ULEZ and Interesting

Recommended Posts

Alright gang?

Whilst I can always cruise into London in the Sierra, realistically it’s not a great proposition in winter months.

What interesting cars (by our standards) meet regs? I know it’s generally post 2006 petrol, but there are, I’m sure, some other curious propositions that comply.

Trains are great unless it’s a Sunday, there’s a strike or they’re doing engineering works - so it’s something I’m scoping out.

This ulez crap is simply a bloody con and rip off like 99% of stuff in this country.

If a car passes mot it's good to go bloody simple! and no need for sad dick Koont etc to try and tell us otherwise. He's killing London as are other towns and cities up and down the country.

I think history will show he was on the right side of the argument. Granted, it would have sorted itself out organically - but nonetheless we are where we are.

You can still hop on 1972 vintage trains in London. The oldest significant use rolling stock in use in the country. Suffix K reg.

TFL: 1972 - SpotLog

Unfortunately pretty much anything compliant and 'fun' is stung by the daft VED bands of post 2001 vehicles. I still one day fancy something childish like a 300C, S2000 or Impreza Turbo but am less keen on paying £1,000,000 a year in tax.

stuff back to the very early 2000s is sometimes compliant, often if the engine is a fairly new design the manufacturer may have planned to use past the then-impending euro 4 changes

My 2002 BMW 330 is allowed in Bristol Birmingham and London (and any others on Euro 4 petrol rules)

So just to be clear on the rules - most petrol stuff from 2001 onwards will be compliant, everything petrol from 2006 onwards will be. Nothing pre-2001 will be (not by default anyway, i know it's possible to make them compliant if you submit a certificate of conformity from the manufacturer to TfL but I'm guessing that's more practical for a Porsche or something rather than a 1996 Hyundai Lantra). Imports will only work if they're 2006-on.

I would have suggested @Stanky's Sirion but he's just taken it off sale, the selfish bastard.

i've seen a couple of pre 2001 things that have been made compliant by obtaining a certificate of compliance from the manufacturer and jumping through hoops (TFL for London, DVLA for everywhere else) to get the figure noted on the care's record. Not really worth the effort unless the car is special and you go there a lot....

Yaris T-Sport would work for you.

Isn’t literally everything falling off it?!

I’m not buying atm, just getting some inspiration.

I didn’t mean my one!

There are so many choices. What do you require for a car? What about an early Jaguar X Type? 3.0 4x4 and not very much money. Very quick and good fun. Just watch for rust in the sills. Some Rover 75's are ULEZ compliant. What about petrol BMW's? Plenty to be had. You pays your money and takes your choice.

Just sold this. I got a CoC from Porsche and got it listed with TfL as ULEZ compliant. Was an easy and free process.

Its not my kind of car but wow are they good to drive. Incredibly quick, sound fabulous and handle amazingly whilst being compliant enough to not destroy your spine.

Everyone has a different definition of interesting.

For me, these two are interesting to drive and ULEZ/CAZ compliant. Both can be had with decent auto boxes that don't destroy the drive.

Mine are sub £1.5k bottom of the barrel examples but you can have better for not a lot more.

Can’t go wrong with a late petrol Saab IMO 🤷🏻‍♂️

Both my 3.0 Outback and N/A Forester are ULEZ compliant, tax is reasonable on both.

This is some of my assortment of shite that’s ULEZ compliant. Interesting for me means more than 4 cylinders, but YMMV.

Mine are all scrap on wheels sadly, but if you got a working example then you’d be able to go terrorising London with vehicles of increased displacement.

I’ll add that they’re all enjoyable cars to run daily if you don’t mind the cost of fuel and fixing the bits that fall off.

Pretty much almost anything petrol post-2001 as long as it had competitive emissions standards back then. It's pretty much as easy as that. You can check it all online to be in the safe side but I could give 100 suggestions right now. Interesting cars being non-compliant and petrol after 2001 might be the bigger exception.

If Ferrari managed to get the NOx low enough on that F360 to be within Euro4, while still emitting 440g/km, there really is no excuse for other manufacturers at the time!

Our 2001 Y reg Volvo V40 T4 is compliant, the identical 6 week older X reg isn't as the g/kg isn't listed on the V5.

Both of mine are compliant. Z4 3.0Si and Fiesta ST150.  And both great fun.

Technically all 3 but I doubt you'd want to daily a frankensteins monster of an Austin A40.

Petrol Audi A2

Was going to say exactly the same. It’s not fast, but it is (in my outrageously biased opinion) chuckable and fun in a Citroen 2CV kind of way - assuming you’re going for economy and minimal running costs which the 1.4 MPi offers.

If you don’t mind being in a higher VED band, you can afford the £2.5k+ a decent example of the 1.6 FSi version will cost you AND you’re handy with spanners and happy to tinker then much more lovely performance awaits (110 BHP in a sub-1 tonne car).
