Charlie Croker Posted June 16, 2010 Posted June 16, 2010 Hi there. This the first time ive started a topic so i hope ive done it right.lol. We have a late registration topic so thought i would tell you all about a really early one i once saw in Colne Lancashire in 1994. It was a gold Rover 827 Sterling on a C plate. Im sure it had a Coventry plate. The last two letters were WK. Must be very early as the oldest i seem to see are on a D plate. I also remember an ad in CCW for a 1980 on a V plate again the oldest i know of is a W plate as the metro didnt go on sale untill sept 80....development car i think. Anyone know of or seen any other early ones?
warren t claim Posted June 16, 2010 Posted June 16, 2010 I know Thatcher and Kinnock were both given C plate 800's. One red and one blue! I missed out on a Very early plated 2.8 Capri that was a press demo car. (VVW8W IIRC) £900 was cheap for one of them back in 1992.
Father Ted Posted June 16, 2010 Posted June 16, 2010 Old giffer a couple of miles away has a very minty Cinnabar Austin Mini Metro on a Y plate.
r.welfare Posted June 16, 2010 Posted June 16, 2010 "The Professionals" had Mk5 Cortinas on T-plates in some episodes, never seen any that early in the metal though.
Timewaster Posted June 16, 2010 Posted June 16, 2010 Old giffer a couple of miles away has a very minty Cinnabar Austin Mini Metro on a Y plate. My aunt had one on an "X" back in the day. Weren't the press cars "W"s?
Charlie Croker Posted June 16, 2010 Author Posted June 16, 2010 That Capri must must be a early one. Most are X reg onwards. Sounds cheap too. Ahhhh the ones we let go by.lol
Lord Sterling Posted June 16, 2010 Posted June 16, 2010 ...It was a gold Rover 827 Sterling on a C plate. Im sure it had a Coventry plate. The last two letters were WK. Must be very early as the oldest i seem to see are on a D plate...Scuse me while I have a heart attack............ I love Gold mk1 Rover Sterlings Anyway, The car you wil have seen is a pre-production car, all C-plate 800s were pre-production. There are probably 1 or 2 C-plated 800s still in existance. The ending of the plate might have been CWK as some press cars were. They were from 86-88 2.5 Honda engines, 2.7 came in the later half of 88. I have an E-reg 825 Sterling. I'll get me coat...... Anyway, in the early 90s I saw a silver Rover 800 on a C-plate, didnt know at the time they made them that early (I was just a kid, spotting Rover 800s even then!) I'm pretty sure I've seen a F-plated mk3 Fiesta.
brammy777 Posted June 16, 2010 Posted June 16, 2010 There is two (or there was, havent seen them recently) F plate MKIII Fiestas in Basingstoke, one blue and one gold. They were made on F plate but very few seem to remain. There was a W reg Metro at Brooklands earlier this year, its a true gem! Perhaps we could post photos on this thread of first of the line cars? Because they are the hardest ones to see.....
Charlie Croker Posted June 16, 2010 Author Posted June 16, 2010 Lol. At last another 800 spotter. Got to be the mk1 saloon for me. I never thought the hatch/fastbck looked as classy for some reason. As for the pro's cortinas i always thought they were on false plates like the capris and the granada until i checked on the dvla site. They were registerd in july 79. So a couple of months before the mk5 was launched in sept 79. Now where's my anorack!!
Father Ted Posted June 16, 2010 Posted June 16, 2010 Old giffer a couple of miles away has a very minty Cinnabar Austin Mini Metro on a Y plate. My aunt had one on an "X" back in the day. Weren't the press cars "W"s?Launched on a W, but some pre-release ones on a V exist.... Im such an arse, I meant V. In my defence I have just finished my third 13 hour shift
trigger Posted June 16, 2010 Posted June 16, 2010 Princess Diana's old Metro was a W plate. and this one i saw here is also a W plate I think the very first ones in the magazines were on a T plate infact, I had a photo of one in a CAR magazine i had. Also looking through my old road tests this is the oldest Rover 825i i can find, On a C plate. Link to road test
Charlie Croker Posted June 16, 2010 Author Posted June 16, 2010 That sterling is EXACTLY like the one i saw. Oh and yes it would be the 825 and not the 827. My mistake.lol.
autofive Posted June 16, 2010 Posted June 16, 2010 "The Professionals" had Mk5 Cortinas on T-plates in some episodes, never seen any that early in the metal though.wrong way round - mk4s on mk5 plates, and fake plates ones hows about this for an early plate
warren t claim Posted June 16, 2010 Posted June 16, 2010 You could tell a Ford product placement on the TV by the reg plates. They were usually VHK prefixed.
Cavcraft Posted June 16, 2010 Posted June 16, 2010 Ahh, the old rally car trick, hey? I asked a rally prepartion specialists in Newtown (Powys) what the script was with early plates on late cars (such as the Mk2 Escort above) and I can't bloody remember exactly what they said! I'm sure it was some 'implication' of re-shelling Mk1s and something to do with motorsport log books though. Locally there was a 'C' plate Rover 8 series, was there for years (and was bloody tidy too) but it went off the radar a few years back unfortunately. Was once offered a 'T' reg Jag XJ6 Series 3 but it was as rough as arseholes and the engine was knocking like a canvasser on triple bonus.
Lukas Posted June 16, 2010 Posted June 16, 2010 Your "plate-thing" is a complete mystery too me, very interesting though.
Cavcraft Posted June 16, 2010 Posted June 16, 2010 Basically an 'A' reg Montego trumps a 'Y' reg Metro, and a 'T' reg Maxi 1750HLS in Sandglow knocks an 'S' reg XJS V12 (pre-HE) into a cocked trilby.
Lord Sterling Posted June 16, 2010 Posted June 16, 2010 Your "plate-thing" is a complete mystery too me, very interesting though. Dunno what happend, but tried to post this before and it didnt happen Anyway, here in the UK we have whats called prefix and suffix plates. Prefix is: A 123 ABCSuffix is: ABC 123 A Registration plates are issued to cars and stay on the car for its life (Unless you have a personalised plate) A suffix or prefix plates correspond to the year they are issued, i.e ABC 123 Y and A 123 ABC - Would be issued in 1983A 123 ABC and B 123 ABC - Would be issued in 1984 Most of the time you can tell the year of a car by its plate i.e An F-reg car would be from 1988-1989. The reason for this thread is that sometimes, a car will issued with a registration plate that doesnt correspond to when the car was made, i.e, Rover 800s were made until 1996, you might see some Rover 800s with 1999 registration plates, or you may see one with a very early registration. Hope this helps.
autofive Posted June 16, 2010 Posted June 16, 2010 You could tell a Ford product placement on the TV by the reg plates. Pete-M Posted June 16, 2010 Posted June 16, 2010 Still upsets me. NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO Yup. Gutted. It ended up on a really dodgy Everton housing estate, with a bloke who thought the answer to V6 fuel economy was a 1.6 crossflow. I couldn't let him do that, but it needed a power steering rack, a radiator, the roof panel was rotten around the sunroof and it ended up with a Granada 2.8 engine, 5 speed box and Ghia alloys. One thing led to another and it got scrapped at MOT time. It only cost £80 or so to buy, but it was just another Cortina. I knew I'd seen the reg somewhere, but I could have sworn it was the Sweeney. Probably Dennis Waterman is the confusing factor.
