Being a sad twat. I've set myself the target to get  100mpg on the 200 mile trip into work, pretty attainable on shorter runs, but that's cheating. I can consistently get 96-98. When I had it MOT  there was very minor brake drag on the front, I've replaced pads and discs and cleaned everything up.

This week.....I will mainly be doing Aero taping.

Impossible to laugh and like at the same time. What a fella. This is why us men exist, to do pointless but weirdly interesting stuff like this 👍

I assume the tyre pressures are already pumped up into the 40s? Best thing is to be able to never use the brake, should save enough easily.

I used to run them at the tyre's max pressure. (Moulded into the sidewall.)

E5 fuel, or that lawnmower stuff with zero ethanol, might help a bit.

A few years ago, I had to travel to another site for a few weeks and had use of a Focus 1.5TDCI.

When I got hold of the car, the trip was showing the average MPG as being in the high-80s. Sure enough, the thing seemed to run on thin air and would do 1000 miles on a tank with ease.

I used it mainly on motorways and A-roads and the average MPG actually began to increase. After a few days, it was into the 90s!

Given that I only drove it on company time, I was quite happy to cruise at 60mph on the motorway. Call me a masochist, but I quite enjoyed the challenge of maintaining as much momentum as possible.

I was determined to get the average MPG into triple figures. I actually got it to 99.9mpg and spent ages anticipating the magic moment. But unfortunately, Ford hadn't programmed it to go into triple figures!

Best of luck with the 100mpg target! You're so close already, I'm sure you can do it!

Is it French?

Japanese! It has the classic blue = cold, red = you should have turned off the engine ten minutes ago indicator.

My best is over 70 mpg in the i10 eco I had, I really wanted to take it somewhere flat like Denmark and see what was possible but it's too late now that it's sold.

And those 70 mpg was measured in fill ups and trip.

Can’t just be me surely?

This is my best coming into work, I thought it was very good considering I have a few junctions and roundabouts on the way in. mpg.jpg.f1bf4f3f0796157a0f163500f9bfac1d.jpg

The highest MPG I got out of my "economical" i10 was around 48 mpg iirc.

Presumably at this stage you also need to check the forecast. Wind speed and direction?

Am I doing it right?

This morning I drove from Silverdale to Leyland, at a steady 70 mph, on the M6.  Instantaneous consumption on the flat was showing 50 mpg.  Uphill it drops to about 40 mpg and downhill rises to about 65 mpg.

It's the 6 miles to the Motorway (it was showing 28 mpg on joining the slip road and Instantaneous was showing down to 4 mpg on the slip road ) and 2 miles after the motorway where the problem lies.

I achieved a glorious 35 mpg.  Over 45 miles.

I worked with someone that plotted his fuel consumption on a graph. Fuck me. I don't think he used the accelerator pedal. The acceleration was glacial. And he sat on the motorway at 50 mph. Never ever braked.

I tried it. Madness.

I know for a fact you were envious.

My attention span can't deal with that level of commitment to a spreadsheet.

No graph but I may* have a spreadsheet or three.
We tried a few variations on the theme last week when we had the chance to use the (flat) French motorways rather than the (not flat) twisty and hilly roads here.
This is a CLK 220CD1, average use at home is ~44mpg.
The best we got was just over 64 mpg a short time after the co-pilot took this. Counter was started with engine/gearbox fully warmed up after we had left Bruges but not quite on the Autoroute. Didn't slip stream anything - just chugged through Flanders with cruise set to 90kmh/56mph.
Worst we got on the same setup was just under 40 mpg on a 130 km/h (35 mile long) stretch Lille > Valenciennes. Not sure I liked doing 80mph on a two lane motorway with a hard shoulder about 6 feet wide - but we lived.

Fuck fuck...2 sets of road works and a car crash of a lorry on way up,  horrendous 88mpg

I managed 112mpg in a 899cc Fiat Cinquecento by drafting a truck all the way from Birmingham to Bristol.

In free air it would do about 65mpg which still wasn't bad.

I have since seen the error of my ways and now own 5 vehicles with an average engine capacity of 5.1 litres.

I love this sort of thing.

Reminds me of a guy I used to work with, he'd charge his 12v battery overnight and remove the alternator belt for coming into work

When I was commuting in my x300 I was determined to get 30mpg so pumped the tyres up to 40psi and changed to 0w30 oil. Still only managed it once mind

My heart bleeds
What about some snake oil in the fuel (or is that cheating)?
