Diamond sharpening stick that I'm thinking.

That's along the right lines. A small diamond filing stick such as this might be used for rough sharpening any small cutting edge, such as those of turning chisels, craving tools, pruners, secateurs, curved scissors, hoof knives, serrated blades, etc..  They might equally be used fishing hooks and the like.

Of course such a stick may be used for filing and/or deburring ..anywhere a traditional toothed-steel small-round or needle file might have been used, for example around holes and inside corners, inside links when making or repairing jewellery or boat fittings (so as to avoid rope chafe) &/or to clean up a soldered or brazed joint, the flash in the corner of a small casting or forging, or whatever.  Diamond filing sticks are also used for smoothing out the production-moulding flash around a handle, or a chip, in ceramics and glassware.  They're commonly used in model making & with smaller engineered parts in various materials, from semi-rigid plastics to all sorts of metals.. In fact quite handy for all sorts of things ..including a manicure ;)

This one is around about 600grit ..so quite fine but still filing well. Its knurled handle design offers a secure grip for my ogre sized fingers. Otherwise because it inverts / packs inside itself - it's conveniently small in a tool kit.  I don't suppose I'll be using it very often - but I know it'll come in handy because I've worn my small round / needle file out. That is a toothed steel file of the same sort of diameter as this one, but is now well-passed its best in sharpness. I used it for deburring and slightly opening the smaller cnc cut holes when making my boat stove, and I'll be using for little jobs in restoring the old Sunbeam motorcycle.

Like many a peculiar tool - it's used surprisingly often when you have one to hand, but for years beforehand you somehow managed to struggled without !

Thanks again, Bfg.

Anybody want it for the cost of postage - £1.72 ?
