, with square sticker on the front bootlid and unreinforced baseplate - it gained some little triangular gussets behind those thin parts ahead of the front wheels (although surely they would have been protected by the deeper front wings?).

IMG_0119.thumb.JPG.01938142a4e92bd3398baef2c2504145.JPG

The front bootlid shape is the most recognisably similar element between them all (albet stretched ahead of the windscreen on Dragon Wheels).

IMG_0101.thumb.JPG.998e5a5cc465d427cd9ceca15e31cc4a.JPG

And finally, I thought it ought to have a quick comparison with 14 Mini-Ha-Ha. Both equally silly, with the same head moulding but different helmets.

The only one I recall having as a youngster was the Flying Bug. I have a feeling it was one that got taken to primary school when I was about 5-6 and got borrowed/pinched/lost, so it's the first time I've had a good look at one for 45+ years. Pressing down on the big wing at the back makes it do a satisfying wheelie, and there's a bit of boing to the front suspension when it comes down again.

With a scrap 1500 road car and appropriate skills there's probably scope to make a decent custom Beetle out of it.

Have you seen in the premium range they’ve re done the Dragon Wheels. I’m no VW fanboy but it looks great.

Yes but metallic green which in fairness looks better, keep an eye out on Poundtoy as they frequently have BOGOF on Matchbox, I’m looking through, quite fancy the Real Workin Rigs sliding bed truck and the GM pick up.

Y'know, sometimes I can't see the woods for the trees. Despite being completely mad on Beetles since a very young age, and having the Dragon Wheels and Volks-Dragon as childhood toys, and now of course having owned multiple copies of all four castings, that's the first time seeing that the castings have any similarities. The Dragon Wheels and Flying Bug I'm most surprised by as they're so far removed from a stock Beetle, but now you point it out, it's obvious!

Good idea on making a custom out of the Flying Bug, I have four or five dead ones in the spares box and it worked well on the Mini Ha Ha

Matchbox Mini Ha Ha custom

I know I've mentioned it before, but it also took me far too long to clock that this Husky

I've been pondering this one over the last few days and thought I'd dig out my Superfast version for a little compare and contrast exercise:

IMG_0021.thumb.JPG.9ffb62a9c304cf27c57e2f6167ba8aab.JPG

Box art shows an even lairier green, fortunately the actual metallic colour is a little more subdued. I imagine there must be an earlier Superfast box style as it was in the range from the outset, but this is what I ended up with.

IMG_0028.thumb.JPG.e4c3d4c6637b571bf73a1bdb7db08356.JPG

I think this one suffers due to the higher stance more so than opened-up arches (the latter being very slight, perhaps only on the rear?). Also the sporty wheels don't really go with the Continental's styling, as at 1:1 they look better on steels with full covers. Despite having sprung suspension it's not as effective as on others, being a little too firm to satisfyingly 'boing' off the desktop. Whizzes across it nicely though - musn't lat it do a Thelma and Louise onto the tiled floor though.....

Similar casting lines evident. Front arch doesn't seem to have changed, but the rear gets closer to lining through with the top of the back bumper.

My base also still shiny. No slots at the axle ends.

Boot large enough for 1:64-ish golf clubs, dead bodies or WHY. Tragically unpainted and no bonus items as per Majorette.

Had meant to come back and say thanks for the pics and write-up on the early Superfast version of the #31 Lincoln - that's a lovely example!

Comparing your pics with my regular wheels version, I think the body casting has been untouched - just the changed base to accommodate the higher ride height.

The depth between the top of the arches and the top of the horizontal panels looks pretty similar, and the arch lips have the same profile.

My previous experience of a Superfast Continental was an even later version, which had the body rather artlessly hacked about to accommodate the wider speed wheels, right up to the casting lines...

Yeah. Not good. Not good at all.

I think your version may be the most appealing!
