Right. So after far to many years I’ve come to see my kid sister. Other sis a year ago said hey how about me and you just go. We’re leave our families behind it’ll be cheaper and probably more fun. Fuck, why have we not thought this before. Booked flights within the week my only stipulation was that we go in winter for that endless summer kind of vibe. Fantastic.

Shall endeavour to keep this vehicle related though may go off on a tangent. I kind of always do.

Trip so far;

Get to Heathrow. All my bikes are broken so borrowed one from a mate. Free parking at Heathrow and can hot foot it there in under an hour from the flat. £70 cab, not a bit of me.

This things like a space ship. He’s programmed the screen to say hello you cunt when you turn it on too. I missed it in this pic as was early and dark though I felt touched by the gesture.

Under an hour later was parked up with waterproof and lid secured.

Off to seek the next mode of transport. B4312DF7-E027-4FA0-87F9-3C28B0A408D6.thumb.jpeg.00497e5ed3dd1378fb8a55973da10172.jpeg

Que. To join another cue, and another. Then breakfast.

And then a winged automobile to Doha

Never been long haul in a plane. Didn’t like that too much. There was however worse to come.

Updates may take time as only on net whilst at my sisters place. Hopefully I’ll find some interesting chod about the place for you all.

Edit; saga continues…

“You can use that machine over there to check in sir”

Er, no. No I can’t. Help sourced and checked in for second leg and found sis (in the bar of course, good lass) as she’s transferred from Scottish climbs, she don’t live in south east London no more either.

First leg was 8 hours. Second leg was 14. Not best fun (ask the people who sat next to me who put up with all the farts, dribble and nonsense from the hairy bloke who ordered g and t with breakfast). Might as well sit on each others laps but hey means to an end and am here now.

Chod spots to follow.

Missed this out the last post as was in the (best airport in the world) in doha. It was pretty snazzy if you like that kind of thing. I was grumpy from the first leg and it looked like a giant retail park with no outside smoking area for added grumpiness though it did have a train station running through it which was kind of cool and this fancy painted porker on a stand trying to flog some pricey arse watches.

So landed in Melbourne. I thought I was being clever by not mentioning destination before so it would all be a big surprise then noticed I’d named the thread auzchod. Not clever. Oh well.

Little sis picked us up in big car. These are everywhere over here hers is sportage size though plenty other sizes available too. I’ve driven one before they’re alright this one’s 17 plate seats are much comfier than the brand new rental one with leathers I had. That’s counts for a lot when you’ve monkey butt from 24th on a plane. She bought it second hand still under the 7 years warranty, seems a good bet. Anyway have a shit pic of it in the garage of internal jealousy. Two car high roof could almost fit most of my shit in there. Angry looking fucker ain’t it.

Anyway here’s a few;

fitting angle there. Raining, rainy wet and cold. This was not the weather I was hoping for. Quite a few of these Jap midi vans about most badged toyota. Many many more pick ups though and the working chaps and chapettes seem to favour the tray back.

Plenty 4x4s about though this is the only land rover I’ve seen so far.

Loads of roo bars. Apparently they’re not just to make you look big and tough. Roos are bigger and tougher than your 4x4 mate.
Guy sitting this recovery looked plenty tough mind. I think he goes out just to ram roos and puts them on the flat bed to have for dinner.

More tray back action. This one appears to be on the back of a mondy.

Great to see a Fat Chance getting used properly, and with proper kit - I've never seen one that isn't a garage queen in the UK.

That’s what I thought. Simple bikes are the best and it had some really nice bits on it. Xtr group set, pace, race face all a bit grubby from use. Nice.

Lovely merc in the car park of Aldi clearly a looked after example. Watched an old Shelia get into it and drive off proud as punch.

I like a patrol and this quad light one I liked a lot. Shot over the road as I liked the pint I was drinking more.

Slightly better pics of this pair as they’re just around the corner. Am guessing the white one is a holden though Aus car knowledge is poor.

