Ebay Tat Volume 2 - Sadly deceased.

My hobby is riding in AA low loaders and hanging out on the hard shoulders of motorways at the weekends.

I've got £900 to spend on a new car do I buy this Mazda RX-8 "CAR STARTS AND DRIVES BUT LOSING POWER HENCE " or this diesel Vel Satis "started to smoke and use oil"?

Mrs R has intimated (read "decreed") that when we move back, she would like a Golf convertible. :( This is directly against my better judgement, as it's a VAG product, but if the lady wants a Golf, the lady shall have a Golf.

I'm struggling to add a pic; I thought I had it before but never mind, they aren't that good. It looks like a prospect except the head gasket is gone (seller says). What do we know about these? Does the HGF make it a money pit?

While we're in advice mode, I know I will be wanting a large estate-type vehicle (I'm planning ahead a bit, I know...) so I've been watching things like this:

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/180819932045? ... 1423.l2649

So what do we know about these? I drove a Previa once when it was new, and thought it was very suitably plush. I've also driven a V6 Shogun, but only a (spit) manual.

Whatever I (and she) end up with, it WILL be automatic and petrol-powered; these are just on my watch list for guidance really. Sensibly-related advice welcomed.

That hearse is just too comical to avoid my watch list, even though it's well above what I'd be wanting to pay. Sometimes being so far away both physically and chronologically has its advantages....!

You were reading my mind - I was about to start a thread on whether or not the RX-8 is shite or just shit.

Whip out that rotary nonsense and stick in a nice reliable 1.9 XUD...

WTF! Me too, I've been eyeing them up for a bit now. There have been loads selling for £1k upwards (needing work at that price), most of them with one or several of the common engine problems.

Scroll down this lot: http://www.ebay.co.uk/csc/Cars-/9801/i. ... 86.c0.m283

£2-3k will bag a decent one by the looks.

I think they're fine looking for a modern; something interesting. Anyone had a go in one?

I've tried one of the 250? bhp jobs. Liked it. Absolutely bugger all torque but once they're shifting they do go well.

Wow check out the plush interior on that Warty! Poshest I've ever seen in a mass produced commie motor. Must be a really late one.

I wonder how many dissidents were locked up by the original owner for him to earn that beauty!

Fairly decadent eh?

The ad says it's a 1991 model so it would be one of the last ones built. The factory was taken over by Opel in April 91 I think...

Ah ok. Yes they now make Corsas there.

If it's a 1991 it will have a VW 1.3 engine and also possibly those seats could be VW, which would explain why they are so asperational.

Indeed it has. I wonder if you could put some other VAG engine in like a 150bhp mk3 golf lump. That would be an interesting way to waste a few weeks and £500. Bonus points for overfilling it with oil to simulate a 2 stroke

IFA were making VW engines (for Trabis, Wartys, Barkas' as well as VWs built for the west) from about 1987.

I'm sure something more powerful could be shoved in. I'm gonna have a look on youtube, there's bound to be some crazy eastern europeans who have tried it.

Frankly the idea of a Trabant or Warty with a four stroke engine is as appealing as a woman with no sexy bits. The whole comedic point of these cars is the 'rrrringa ding ding ding' soundtrack and smoke shield when on choke.

These are shite alright thanks to an unfathomable engine and almost total unreliability.

I'm not sure if that maestro van would be good fun or is an utter shitheap.

Either way, it's not worth any more than the £500 it's at now.

I've had a go in one, can't remember whether it was the low or high bhp model, but it was bloody good to drive. The sort of car it would be great to have in the garage for the occasional blast now and again.

For around £2000 I'd rather have a really nice Alfa GTV or 406 V6 than an leggy RX8. They drink oil like a 1950s car did, apparently that's normal for the rotary engine. Plus its 25mpg if you're feather footed, so that's about 15mpg for most of us!

If you spent £25,000 on a new one in 2007 you would get back about £4,000 now assuming it was in perfect nick, that's Laguna level depreciation. I think post 2006 ones get absolutely whalloped with the current road tax levels due to CO2 'emissions'.
