Sorry Pete, I've edited my post a bit for clarity. Yours are automatics, I believe...

Posted

I've only got one now, the other went to fund the XJR. Yup, it's auto.

I'm so glad to see how this is getting people's brains going. While there are no "right or wrong" answers as such, some kind of decision would be appreciated (M'Coli!!!!). I like the lateral-thinking of choosing a pushbike for the Alpine road! :D

So let's have another set...

1: Fiat 500, a proper air-cooled one. A Giardiniera (estate) if possible.

2: 1979 Cadillac Fleetwood.

3: Lamborghini Miura. Far more important than the bulldozer deflector is the Matt Monro tape...

4: 1957 Cadillac Eldorado Brougham.

5: My A40 when she's complete!

Posted

1: Something for normal life, day-to-day general-purpose running-around.

An 'as new' 1990/1991 Land Rover Defender 110 200Tdi County Station Wagon in Arrow Red.

2: Something to carry four of you over long distances, with a fortnight's luggage.

A 'hard-dash' Range Rover Vogue SE

3: A sports car for when you feel like taking on that Alpine road.

A Triumph TR6

4: A "Classic" that you can take to the shows and maybe even win a trophy with.

A Rover P6 3500S

5: A total indulgence. A car that gives you the same feelings chocolate does.

A Jensen Interceptor

1. Something for normal life, day-to-day general-purpose running-around.

3-door Range Rover Classic, maybe something like a mechanically-sound-but-cosmetically-shagged CSK - late enough in the model run to have some modern amenities like an autobox, fuel injection, heated seats, only-moderately-crap-ICE etc. but tatty enough to park anywhere without worrying about parking dents/dings or being nicked. Bonus points for removing the back seat and making it more van-like.

2: Something to carry four of you over long distances, with a fortnight's luggage.

Ph. 1 Renault Safrane V6 RXE - had considered a Biturbo Baccara for this, but wanted an auto and I’m also making the assumption that the standard model’s ride would be plusher than the more sport-focussed Biturbo.

3: A sports car for when you feel like taking on that Alpine road.

A new Alpine A110 Legende - if this garage were condensed, then I’d also submit this for slot 1 as well, as multiple reports and reviews suggest that it’s perfectly acceptable for daily usage bar luggage/storage capacity.

4: A "Classic" that you can take to the shows and maybe even win a trophy with.

A pristine Citroen SM, preferably a manual 3.0, in that JRG colour they came in.

5: A total indulgence. A car that gives you the same feelings chocolate does.

R129 SL500 - early enough in the model run that it has a two-tone paint job and the phone-dial wheels. Objectively, there’s no reason to pick this, but I’ve always wanted a wafty convertible and I’ve always wanted a 5-double-oh Benz so it has to be this. In lieu of this, I’d also go for a slightly tatty late-90s Bentley Azure for the same purpose.

Alfisti, fair comment. Stuno, not entirely sure you've got it there, but feel free to have another crack. I do like themed selections!

So ok, let's do themed...

1: Vauxhall Astra 3 Estate

2: Vauxhall Zafira 1, with at least a 2.0 petrol engine and automatic

3: Vauxhall Chevette HSR

4: Vauxhall Victor FD 2000 estate

5: Vauxhall Cresta PA with the Hydramatic gearbox.

Might do some more of these, it's quite a brain exercise...

My theme today is modified or to use that horrible term “Restomod”

1. Runaround for town- assuming that town is Antibes

An electric Mehari.

2. Road trip car for 4 plus luggage.

A Kingsley Range Rover.

3. Sports car for that Alpine Pass.

I’m sure Singer could come up with something.

4. Classic

Pretty sure no Classic event would turn an Aurelia GT away even this 300bhp ‘ outlaw’

5. Pure Indulgence.

Pretty indulgent, probably best kept at my Hawaii house.

Considering how many cars I have I would be doing something wrong if I didn’t already have my dream garage:

1, The best daily I have ever had is:

image.jpeg.f84a0eb3decacbb477c63f992a6825c5.jpeg

Sadly though Cortina’s are now quite rare so for anonymity and better fuel economy the best modern alternative is:

image.jpeg.c329bfd4ae2cfe3ae5761c96bf4a2767.jpeg

2 The Mercedes or 740GLE are both more than competent of carrying 4 plus luggage in comfort, the Cortina estate has done so in the past and would be my choice or maybe the Granada for more space, the Rover 2600 SD1 would also be up to the task so plenty of options here

image.jpeg.82ab0384f0123a80457f6862f3c9fdc3.jpeg

3 Only one serious contender in the fleet, although I would like an Elite or Eclat.

image.jpeg.342963ecbae6bd55e0888df48c09fa7b.jpeg
(not mine but looks identical)

4.  Difficult this as I am not a trophy hunter and like cars to be used but intend restoring my mk3 Cortina GT to as new condition before using it, also the mk1 1500 Super, but will nominate the Mk1 Capri as it is my girlfriends and she is more into shows.

5. The Citroen CX is possibly my most indulgent car and possibly the same feeling as chocolate I.e. nice but not too much of it. Other contenders not in the fleet are a Rolls Royce Camargue and Maserati Khamsin.

1: Something for normal life, day-to-day general-purpose running-around.

Big enough for the three of us, and a Labrador, it'd be a boring but practical estate car, something a bit under the radar though so I'm thinking a Skoda Superb Sportline estate 4x4 280bhp

2: Something to carry four of you over long distances, with a fortnight's luggage.

Australian import Toyota LandCruiser 79 series, "troopy" with the 4.5 V8 diesel

3: A sports car for when you feel like taking on that Alpine road.

Subaru Impreza Classic Type RA, with a subtle exhaust so it doesn't wake the dead

4: A "Classic" that you can take to the shows and maybe even win a trophy with.

Concours Ford Sierra. Not the default Cosworth but the lesser family cooking model, 1.6L, something that could win FOTU

5: A total indulgence. A car that gives you the same feelings chocolate does.

A "restomod" Ford Sierra 3dr, Cosworth looks (ideally solid red with Gold centrelock BBS type wheels), but with a Ecoboost 3.7 Twin Turbo v6, sequential box, full cage etc. Imagine an unliveried Dick Johnson Aussie touring car. In the same garage i'd have a Mk3 Cavalier GSI in the same colour scheme.

I was just putting the bins out and squeezing between cars and realised  most bases are already covered.

1. Volvo C30 2.4 Auto, perfect town hatch.

2. Mercedes e240 , did over 600 miles last Thursday. Just pack light or get a Wagon.

3. Boxster. Maybe not the fastest, but still plenty of fun on that Alpine Pass.

4. E30 316 Auto . Welcome at FOTU , probably.

5 . E90 330i Auto , stretching it a bit , I know. But quite indulgent, a saloon that can only seat 2 people and barely does 22 mpg…

1. Renault 4

My Mk2 Focus does that pretty well.

2: Something to carry four of you over long distances, with a fortnight's luggage.

My Sherpa motorhome if I ever get round to fixing it and fitting the 200tdi from my Discovery.

3: A sports car for when you feel like taking on that Alpine road.

My Rover 220Sli if I ever get round to fixing it (although it's engine in a Lotus 7 shaped thing would be more fun).

4: A "Classic" that you can take to the shows and maybe even win a trophy with.

Dacia 1310 should do

5: A total indulgence. A car that gives you the same feelings chocolate does.

My 405TD executive if it ever worked properly.
