Favourite car sound?

The obnoxious clatter of a French diesel waking up on a cold early morning or late night in a sleeping residential area.

The comforting whine of an Austin gearbox.

Always loved the noise my first car. a Wartburg Knight 3 cylinder two stroke made, unmistakable.  Those in the know reckoned they were as smooth as a straight six.  Partial to the Citroen GS flat four as well, another smooth motor.

The comforting clunking and knocking of an over-running engine when you switch off on the drive, after you have managed to nurse the misfiring, overheating thing home, rather than have to abandon it and walk.

In no particular order:

Escort twin-cam (at full chat in the early hours on a forest stage);

Any classic Impreza or facelift;

Morris Minor;

5 cylinder Audis;

VW Beetles;

Any V8 (and always worth winding down the window to have a listen).

There are probably more but these are the immediately in my mind ones.

More:

Any straight 6 BMW trying hard;

Ford V6 being given some beans;

And the late, lamented Paxman Valenta engines that used to top and tail the IC125s.  Now they were real screamers (and even more than Mrs martybabes too)!

Metro gear whine, MkV Cortina 1st to 2nd gear whine. Old clattery Ecoshit Vauxhalls in the morning. Dolly Sprint on full chat...

Not strictly a car (well, not a car at all) but for me there's something about the Transit Di engine. I love the way they way they sound as if they're about to stall when you dip the clutch at a roundabout, but then happily settle down to a clattery idle  :-)

Also I've always liked the sound of the air-cooled beetle at full chat. It needs to be a healthy one, not too noisy like a lot are now. I put that one down to growing up at the time of the Herbie films  :-P

I used to like the rattle of the diesel Mercs back in the late 70s and 80s, but for me it's the Jag V12. It can be very quite and civilized when pootering about but when you open it up.........

I love the sound of my 504 most, its not just the engine, every noise it makes is like no other car and makes me feel good whenver i use it.

Frankly, as long as it starts, I don't give a shit!

Actually, scratch that, my old Jag XKR with its new rear straight through pipes....sweet

Best ever for me has to the Mazda 787 which finally won Le Mans about 1991, screaming quad rotor wankel with flame outs and yip yip downchanges.

Tvr's as a road car, of mine Alfa sprint flat four with twin twin chokes and a Corvette with SS exhausts that sounded like it was getting ready to bomb Berlin with it's 400 rpm idle.

Current 2.8 Z3 sounds  like a 90's computer game when you give it the beans.

I used to love the sound the old Range Rover Vogue EFi's made (87-92)

Not so much V8 Burble, it was like the viscous fan was always full on.

Any V8 with a nice burble to it. I do like the TreVoRs for their noise. 8)

As someone else mentioned - the Escorts in full rally tune in a forest somewhere and all that can be heard is the car and the gravel it is kicking up. 8) 8) 8) 8) 8)

As a BMW fan, I cannot go without adding the straight six whether it be the M20 engine or the larger M30 one - all before the things got vanos etc etc etc. :-D

A series on a single silencer, Leyland national bus, the challenger from vanishing point and the rolls Royce from cannonball run.

When I was a kid the sound of a distant Sherpa GT was always recognisable and sounded pretty sporty to me as a 7 year old.

Later as teenager in Wales it was all about Escorts,especially the lad from the next village Malgwyn, I think his name was,he had a mk2 RS1800 with forest arches and 7" minilites. You could hear that thing from miles away, the combination of weber induction noise and single box exhaust was epic,in fact I'm making the noise now in my kitchen,my wife thinks I'm having a stroke.

The sound of an approaching Quattro across a Kielder forest at 2 in the morning is guaranteed to have 2,000 freezing blokes all say ssshhh! At the same time.

Now, I'm a miserable old fucker I find Aston Martins with their electronic blip on start up up contrived and childish and as for those noisy bastards in Caterhams and TVRs who wake me up on their mid-life crisis Sunday morning joyrides.

I do admit to dropping the window a bit whenever an AMG Merc goes past though.

Fairplay to Merc for making cars that look like they should be at the golf club and sound like they should be at a NASCAR meeting!

The noise it makes is one of the reasons I have a volvo 940 td. Diesel clatter, straight six thrum especially when giving it some, plus turbo whistle. lovely.

aside from that, anything with a V8.

That morris minor exhaust fart when changing gear. and the way they go parparparparp! on the over run.

Mind you, smaller Citroens sound ace too. Here's my 2CV some years ago.

mini with an rc40

morris ital 1.3

3.0 s crapi

v6 vectra

to name but a few

I have no idea what an RC40 is, but tuned Minis definitely sounded nicer 20-30 years ago. Proper throaty.

Again a nod to the V8 as the best sound. My classic rangie sounded ace on start up, while ticking over, when it was nailed off the lights, when the auto box kicked down during an overtake... Hmmm... The current green oval wearing vehicle on the drive while nice, it isn't really nice...

rc40 is a zorst which exits in factory position but is somewhat larger than standard ;-)

I didn’t realise we we’re going away from cars. In that case, the sound of a Warrior 512 at full chat

uk_ifv_warrior_arv_001.jpg

I drove one of these on and off for 16 years.  Best thing I ever did, the driver’s hole was a place of refuge, my hidey-hole in bad times, somewhere to keep my coffee and porn, somewhere to sleep etc

And, at full chat, her turbo produced a noise best described as “the sound of freedomâ€Â.

The battle group swore blind that they could hear me coming a mile away. They might have been bluffing but I was usually giving it the big beans. I wasn’t paying for the diesel.

All billy big-bollocks aside, the Warrior left me missing two tones in my right ear. I regard this as a price worth paying. Battle winner.

Here's a video of the same engine in my van several years ago, when I was doing some bodywork on it.

Still can't beat a good V8 though!

^Nice. I reckon the van makes a better echo chamber for getting the proper d24 engine sound. Have you heard the LTs with the straight six petrol? WOOF!!

Posted

Always liked The burble of a Stag.....

Nothing will beat a Rolls Royce Merlin at full chat if we are talking about engine sounds rather than just cars
