Monster throbbing purple chariot action........

I'll give you a moment to get over your disappointment that this thread is only about a car.

I'm very easily influenced by people on the internet, all the more so by threads about stylish 90s coupes with electrical problems, that had not even been posted yet, I blame faceinstergramtwit or something.

I did consider copy and pasting Negative creeps thread on his lovely 406 Coupe and swapping the town of Bodmin for Oxford and Pug 406 for Accord Coupe, but that's just lazy and Negative creep might sue me for copyright.

I'm a fully signed up Honda fanboi and the present owner of this fine example of Japanese design and American build quality

Being off work last week and left unsupervised for more than 4 hours I placed a cheeky bid on a spares or repair Accord V6 down in Oxford with an idling issue with absolutely no need for a spares car or anywhere to store it, but lost out on it as i forgot to activate the eBay sniper.

Que much bitching and complaining at home while feeling slightly relieved at not having to tell the wife what I'd brought, that was until Dvee8 mentioned dropping the seller an email just in case the buyer dropped out.

The seller dropped out.

The accord has been sat for 6 months since the seller brought a disesal Accord to commute in, this had a full Honda history, 96k on the clock and had everything working according to the eBay ad, looked pretty tidy in the pictures as well and it had only developed the idle fault will sitting on his drive.

So a greatly extended drive to Oxford from Wellingborough was embarked on due to some cocks at Silverstone requiring every road in Nothamptonshire closing for the weekend so they can get wet and go deaf at the same time.

The seller was a nice enough chap however the car close up resembled Krytens head with loads of dings and scratches on the bodywork, the A/C didn't work as the pumps been disconnected and it was dead as a door nail as the battery was flat, plus the interior that was supposed to be cream leather now looked the colour of a Sandglow maxi left under a bush for several years.

The full Honda service history is correct and in place, serviced every 12000 miles regardless of cost, shame that 12,000 miles took the previous owner 2 years to typically travel, thanks Dr Wu (I kid you not).

So obviously I still purchased the fine purple steed, tax was acquired and I put 20 liters of pez in from cans as i was pretty sure it wouldn't start again once we had it going after a jumpstart, so no Petrol station Money shot I'm afraid, undeterred we bravely set off home

Drive home passed off with no drama apart from a really high idle when stopped in traffic, which gave the brakes a bit of a work out.

The Idle issue is that when it's warm it revs from 1000 rpm to 2000 rpm and back constantly, it appears to be the Idle Air Control vale on the throttle body, if I block off the vale opening in the Throttle body when it's warm it drops down to a steady 700-800 RPM, as displayed in this high quality Video.

Surprised at being able to actually find the fault I went onto the internet in order to find the part, Lings Honda wanted £426.27. After a stiff drink and a bit of a sit down I've found an equivalent part for £30 in Leamington Spa, when that turns up and hopefully it's ticking over ok I'll sort the back brakes and give it a quick service.

This is how she stands at the moment, shes got MOT till the end of September, decent tires and the Engine is quiet and smooth, best thing is the gearbox which is very slick and in decent nick, which is a rare thing on these coupes.

For all this lovely Purpleness I paid the excessive sum of £180.

Bloody love those coupes. Used to see 2 when I worked at a Honda dealer. The idle valve is normally just gummed up and a strip and clean usually sorts it. Iirc there are one or 2 gaskets that nearly always tear as you remove it tho.

I stripped it down today and the bearings that hold the valve action are moving freely, looks like it might be the electrical part of the valve.  I've checked the 3 pin connector with the ignition on and off against my Silver coupe and they are give the same readings on a multimeter so I'm assuming from the readings that the loom is in good condition.

I've ordered a quality* part for £30 tonight - there really are not a lot of people selling parts for the Accord coupes.

The gasket separating the water channel from the air intake in the IAC valve had split and some water has got inside the Throttle body, not massive amounts as the majority of the coolant is still in the system, but should I be concerned about any leaking into the cylinders and will I have any issues when I start the car. I've left the airbox off to allow it to for the next couple of days while the new IAC valve turns up, should I be ok?

I'm a bit of a novice regarding working on any car TBH, last time I really worked on a car was some time back in the 90s on a P100 and I managed to mightily muck that up as well, so this is about par for the course at the moment.

