How many different engine configurations have you owned?

As I was thinking the other day about how I must own a V12 at some point it got me also thinking about all the different configuration of engines I have had so far and how quite a few people on here will have had a lot more.

So to play along list all the different ones you have owned starting at the lowest cylinder count and going from there. I will go first

Inline four (obviously)

Flat four

Inline six

V6

VR6 (I think a VR counts as unique)

V8

That's a pretty short list 😔 must try harder.

Who can get closest to completing the set from single cylinder (Peel P50 springs to mind and Villiers engined Invalid carriages which if I don't mention @LightBulbFunwould) to sixteen cylinder (Any Veyron owners in the house) which is probably the highest possible answer.

Not sure if bikes should be allowed.... That would allow me an extra entry for single cylinder.

All over a range of capacity between 49cc - 11,100cc, two & four stroke, naturally aspirated and forced induction.

Really must try something with more than 4 cylinders at some point.

Straight 3, straight 4, straight 5, straight 6, V6. I would very much like to have something with eight cylinders at some point. And a V4 Saaaaaaab.

Snap + a few V4’s but only up to 5000cc overall.

would also like a square 4 2T but they are all too expensive now.

Nothing exciting here either.
One flat 4 (VW bug)
Numerous straight 4s
Three straight 5s (all Volvos)
A few straights 6s (Merc, Jag, BL, BMW)
One bent 6 (Douvrin Volvo)

Do want a V8 before they all disappear.

Edit: Owned a 3 pot Corsa for about a week once.

4 cylinder carb

4 cylinder mechanical injection

4 cylinder electronic injection

4 cylinder variable valve timing

4cylinder supercharged

5 cylinder turbo

Had to think about it a bit

A few inline 3 (my wife’s cars mainly)

Lots of inline 4

Couple of inline 5 (Volvos of course)

One inline 6

One V6

One V8

Never a V12, always fancied a Jag one at some point but not sure I’ll ever get around to it now

Anyone on here ever had one of those W10 Volkswagens that were around a bit in the 2000s? [EDIT I’m misremembering and meant the W12, forgive me it’s 6am]

Now I’ve gone down a rabbit hole

There's a couple of W8 Passats currently for sale on car&classic, if anyone who wants to complete their set is feeling brave

Um...

Inline 4

Flat 4

V6

That's it!

Do I get extra points for inline 4 cylinder but FWD with a turbo? Ok it's a TDI but must count for something

There was a VAG V10 turbo diesel as well as  petrol W8s and W12s. The W engines are set up like two banks of VR4s for the W8 and two banks of VR6s for the W12.

Boring history of inline 3, inline 4, inline 5, inline 6 here.

Maybe a V10 or V/W12 will join eventually, who knows!

I had a Google and there are also a few articles about a W10 they built prototypes of, but never went into production, basically two VR5's bolted together, very odd

There was the W16 they put in the Veyron too but that's just silly

I thought I'd answered this...

Single - motorsickles in their several

Flat twin - a Citroen Ami

Inline twin - fiat 126 and several motorcycles

V Twin - my SV650

Inline 3 - Suzuki Vitara

Inline 4 - many, many cars and a couple of iron horses.

Flat 4 - a Scooby

Inline 5 - an Volvo

V6 - a Ford engined kit car that never ran right and a couple of Mondeos.

Inline 6 - a Jaaaag and an Ford Pick Up from that America that they have now that was a huge mistake but good fun.

V12 - the worlds rustiest XJS that I owned for the final 3 months of its life.

My plan is to try have owned one of each (Within reason, doubt im picking up a W16 veyron at any point!) before I stop driving. With a very tight budget of about 2k or less each time I buy a car I havent got too far😬
Inline 3 (annoying little Corsa B that I had to get for work and hated every minute)
Inline 4 (Capri in its first 'phase', 2 skoda & 1 VW PDs, an avensis, corolla and todays collection car)
V6 (Capri in its 2nd 'phase', and a Jaaaag S-type)
V8 (the XJR Sitting on the drive which needs an MOT and repairs😬)

So, getting there slowly!

Posted

Thus far I have owned at least one example of each of these:

  • Inline 3
  • Inline 4
  • Flat 4
  • V4
  • Inline 5
  • Inline 6
  • Flat 6
  • V6
  • V8

Has anyone got a favourite? I actually really like the way a straight 6 pulls, I think they’re a good balance between economy* and performance.

Single - 2 and 4 stroke

Parallel twin - 2 and 4 stroke

V twin

Flat twin

Many and inline four

v6

v8

Posted

1- FSi-e, 250 RS

2- 125 Twin

V2-CX500e

2 Flat - Dyanes

3- Wartburg, Corsa

4 inline - numerous

4Flat- GSA

5- numerous

6 in-line - many

6Flat- Porsche

V6- mostly Fords

V8 - a few

V12- Jag

Then of course , there’s the diesel, petrol, 2 Stroke/ 4 stroke.  Turbo or supercharger , auto/manual / semi. Questions.

I think my favourite is straight six with a 5 speed manual on the back of it, obviously rwd. The noise of an E28 528i being rung out is a wondrous thing. See also an old 2500pi or GT6.

Ive driven a lot of modern big engined stuff for work over the years but  so far the VAG V12 diesel  or V10 petrol have eluded me.  I’m ashamed to admit I had a go in a new Bentley V8 Hybrid last week and preferred it to the W12s I’ve driven, perhaps I’m getting woke.

Boringly I've only had 4 and 6 cylinders but if we delve a bit deeper I've had:

Straight 4, inline rear drive

Straight 4, inline front drive

Straight 4, transverse front drive

Straight six, inline rear drive (including a 9.6 and 9.8 litre diesel)

Transverse straight six, front drive obvs.

V6, transverse front drive.

Incidentally, those wanting a 16 cylinder to complete the set, the Veyron is not the only way in. You could try and find a BRM F1 car with an H16 or several types of diesel loco with an English Electric V16.
