DirtyDaily Adventures - living with an R8

Brilliant. If you can afford to do it then why not? No point in earning brass if you can't enjoy spending it! 👍

Thank you. I would also like to point out I suspect i will be one of the poorest audi r8 owners.

Hopefully it’s everything you want, they are rather troublesome things and RE Performance is the place to get it sorted if needed, awesome cars.

Congratulations!

You probably won't want to know this but... My neighbour two doors down has one. Majority of the time it's broken and a driveway ornament. 🫣

Last thing was an alloy oil pipe that had rotted through. Third one the car had in its life. He replaced it with his brother. Currently broken again as the rear caliper has seized (again). The first gen ones are like big kit car and actually mostly quite easy to fix. Many electrical parts and interior trim is parts binned from the TT/S3.

His 2016 M4 is more reliable and now it's remapped, probably faster. However that doesn't feel special nor get the looks like the R8 does.

Looking forward to this thread!

Good to see this done:

 - The Magnetic Ride suspension was replaced in 2022.

- The seller notes that the air conditioning radiator has been replaced, and the exterior has been machine polished and ceramic coated.

Air conditioning failure can be a massive job and even engine out for some bits.

Magneride is £2500 per shock absorber/strut. My neighbours needed all four. He went with V10 suspension which is conventional and £2500 for all four corners. A bypass kit plugged into the magneride connectors to make the computer think it's all stock and keep it happy.

I had magneride in my TT mk2. That was a mere £450 per shock. However it was phenomenal in making the ride really compliant with sports mode off - despite on 19 inch wheels. Also cornering was far more than you could even push a car legally on a road. I think worth keeping working.

Thanks all. I'll be honest my research has suggested they're quite reliable. Of course all comes down to the car but I suspect a lot of issues some people may have is from not driving the car enough. That shouldn't be an issue for me and since the car has done a fair amount of miles hopefully the same is true for this. It's been REP a couple of times recently for a few fixes and the stage 1 map and carbon clean so I'd like to think they have got it in decent health. I also liked the dyno number at 442hp. A lot of the time standard they barely made 400 so sounds like it will be spritely.
I'm not a fan of the carbon rear wing and it sounds like it will need brake pads all round but since it's the cheapest R8 on the market currently including write offs I will take it. All work I can do myself i will and will be documented. I'll be attending all the shows in it.

I'm not sure I'd be able to tell the difference between 400 and 442 bhp, but I love that you've bought your childhood dream.

Peak power is one thing but apparently they pick up more mid range power than up top so i suspect it would feel faster. Not that I have a comparison to go off mind you.

The good thing about one of these is that whilst they are a proper supercar looks and pedigree wise they share enough bits with some essentially mass market (assuming you consider a 400hp car mass market) Audis that you aren't knackered when it comes to repair or spare options (with my autoshite hat on). I know of someone (not a professional mechanic) with a V10 RS6 who happily undertakes all their own maintenance and repair work on the driveway.

I've never been in an R8, but assuming its the same engine that's in the RS4 (which I have been in) then it'll be an absolute treat, it's one of the best sounding engines of the modern era.

Do you have/did you have that TVR? That would be an *awesome* fleet.

That was the appeal. Vag parts bin is a big bin and relatively affordable in the main. Obviously r8 specific stuff will be expensive but in my experience people try to find solutions to expensive problems.

That TVR never transpired hence this. I'll be honest the r8 seems a very sensible choice in comparison.

You'd be hard pressed to find something less sensible than a TVR!

Yes, but.

GR8 R8 M8!

I reckon these are pretty much a slightly less practical  Audi A2 so should be fun to own & drive.

I’m curious why it’s so cheap, that’s a good £5k less than what they seem to go for?

Do they actually sell though? Best in mind the time of year where people aren't buying, and it's an auction, so some deals to be had if you have the cash available.

Also, bloody well done. That looks mega! I really like these as a complete left field choice that still flies under the radar a bit.

True, it’s that time when people are scratching down the sofa.

I agree on the pricing. Late spring early summer it may fetch closer to 30k but I think a lot of them are priced a little high. I tend to see it quite a lot whereby the auction sales are nearly always much lower than the cheapest on ebay/auto trader etc.
Also 7.2% buyers fee takes it a lot closer to 30k

Fantastic! Great to jump in and buy your dream car. Price seems good to me and I’m sure in the unlikely event you get bored with it you can flog it for similar money or more. Please keep us updated!

Because we are car people there are a few of us on here who have stretched for "out of reach cars" and few regret having done it.

I hope very much you enjoy it.

Ah shit there’s that now. I think it’ll be the death knell for people selling through eBay.