Glad to be of some help :-D

Very nice. That looks like some Honda collection that you have.

Aye, though the S2000 will be going soon I think, we have had it for 8 years, the wife was quite happy with it until I brought the Coupe, shes since been seduced by heated leather seats and now loosing your fillings while driving round the lovely smooth* streets of wellingborough.

The Silver coupe cost £800 about a year ago, has a slightly knackered gearbox but keeps on going. She just sailed through an MOT with no advisories and is pretty tidy apart from the gearbox.

I can see the purple one being run round in for a bit then being gearbox raped to keep the silver one on the road.

Dr Xiaoping Wu  by any chance?

I've no idea, the service invoices are just made out to Dr Wu.

I'm imagining Dr Wu as some kind of international super villain capable of many nefarious deeds, the worst of which was not getting the oil changed on his cars every year.

That's a quality item there Chuff, always thought they were a good looking thing. And at that price, even if it shits itself tomorrow, you'd get your money back.

I'm resisting saying WCPGW as I tend to put the mockers on stuff.

Webuyanycar.com would give me £205 for it, instant profit.

By the time I've changed the oil, power steering and break fluid and filled and drained the auto box 3 times I'll have spent more on fluids than I would have spent on the car, which is a slightly weird sensation.

Plan is to fix the idle, sort out the back brakes the stick it in for an early MOT, if it doesn't need lads doing then I'll get it serviced and go from there.

Has anyone got any ideas why someone would disconnect the A/C compressor pump, I'd imagine if the A/C is shagged you would just leave it and not turn it on again, but they have actually disconnected the pipes from the pump, which is a bit odd. They haven't capped the pump or the lines either so I would think the entire system is beyond repair now.

What are these like to live with? I'm wondering if I can convince Old Man into considering them.

They are bloody lovely, more like a Legend in size than a UK Accord so big, wafty, quiet and comfortable, you can drive in it all day and you get out nice and fresh

The downside is the epic thirst of the 3.0 V6, it sounds lovely and goes like fook, but I'm not getting much more than 20 - 22 MPG per fill up, the 2.0 4 pot is an F20B so it's a cracking engine as well, but like all Hondas you need to rev it to get the best out of it and it's a big car to move around with 140hp so it wont be quick.

V6 has about 200hp apparently and will do 0-60 in 7 and a bit seconds if you feel brave enough to hammer the autobox getting there handles ok as well but it's no sports car.

The autoboxes of most Hondas of this are are made from balsa wood and bit's of plastic bags and they tend to start to die around 100 - 120K unless you change the ATF on a regular basis, I think Honda reccomened 60k to start with and then came down to 30k once they knew that they were having problems, the later ones have a slightly improved gearbox that's less likely to burn out clutch pack 2. The 2.0 Manuals are pretty bullet proof from what I hear.

They don't rust either my silver one is mint underneath apparently and the purple one looked very clean as well when I was checking it over.

I think the autobox is a bit weak for the V6 but I concur regular fluid changes are a good idea. Mine's on 192k with the original box and has has fluid changes every 36k. Due another one soon.

Aye if you change the fluid they are ok. I've fitted a magnafine filter to the ATF return line on the box from the cooler on the silver one, I'll change it after 6months to see what it's filtering out of the ATF.

Ive read that the problem with the V6 boxes and some of the 4 speeds is that Honda deliberately makes the clutch packs for each gear slip as they change gear to make it a smoother gear change, this combined with an integral filter you can't clean shortens the life's of the auto boxes if you don't change the oil.

Apparently the older Honda auto boxes lasted forever but the changes were harsh, where as now I have a harsh change and a gearbox with a short life, excellent.

Apparently the latest Honda fluid (DW-1 I think?) gives harsher shifts for a longer life. I need 3 litres and have 2L of the old Z-1 so I'll mix and match.

Coxs Honda online was the cheapest I could find for DW-1, £45 for 4 litres much cheaper than the dealers round here who want to charge £15 for a 1litre container, robbing barstewards.

I've been recommended this by a Honda specialist as an alternative to Honda ATF.

http://www.granvilleoil.com/product_info.php?prod_id=580

He swears by it, but I'm not to sure I want to move away from the Honda fluids.

