Top Gear v Grand Tour

The Grand Tour line-up could be quite good. Thomas and James work very well together on YouTube and have done some similar 'Top Gear Challenge' videos before that worked well. Francis is an interesting character but he did quite well next to Chris Harris on his Channel 4 programme.

Top Gear coming back is only a good thing really. It gives a bit of healthy competition and gives petrolheads more options to watch in a world that is slowly clamping down on the car and making it harder to enjoy them.

Will watch the new top gear, haven't really watched much GT with the old presenters, probably won't with the new ones either.

Dunno why as I'm sure it's more or less the same thing as top gear, just haven't bothered with it.

I'll be watching the Grand Tour, it's cocking about in cars, what's not to like?

They need to move on from trying to recreate the Clarkson/May/Hammond era of Top Gear. That formula worked because of the chemistry between the presenters, though it became increasingly contrived in the later series'.

The one thing the BBC need to take from what Clarkson/Hammond/May/Wilman did with Top Gear is what they did with it 20-odd years ago - take the old format, sling it in the bin and come back with something completely new and fresh. It worked for that particular mix of presenters and styles because it was an original idea by Clarkson & Wilman and they could make it whatever they wanted to be, rather than being given a particular format or style to work to as has happened since. However, this is the Beeb we're on about, so instead they'll have yet another crack at getting three people doing the same old stuff and everyone will tune in and go 'nope, they're not as good as Clarkson, Hammond and May either.' I really, truly hope it won't be the case but I think we all know the answer to that.

The Grand Tour was, like Top Gear, at its best with the big road trips - the African ones in particular - but all four of them knew they had to bring their idea to a dignified end somehow. The last special was done very well in my onion and the brand should have been left there, but Amazon seems to have suffered the same problem as the BBC - they've got this massive brand and idea on their hands and want to keep milking it, but don't know how to without sticking to a formula that the people who came up with it knew was approaching the end of its natural life. It's nice that they've got the old presenters doing a cameo to pass the baton on, but really it should be a complete change away, because the new presenters will be subject to exactly the same criticism as the new Beeb trio.

I am a car guy, they both provide car content programs, all good to me.

IIRC jimmy carr was one of the better celebs on the track in the 2000s TG - and he's quite an experienced broadcaster- i can see where they are coming from.

But 2 others are needed (i think it being a trio will be a thing) - who will they mix and match?

It’s a good money maker for the BBC but, please, God, no more. The format is so tired and predictable. How on earth will they ever find a genuinely new angle, or presenters with character to carry the show?

Mick Jagger and Harrison Ford.

Legacy entertainment format using legacy technology appealing to a diminishing demographic.

Any TicToc or YouTube-er can out-antic them on content.

I mean axing Blankety Blank in favour of Top Sneer 😂

In that case, I nominate Jon Bentley.

Briefly co-hosted Fifth Gear among various other consumer programmes. Often seen on the Gadget Show demonstrating bizarre levels of enthusiasm for domestic appliances.

Has managed to look 64 for about a quarter of a century. Far less irritating than Paddy McGuinness.

For me Top Gear ran out of steam  the last couple of series with the three Musketeers presenting.

Grand Tour was just the same again but with a bigger budget. I found almost all of it tedious.

Top Gear after those three left was just atrocious. The one memorable exception being Chris Harris tribute to Colin McRae.

To produce new episodes of either programme with new presenters is almost certainly a pointless exercise in my opinion.

The chemistry between the three of them, before they started rehashing the same old ideas, was what made it so good.

Its highly unlikely that the lightning will strike twice with new presenters, and thats before they solve the problem of coming up with new ideas.

always found it interesting that hes far more interesting on screen than some of the so called celebs and hes mostly done stuff behind the camera

the grand tour thing - no idea who the beardies are and francis while knows his shit in his area

not exactly mainstream interest is it - even if he is a bit enthusiastic

carr would make me hand in the licence fee if their output wasnt already making me think of doing so

how about hubnut - or is nerd off the scale not their remit :D

I think they should start with some young presenters - a bit of experience in motor sport or technology or journalism - and take a completely left-field view of this like the original TG.

There is so much interesting stuff that is happening automotive-wise that just isn't getting reported.

There is a lot of fun to be had but in a new way.

Otherwise it all just seems old hat for old reactionaries- but maybe that's the point.

I thought one of the names put forward was a racist? Great.

His appearances as a guest were very good, but that's the problem. It strikes me that Jimmy Carr has been drafted in because like Paddy McGuinness he's a big name presenter, not a car person. Clarkson worked as the big name presenter because cars and mechanical stuff has always been his thing, he knew how to write a script (say what you like about his actions and personality but he's an excellent wordsmith) and and knew what he wanted the show to look like. Jimmy Carr is very good at things like 8 of out 10 Cats etc, or presenting a scripted show as a job, but I really don't see where the passion for the subject will come from, especially because his guest appearances were notable for his not knowing 9/10ths of fuck all about cars.

I think Tayne started that rumour.

The sad/entertaining thing is that these days to get attention everything has to be 'controversial' to get content noticed. (Bit like here 😂)

So the BBC production company have drip-fed this news story to engineer just that.

Fronting it could be Kim Jong Un, Meghan Markle and Timmy Mallett for the dream team.

I think the should bring back Angela Rippon and Noel Edmonds.
