Basically nicked the design mate

Actual true fact.

When the Range Rover went upmarket at the beginning of the 80s the LR engineers just look at some wheels on a Ford Mustang and basically nicked the design mate.

The Hillman Avenger preceeded the Marina I think?

The Hillman original with the hockey stick lights did, but looked sufficiently different from the Marina. It was the Chrysler facelift that came afterwards with its revised details (especially the new rear end styling) that looks like it was blatantly inspired by the Marina. They turned a car that didn't really look like a Marina into one that did.

Well, fuck me! I always casually thought those Russian things were actual Transits, with some sort of facelifting of an ancient design like those weird ‘exotic’ VWs that they still churn out 176 years after they stopped making them in Europe. Interesting!

Aston cunningly hid their blatant design rip off though by adding skis to distract everyone. Clever!

Harold Musgrove CEO of Austin Rover sacked star designer David Bache because of the scallops in the sides of the Maestro (and various other perceived design misdemeanors). I think he really didn't like him.

David was right and Harold was wrong - Maestro looks better with the passing years, it's a cool design - and now virtually every car has scalloped flanks of some sort.

Colt like similar lift back Celica where Japanese Mustang 2clone.

Like the earlier Celica was a first gen Firebird clone.
