Like my eldest Burnley Mecca Bingo.

I saw a woman on TV years ago who claimed that her father (a Navy man) had named her after the ships in Portsmouth Harbour the day she was born. Her name? Dauntless Gloria Dido Beddoes.

She said that she had always been glad that HMS Cyclops had sailed out on the previous day.

I’d be called Bridlington. I’ve done the maths it’d have been round my dad’s birthday.

My mum worked with a woman that named her daughter Alice Rose. It just sounded like a pleasure cruiser working off Scarborough.

Isn't Bridlington reasonably respectable? It would be better than being called Skeggy, anyway.

Reasonably yes. If it was the sum total of my years effort, my main holiday I’d be disappointed.

Yes just read this - apparently they tried pouring a couple of cans of this stuff down his throat at the 11th hour but it didn’t work.

Aye, can't turn the clocks back I'm afraid.

I always thought naming children after where they were conceived was a bit crass.

I'd never really thought about it until Paris Hilton became famous*.

That was when I decided, yes, it's utterly crass.

Sorry for the thread drift.

RIP Quentin

May he rest in peace he was a great presenter and journalist made Clarkson look like a choir boy!

I used to love the buyers guides and the various documentaries he made over the years especially Rover: The Long goodbye which ive watched so many times.

Don't joke about it, I was a direct result of my dad's 50th birthday party.

Just a pity I'm not his wife's son... 🫣😂

He was only 3 years older than Clarkson.

While Quentin is probably not as memorable as Clarkson especially in later years, he's certainly made an indelible mark on the British automotive landscape.

I always remember his Top Gear piece on why you should buy an XJ-S. I then tried to convince my parents they should get one as much more interesting than the Renault Scenic we had at the time. 😅

Im betting that worked out as well as it did for the rest of us 😄

He had some good taste, if I recall correctly he rescued this place from being demolished and turned into a load of executive style homes:

6 bedroom detached house for sale in Avenue Road, Stratford-upon-Avon, Warwickshire, CV37 https://share.google/lejoP4xDj8oKAkyoQ

I always enjoyed his segments on the old top gear, his Lexus LS400 and Honda Legend reviews still stuck in my memory. RIP

Pretty shocked to read of his passing, definitely one of my motoring heroes.   RIP

RIP qw

For sure- pre internet QW was my only screen exposure to older cars. I remember lapping up this segment in 1991

He doesnt rate buying a banger hyundai stellar, thats for sure. Plus sorry QW id not have bought the 405 but the repossessed, rough 190E. Because.

He also did a segment on buying a silver shudders in the mid 90s, most of which i ignored when buying mine many years later 😂

I used to lap up the first iteration of the TG mag @bramz7 and (true story) my english language GCSE prep was reading Clarkson and Wilson’s columns in the 94-96 TG editions i had to hand and I’m certain it helped me to an A* via osmosis.

But not a fan of snake oil, nor obsessive pondering and speculation to egg up classic car values- because as a pure enthusiast imo this should be an irrelevance- soz QW.

But I feel hes been a force for good overall and have fond memories of his writing and broadcasting, RIP.

RIP Mr Wilson,

I’m too young to remember him on Top Gear but I remember him on Fith Gear also The Cars The Star.

Here’s one of my favourite clips of him doing a section about 205s on Top Gear

He was also a devoted family man. His youngest son was born with issues and he was tireless in looking after him and getting him treatment, not all of it being traditional medicine to help him and others. That kind of stuff never came out about him. He was a genuinely nice man and a genuine motor trade unlike all them on TV now.

I can only assume Morgan Freeman's parents were ok with small spaces.

I first encounterd his work pre TG when he was writing for Buying Cars, later Car Choice magazine. I was quite surprised how posh his voice was when I first heard him on TG.

I admired him because he too hated Lada Rivas.

I know there was some dodgy stuff in his life, but sad.

He never looked particularly robust.

Nobody is perfect I suppose, I’d heard he got done for clocking but for all we know he could have just been made a scapegoat because he was in the television.

That's precisely where I lost interest in him.

He did come across as a smug prick a lot of the time.

Ah the whitewashing of the deceased.

Found guilty of 8 counts of selling cars with false descriptions in 1988, first appeared on tv in 1991.