My silver coupe has had a full DW-1 flush through, and seems to holding up ok with it, the changes are mostly pretty good, certainly no harsher than before.

Cheers for that - forwarded the info onto Old Man. Handy info on the autoboxes, but no news to the Old Man. He's had a Prelude 2.0i with probably the same engine as the 2.0 Accord and he enjoyed it, but he likes change and he said he wouldn't have another - same engine + bigger car = no appeal. The V6 is a bit thirsty for his needs.

He currently has a Y-plate old shape auto Civic on 85k (may be for sale in a few months, pending a good 5 door VTi showing up) and changes the ATF every 5k!

Nice. Remember to tell me before you sell the S2000. I quite like it.

I'm selling the S2000!

It should be going soon, either to a dealer I vaguely know or it's going to get chopped in against a ghastly Lexus RX that SWMBO has taken a shine to.

First I have to fix the purple accord, which was made harder by

A) Internet eBay parts person sending me the right valve but deciding that I needed nothing but the power of hope to fix the coolant pipe to the valve body, so they didnt fit a spigot for the hose, it looks a right shonky bit of kit to be honest I don't hold out great hope.

B) I've let coolant into the throttle body by not correctly inserting the funny O ring on the IAC valve, then moving the car, this may have led to water in the bores. Even if it's a little bit I'll take the plugs out and turn the motor over by hand, though I'm not sure how to, spanner on the crank pulley?

I've owned the car for less than a week and I've already done something stupid, I now remember why I pay someone to do this kind of thing usually.

  • 3 weeks later...

Quick update!

The purple coupe has already started save me money* after I swiped the battery for the silver coupe, saving me the princely sum of £80 for a new one.

I swaped the plugs out and checked for water in the bores and they were dry as a bone, which was lovely. It's a shame it took me 4 and a bit hours to get the plugs out.

I've gone all "Vulgalor" on the interior as well, a big bottle of star drops and a scrubbing bush has got most of the interior looking cream again instead of mouldy sandglow. Gliptons and Dr Leather wipes have got the front leather seats and trim looking decent and feeling nice.

I've replaced the IAC valve and it's improved things slightly, which is odd. It now revs from 1100rpm to 1400rpm which is an improvement but still not right. With my now fooked back being an issue I need to decide what to with the car. I'm going to either look for storage to use it as a parts mule or I'll stick it in for a MOT and then sell it on.

Health issues and changing plans have forced me to sell the purple beast on, I'd look for what I paid for it £190, which is the scrap value I've been offered for it, she has got MOT until the 27th September.

Car Tax is NOT included in that price but you can buy the remaining 5 months for £100 if you so wish. V5 is present and in my name.

It still has the idle issues with a surging idle but she drives well, gearbox is sweet and is the engine. The interior has had a bit of a clean and is quite presentable apart from the obligatory drivers side bolster tear in the leather seats.

IAC valve has been replaced which has made some improvements with a lower range to the surging, coolant has been bled and she's got new plugs. 2 fronts are decent but the back tyres may need replacing soon, should be ok for the MOT though. Needs a good service and the fluids changing.

Body work needs a polish and has the dent on the boot and has a dent on the lower passenger side door and 3/4 panel with a couple of deepish scratches so the body work nowhere near perfect but I think a decent mopping with a DA and some polish will have the purple metallic paint looking good. No visible rust.

Air con pump is disconnected and it has a smaller belt fitted to the engine auxiliaries which all seem to work fine. I've been underneath the car and the body is pretty good underneath with no visible signs of rust.

I'd back her to drive anywhere to be honest, she came back from Oxford to Wellingborough with no issues at all, and drives better than my silver one if I'm honest but any time I have when my back is working will be taken up working on the house so she's just gonna sit slowly deteriorating till she gets scrapped/robbed for bits.

There is a good car here, she just needs someone who knows what they are doing to sort out the idle issues, tea, biscuits, tools and help to check her over/fix any issues are on offer for the prospective buyer.

Shes is a 3.0 V6 Auto with cream leather.

Car is located in Wellingborough, Northants which is pretty handy for the M1, A1 and A14
