I was given my first car (a cortina 2.0 ghia) so by my reckoning that would still be free in today's money.

^What he said, except it was a 1960 Austin A40!

Unless: you include the PA Velox that I bought earlier but never got to drive on the road. It cost me 25 whole English pounds. Equates to about 120 using that link.

Hmm, £475 in 1994 is worth £710 today which is actually more than I paid for 4 of my current cars. Only the GT6 cost more. I must be a right tightwad.

Mini City E, cost me the pricely sum of £50 at the age of 13.

Now would cost £60 (If only i could find another that cheap)

I bought my first car for just £50, but it needed a new clutch at £170, so let's say £220. In 2000, which means that it's £290 in 2010 money and probably about £310 in today's terms.

My first car was free.

My second car cost me £2200 in 1989 which equates to £4200 if that website is to be believed - that also means my insurance then cost me £900 in todays money fully comp for a 1.3L Metro with 2 years NCD. And kids today moan about the cost of insurance? They dont know they are born.

That's handy, 1988 is 1/2 2010.

So, my first actual car purchase was £350 then, so £700 now.

My first insurance policy was £325 so £650 TPF+T on a 10 year old Cortina 2.0 Ghia.

Second year was £1480 in 1989 on a Mk2 RS2000 Custom, (age 19) that'd be £2800 now.

Bloody hell, er...

'93 Astra = £70 in 2005 - Today = £77 so not much of a mark up really.

'89 Sierra = Free in 2006 - Today = Free too I guess, but even thats becoming costly

'89 Rover 827Si = £700 in 2007 - Today = £Same

I think I'm a bit too early for this.

first car was an A60, with a few months MOT and no chance of getting another, for £20 which is now £92. Another way of looking at it would be that I paid about twice the scrap value which was about £10 in 1977 so now would be about £400.

216 VDP which cost £200 in 1995 which is now worth the princely sum of £280!

Not a lot of cash for plush carpets and leather.

Get in! I paid £900 for my Metro from Grahm Street Auctions in 1990, it would be £1500 now - thus making it still the most expensive car I've ever bought in relative terms. :D:D

1976 Fiat 131 Mirafiori 1300 for £200 (Today's money £414) with fresh ticket. This was 1988. It 'went like the clappers' and didn't I know it! The then girlfriend enjoyed laying on Fiat's best vinyl seating. A year went by until I slid on some leaves going way too quick and mounted a kerb, clouting the sump hard enough for the air cleaner to impress in the bonnet. Scrapped. Should have put it away - that two-door body is worth a packet today.

1979 Opel Manta SR Coupe replaced it for £880 (£1733). Opposite lock steering was its forte. Sold in a pretty tired condition 18 months later for £450 (£823).

1978 Alfasud 5m bought for £100 (£334). Kept a year, enjoyed it plenty, but gave it away in the end (with MOT) because Alfasuds were unsaleable back in 1991.

1992 (August) bought an A Reg Renault 5 TL, good bodywork but knackered mechanically. Cost £500 would now be £750. I would not be happy if I spent £750 now on a Clio and had the same problems with it, then again I was not happy then!

First car:- Triumph Acclaim, inherited it from the next-door neighbour.

Second car:- Rover 820e, donated by grandparents.

Then company cars, until;

Third car:- Saab 9000 CSE, "given" to me by a customer but I actually ended up "paying" £300, although only £175 ever actually left my wallet, the rest was "subsidised" by BMW...

(Ahem)

Then company cars until;

Then I bought a car! The Audi, splashed out a grand for that, still have it.

Then I bought a car! The Alfa 156, splashed out two large, flogged it almost immediately for three.

Then the 825. Gift from grandparents. Still have it, as it happens...

Total expenditure on cars, like, ever:- £3175. Got three grand back from the Alfa so you could say that I've only ever spent £175 on cars in my life.

Fecking winner.

1971 Mini 1275GT requiring much oxy acetylene usage in 1983 (no mig back then) for £50.00 equates to £130.00 in 2010.

Don't think a tax exempt clubman could be bought for that now let alone a GT.

£220 in 2001 is £280 now. Bargain.

My first car was an Austin 1300 when I was 15 in 1985 - cost me £25 - now £58

When I passed my test I wanted a Chevette but too dear so bought a Viva 1300L cost me £750 in 1988 now £1500 (which sounds about right cause at the time it was a 9 year old car - needed new sills though the following year !!) Which I fit myself after buying a welder from Machine Mart - the viva has gone to the scrap yard to the sky - the welder is still going strong :-)

I then bought a rare Anglia standard to do up - was tidy to start with, cost me £400 in 1988 now £800 which again sounds right..

I bought a Ford 107E in 1997 for £500, today it would cost £700

Quite a lot of scene tax on old Fords now, it would seem!
