Picked this up locally from the partner of my wife's friend.

It's a Mitsubishi ASX, and I must confess, I had no idea what one of those was when I agreed to go and take a look at it.

Clearly it was aimed at the sector of the market occupied by the Qashqai

This one comes with free bollard action:

Looks reasonably smart from here.

The interior is grubby, and the carpet is worn, I will give it a good once over and treat it to some decent floor mats.

I've given the scratches a bit of a polish and they are still there unsurprisingly.

Boot lid is grufty,  apparently a common issue with these.

So far I've put 3 tyres on it, stripped all the brakes and fitted new pads all round - typical japanese stuff with sticky sliders and those shitty little shims that are an arsehole to get back in.

I think it was one of these that @Jimbob McGregor was looking after a couple of years ago. IIRC after cleaning up the brakes the calipers seized again and were £800 to replace.

A quick look at autodoc shows that the cheapest new rear is 31 and the cheapest front is 50 pounds So I struggle to believe it was this a different car?https://www.autodoc.co.uk/car-parts/brake-calipers-10907/mitsubishi/asx/asx-ga-w/12007-1-6-mivec-ga1w

Fun fact. They were also sold as the Peugeot 4008 and Citroen C4 Aircross. Not in the UK though.Though we did get the larger Outlander based 4007 and C Crosser.

More fun facts:  Elsewhere in the world, this is known as the Mitsubishi RVR.  In the USA, it's called the Outlander Sport.  Over the course of it's loooong production run (2010-Present) it's been facelifted THREE times!

A new ASX was released for the European continent in September 2022, a rebadged second-generation Renault Captur.

Pretty lazy rebadge, if you ask me.  They're not even trying to disguise its origins!

Yeah, they did the same trick with the Colt/Clio.

Mitsubishi's future here doesn't look bright atm. Their current lineup consists of models that were introduced eight centuries ago, and blatant rebadges...

Mitsubishi's situation is not much better in America.  Most of their models are so old, the owner's manuals are handwritten on parchment!

There's the aforementioned Outlander Sport, introduced way back in 2010 and facelifted three times since then.  Then there's the "big" Outlander.  The current model was launched in 2021 and is a rebadged Nissan Rogue/X-Trail.  Last and most definitely least is the Mirage, launched in 2014 and facelifted twice since then.  It is one of the cheapest, if not THE cheapest car you can buy in America today.  And that's it.  Three models, two very old and uncompetitive, plus one thinly disguised and woefully mediocre Nissan.

I have no idea why Mitsubishi stays in America.  They used to be the kings of finance for those with poor credit but the Koreans and Nissan stole that customer base from them a long time ago.  And the Mirage is such a miserable turd of a car that you would have to be buying it for the warranty over choosing any decent three-year-old used car.

Chodtastic, Hull Mitsubishi is my local dealer. They now sell Subaru and Isuzu

Father Popsicle ran a 14 plate one of these for a few years, 1.6 manual basic spec. It never put a foot wrong, just annual servicing done. Hes in his 70's, so other than a weekly trip to Morrisons and the odd garden centre it does very low miles and he jokingly said it would be the car to see him out. Due to knee problems he replaced it with a automatic Grandland the week before covid kicked off.

I thought Isuzu buggered off from the UK before Mitsubishi did?

The main thing I remember about these is the shite design of the rear brakes from a serviceability point of view.

I can't remember the exact details but I think the flexy brake hose union is too close to one of the slider bolts. Predictably, because mitsubishi, the sliders seize up and you can't get a tool with enough purchase onto the bolt head, your only option is an open ended spanner which will slip off, or to remove the carrier and caliper as one assembly, which is a bit of a fight in itself wrestling it past the disc while fighting the brake hose and handbrake cable, and then undoing the brake union, then putting your caliper and carrier assembly in a vice with a proper socket and ratchet as you free off the seized slider.

What should be a routine brake pad change gets hindered by a fecking ridiculous bit of design

The 1.8 DiD is known for oil dilution/injector problems. As is the case with many modern diesel mitsubishis with a DPF

TLDR - buy a petrol, that's already had the rear brakes done 😅

Still selling the D-Max and trucks new I believe - there's still a Subaru/Isuzu dealer near me.

My Dad had one of those up until earlier this year when he sold it and bought a Passat (which he is selling now as he isn't very comfortable getting in and out of it)

His ASX was actually quite a high-spec one, a 1.8 Turbo Diesel that was actually quite a hoot to drive. It had after-market Rockford-Fosgate screen stereo, a rear mounted professionally fitted base-box, and I got him some high-quality fitted rubber floor mats (not the cheap chequered crap we get here in the UK)

Similar to these:

https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/256254855686

I can highly reccomend these for mats, a bit expensive but long lasting and not cheap things.

Fatha had to sell his ASX due to the Brussels ULEZ thing. Same reason I'm buying post 2001 petrol cars.

I've never had reason to use them so an in no position to comment as to how good pr otherwise they are, I am though reminded of the time I took my old Fiesta into a Ford dealer for a service and they quoted me for an air conditioning service, which the car didn't have. I don't expect the service receptionist to know the full build spec of every car, though surely to god she could have looked the bugger up on Etis before quoting though

Thanks @95 quid Peugeot but it has gone to a new home with @2110 but I'd be happy to put some stickers up if you'd pass the mats on to him (and assuming he wants them - I fitted some universal rubber ones before it left me)
