Bit of a thaw today so decided to make a break for bread freedom. Turned out not to be enough of a thaw. The Disco is now roughly half way up my drive and will be staying there for a while. Was doing fine until it broke through and it bellied out. Always an optimist decided to try to pull it out with the Fergie, and if I had another driver for the Disco I think it might have made it. Oh well, back in the warm and have made some bread so no need to go out for another couple of days at least.

No but i think Officer Crabtree was supposed to be an anglophone agent whose French wasn't very good. Conversely, everybody knows that French people always say, "I shall say zis only once".

Snow looks fun, what side of La Manche is that? We are heading back on Monday so expecting some fun travel both sides.

Mrs B has an embroidery machine and made me a shirt with that on. Nobody has ever reacted to date.

Does the tractor have a hand throttle? That’s (quite literally when I sank in the muck heap) gotten me out of the shit a few times when I’ve been stuck up at the stables and there was nobody about to be second driver for the small tractor there.

A couple of hours digging and the Disco was freed from Ice Station Corsebauld. There was no way it was going any further so I reversed it back home. My neighbour called to say she had been out and had brought me bread and milk, so I decided to take the tractor to where the Disco got stuck then walk from there. Of course, when I got there, I could not resist trying to get a bit further, working on the theory that the Disco should have the weight to pull the Fergie out if I got it stuck in the next little bit. Being stupid adventurous I of course got it just a bit further than my tow rope would reach so I was faced with more shovelling. Instead I decided to keep trying as it was now downhill a bit and amazingly the plan worked. Despite the fergie footrests ploughing the snow along with the engine and back axle casing, I made it to the top of the hill where I met my neighbour for supplies. I fully expected to have to abandon the tractor on the uphill section, but having made ruts through, getting back was no problem.

If we don't get the snow that is forecast, I might have a try at getting all the way tomorrow, but I have sufficient supplies for a week or so again so there is no real need, but it will be fun!

That was probably Xmas 1995. (My son was born in Jan 96, so I remember  it well). Being Christmas the fridge was full, so I  put  some wine on the back door step and it froze solid in a couple of hours.

I think you're right, I remember driving to Glasgow to pick up my SRi130, and it was -18 at Harthill. I also remember cars freezing up on the M90 too. First time I've heard of a running car's radiator freezing. 1997  we lived in Tain, so not that late.

Playing in the snow in an old tractor sounds fun, photos please!!

Guess no popping down the shops today then. Not a drop of snow on the ground yesterday then four to six inches overnight - it is thawing off the trees already so, hopefully, be all disappeared by tomorrow lunchtime.
We seem to be running on two days snow, two days clear, two days ..... Great consistency.  Maybe it should be called Storm Starmer? ;-)

Some understatement there..."damage".

Also how dangerous can a posed photo be?

BBC are classic at this too - pictures of folk standing on seafronts right next to crashing waves or driving at high speed through floodwater. Normalises the nutty.

All clickbait I suppose

What bollocks. Leicestershire here. Endless yellow-amber-rainbow warnings on the news last night. Today we got this..

which has already melted.

London the same. Nothing...so far just not cold and drizzle.

I wonder how long before we get warning fatigue? They come thick and fast.

Interesting article in the Guardian about this issue:

https://www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2026/jan/08/labour-british-state-uk-economy-government

Quote:

"The main job of the state is now to alleviate the consequences of [national] failure, which are becoming ever more pressing."

All this warning and stuff not working in medium-adverse condition is perhaps symptomatic. We live where not much is done - but are warned of those consequences.

The ultimate consequence might be to say what is the state for? comrades as the private sector is not much cop in adversity 😆

A right  ****-up as the news items below set out. Now so much torpor and regulation that everything is a danger or grinds to a halt.