Id roll one of them. Tray back pickups are growing on me too. Detachable camper body made to fit(garden shed) work and pleasure chicken dinner.

This is me in new secondhand jacket in the hail(before I realised it has a hood). Dickhead.

Edit; think it’s a monaro. Pretty sure correct me if I’m wrong tat fans. Whatever it is it’s defo in the fantasy import container.

Nice work! Don't forget to point out to any Aussies you meet how cold and wet it is in Australia compared to back home, they'll appreciate the irony.

I really love trayback utes, they're a real cultural icon in Australia, although I'm never really convinced how useful they are compared to a normal van. My nephew is a tradie on the Gold Coast, and he drives a Holden ute (V6 for economy). Not sure how you secure your tools and equipment in one though, perhaps pikey thieving behaviour is less prevalent there.

A lot of Aussie 4x4s are a bit like the ones you see over here, huge tyres, 4 inch lift, aftermarket bumpers and front protection etc, but never actually used off road.

This one's my favourite so far - 99% sure it's a Commodore VN, 1988-91, or it might be a VP which was the next facelift.  I'd totally have one, but I'd be all barry and do it up as a touring car replica.

I'm very jealous, not just because you're in Australia, but cos your sister has no problems with you flying halfway around the world on a whim to see her, whereas my sister lives within a few minutes walk from my place and doesn't speak to me.

Nice collection there - silver P6 series Ford LTD (c.1976-79) with the Rolls-Royce aping grille; red VB/VC series Holden Commodore wagon (c. 1978-81); white AU series Ford Falcon ute (c. 1998-2002)

Slightly unusual to see a Holden sharing a drive with two Fords - when I lived in Queensland it seemed to be pretty partisan between the marques; you were either a Holden fan or a Ford fan, with not much crossover. Lots of stickers in back windows saying things like "God created HOLDENS to keep the dickheads out of FORDS" (and vice-versa, of course). Not sure where these guys are at now that Holden doesn't exist and Fords aren't built in Aus anymore.

I just drove a brown Toyota and tried to stay out of everyone's way...

Enjoy your trip!

Got chatting to him turns out he was a moisture control expert called Ure sidobed.

Good bit of info all thanks. Should of guessed the Ford Ltd! School boy error.

As a ‘tradie’ I tend to agree on vans verse utes though with advancing years I’m missing the unloading/loading advantage of pick ups over vans. They’re far easier on the back getting all the house on and off. Plus they look cool as fuck.

Check this pigeon out that landed on the fence this morning. Mad.

Now that is a cracker of a spot! You are lucky to see an Alfa of that vintage at a car show here, let alone on the street with a paint job by Dulux!

On the subject of Ute/Van for tradies, the Ute is hands down the preferred vehicle for the building industry. You may see the odd plumber or electrician in a van, but the Ute still has 95% of the market share, and the vast majority of them are tray back.

Boxy greatness. Am a 70’s baby 80’s child after all.

Camper with screen protector. Seen these a lot on flat fronted motors, presume they’re to stop the roos joining you for the drive if you hit one?

Nice well used bush wacker. Some of these wrap around bumper efforts look gr8 for chassis bending wright off though what do I know. This one’s fair subtile, I like it.

Not quite, it’s protecting the windscreen from stones, not kangaroos.

P.S. That blue Holden WB Ute is lovely.

I love Oz and have been to five of the major cities, four of which seem to have beautiful year round sunshine. Then there is Melbourne, it must be the coldest place in Australia. Crowded House's Four Seasons in One Day was written about how suddenly Melbourne weather changes. They even have the original Captain Cooks cottage all the way from Yorkshire which looks splendid in the Melbourne rain!

Ah, stones. Yeah that makes sense as some of them big old screens are hell of expensive. Can’t lie I still prefer my roo theory and may choose to believe it even though I now know it’s wrong.

Well loved tatty skyline. Driver was an hippy looking old boy who looked like he’d killed a crocodile or two.
