No, it's a Chelsea Tractor or SUV!

If it were we have two Range Rovers and a Discovery.

Ok full own up to estate cars

There is an Alfa 156 V6 Sportswagon - that is with an Alfa specialist because of an intermittent starting issue.

Volvo 740GLE Estate -  needs bringing up from Wales and recommissioning.

Vauxhall Carlton 2.0i Estate - Waiting for better weather before a push to get it back on the road.

Saab 95 - that is currently having its fuel tank repaired.

so that makes 9 in total!

The question is whether this Renault 4 GTL is an estate?

I think it is an estate, because the whole rear door opens to the floor level and the back is fairly upright.

Mrs6C thinks NO, as there is not a saloon/hatch version so there can't be an estate version.

Also Wikipedia says

The Renault 4, or R4 in short (and 4L, pronounced "Quatrelle", in French), is an economy car built by the French company Renault from 1961 to 1994. Although the Renault 4 was first marketed as a short estate or wagon, its minimal rear overhang, and its top-hinged, single-piece tail-gate made it the world's first mass-produced hatchback car

What do you think, Estate or not?

I think it can belong in any thread 😁 but is more than welcome here. Personally I would say it's a hatchback.

The term “hatchback” didn’t appear until 1970 and the R4 predates that. Renault called it a Station wagon. Other cars that are obviously hatchbacks also appeared before 1970. The Maxi and MGB GT spring to mind.

I suppose I should update this to add the latest wagon on the fleet:

The Mk1 Avensis estate might be considered a mildly awkward-looking big thing, based as it is on the Carina E structure, but it's a lovely driver.

Have seen a few hatches and saloons about since acquiring this one, mainly in later VVTi facelifted spec, but no other wagons.

Aye strange isn't it. It was a Ice cream van of sort. It was owned by Camillo Rea from Rea's Creamy Ices aka Chris Rea's Dad in Middlesbrough.

It used to have fridges in the back and aluminium panels over the rear windows that where early reflective road signs flipped over.

That might explain the colour scheme, but am sceptical

Why? I painted it with what ever paint I could find. It is a mongrel of a car but it is what it is.

For some reason, they've mostly been Vauxhall products. But hey, I'm not gonna complain. They've been utterly useful bits of kit to have.

Currently, the Vectra V6 is paying dividends just being so very useful in carrying sofas, doing tip runs, and generally being available when I need it, as well as sounding amazing and generally showing others that whilst its an old Vectra, it can keep its own with modern traffic.

I've taken it abroad a couple of times and I hope to keep both the Jag and Vectra as long term vehicles.

Love an estate car, always have having grown up in them.  Currently don’t have any of dads cars in pictures, but one day when he snuffs it my sister and I hope to get the boxes full of Kodak slides he has of our childhood.
But from memory the list includes…

Austin Cambridge estate, not owned for long but I can just remember we collected a pair of Parker Knoll recliners with it, tailgate down, chairs kind of on top of each other 69 style and me n my sis in amongst them for the drive home.
Replaced with a Triumph 2000 estate, much better tow car as we caravaned regularly by then.
Another Triumph estate but 2500S, horrendous friday car, only had it a year as dad got so pee’d with it.   He’d fancied the new Citroen CX Safari that had just been released the same year, but stuck with British.
So in 1977 we got our first CX Safari estate.  Think the early one was a 2200 petrol.
Only had that a year, dad and his partner needed funds to buy the garage they’d been using for some years or else they had to move premises.  So the CX got sold to some Lord.
In came another one on the then new Lease scheme.  A 2400 petrol this time.
3 years on that had to be sold at the end of the lease, only had 12000miles on it.
Maggies recession was in full flow by then, so the best he could afford then was a 2yr old one, again a 2400 but in Cmatic guise.  Dad had this some time.  It survived a divorce, closing and selling up of his business and a move to Devon back to some of his family and a new marriage.
It eventually got replaced with a Mk2 2500TD model that I don’t think I ever even sat in.

Amongst these a GS estate appeared for a while, I managed to borrow this for a few weeks while my car had some work done,

A BX 19RD, one of the first was also bought new, kind of for his new wife. They still have this afaik.  Theres also a late TurboD in his garage that he’s never managed to get sorted. Needs a rear abs sensor and he’s never managed to find one.

The last CX was replaced with an XM 2.2 petrol (I think) Estate that again they still had last I saw.  (If by chance thats still there when he pops off I might try and inherit it, but highly unlikely).

Mine to follow…with pics hopefully.

It’s practical, efficient and causes few issues, but it’s deadly boring. Kind of the opposite of the car in front…

Unfortunately not. It always amazes me the amount of history that gets lost when the logbooks went digital. I have 5 or 6 extra owners that don't show on the V5 now.
