Schaefft Posted October 13, 2025 Posted October 13, 2025 2.5k? Aren't these usually significantly more pricey? cpjitservices 1

Early D4s like that one are getting down to those prices now - the 2016 one I got from @Talbot at yours a few weeks back is still worth a chunk as it's ULEZ and cheaper tax. Hope it's a good one @cpjitservices. They're lovely things and fantastic all rounders. warch, Schaefft and cpjitservices 3

warninglight Posted October 13, 2025 Posted October 13, 2025 Nara Bronze I think. Definitely one of the best colours on these!
Gaffer Posted October 13, 2025 Posted October 13, 2025 Cracking combo that, had an identical one through my hands last year. They look well with the wheels and grille insert painted black 🤫 cpjitservices and greengartside 2

I've seen a fair few at that kind of money now (albeit IMO this is the best one i have seen around that price). A lot of people are terrified of them (me included) and can't bring themselves to go with anything that has the 3.0 tdv6.
sutty2006 Posted October 13, 2025 Posted October 13, 2025 These are cheaper than D2s, mainly due to engine failures and the £££ of repairs. great buy. Run it till the engine throws the crank and weigh it in 💪
5speedracer Posted October 14, 2025 Posted October 14, 2025 According to LR Time on YT do not run it on 10W/Dumbass(30) but use 10W/40 for increased lifespan. cpjitservices 1

Aye it is but it's a lot more crank snappy in the disco than it is in the XF. Great purchase anyway, basically my dream motor mercedade, Pat Earrings and cpjitservices 1 2
Gaffer Posted October 14, 2025 Posted October 14, 2025 I’ve had more 2.7s fail than 3.0s so far but agreed they aren’t the most solid of engines in any form. Fantastically smooth and great power and economy for what it is, but let down by being made of chocolate. The worse you treat them the better they seem to last ironically! Also stick with the 5w30 but use a higher spec VW grade. I’ve tried 5w40 and ran into high oil temp issues which weren’t present on 5w30… xfu990 and cpjitservices 2
Split_Pin Posted October 14, 2025 Posted October 14, 2025 Very nice, I've got one of these on my radar to compare it to my L322. Autoshite approved colour scheme too 👌

Not really. The two engines suffer with varying faults. The 2.7 engines original oil pumps fail because of casting defects which being driven off the timing belt, lock the engine up when they go. The main bearings are the show stopper. They don’t have lock tabs on them, so it’s hit and miss as to when they eventually turn on the crank, blocking the oil gallery hole and seizing it solid. My old 2.7 had the new style oil pump and new belts fitted about 10 months before one of the main shells spun and locked the engine. No matter how many oil changes you do, it’s still a risk. the 3.0 engines literally snap the cranks in half. That’s the main one, there’s probably a few more I’ve missed but seams to be the main cause of catastrophic failure. @Gaffer is on the money though. Smooth and powerful engine that returns sensible fuel economy for what it is. I loved mine, and the wife wants another. But I can’t live with that snappy snappy crank risk. IF I get rid of my D2, I think I’d go down the L322 route, either TD6 or a later TDv8. Every other part is straight forward to repair 😅 Mrcento, cpjitservices and Gaffer 1 1 1
EyesWeldedShut Posted October 16, 2025 Posted October 16, 2025 This ends soon - reserve was £2,000 so it's on sale, 7% buyer's premium on top. I think it'll get up to £3K so outside the budget here (a very hard £2,500) but, they are getting cheaper and dropping into the search zone for sprog. [ sold for a smidge under £4,400 including buyers premium ] cpjitservices 1

This is why I'm never tempted by auctions 😂 Trade in direct to auction probably, there's a couple of dealers and finance houses use Brightwells for that. A LOT of the stuff that goes through Brightwells sells at over the CAP - I puzzled that one out loud on AS before and @Kiltox told me the whys and wherefores. I forget the full gist now but I still look at that CAP price and think 'why?' Ex-plod stuff tends to go well there though (but there's some high(ish) reserve prices creeping in to those these days. Auction prices on shite motors in general seem to be all over the place - maybe there's a lot of people trying to buy cheap and flip quick - I dunno. There's better pickings on AutoTrader, FleaBay and FaceAche MarketPlace - PLUS you can do more than just kick the tyres on those rather than just see the motor driven into the hall for ten seconds. (Actually not even that at Brightwells as the auction is 100% online with timed endings - you can view in advance if you rock up there though). Bear 1

cpjitservices Posted October 17, 2025 Author Posted October 17, 2025 Have done decent mileage in it this week, around 200 miles. Its not bad on fuel to be fair! Not bad around the doors either. I love the colour! I keep seeing L322's about though lol!
Split_Pin Posted October 18, 2025 Posted October 18, 2025 What low liability engines are available on these? I dont give a hoot about going fast, why would you when you are basically trying to control a small bungalow. I really fancy one and I've seen loads about.
