eBay ringing kit thread

As I mentioned on the "just scrap it" thread, I think it's worth keeping an archive of the obvious ringing kits sold on eBay, and seeing if any of them return to the road. You can report them to eBay I suppose but I don't think they'll do much but pull the listing.

I suggest stating the reg and chassis numbers if shown in the listing, as well as a screenshot or downloaded pic so they stay visible after the listing has disappeared, hopefully this will make life easier searching for them later.

I suppose it wouldn't if that's the route the new owner went, but we've all seen similar things. Just thought it might be interesting to keep tabs on, someone might get their stolen car back. Do you have to have an IVA (or whatever it is now) on a reshell?

It is a fine line between original and triggers broom.  I ‘restored’ a car in my youth.  

It had new front wings and panel, 4 doors and bonnet and boot off another car.  Front windscreen and rear screen out of another car to match the Sundym glass in the ‘new’ doors.  The engine was changed for a unit out of another car.  Gearbox was upgraded to overdrive and I changed the rear axle as well.  Seats came out of yet another car.  Front hubs were changed and many other new parts such as handbrake cables, hoses, cylinders etc. Other than the floor pan, roof and rear wings, very little of the car was as it rolled off the line.  I even changed the colour.

it was a fine car, looked and drove great, but it wasn’t very original.

Registration mark has been voided by the DVLA it looks like, either manually, or by a CoD, but I cant tell which without spending actual moneys, but going by how it supposedly is HPI clear, id say Voided by the DVLA manually (as a CoD would flag up on a HPI check) he could just be lying about it being HPI clear tho LOL

 

the surprising thing is it looks like it had an MOT up till 2010, can a car really fall apart that quickly in just 10 years? LOL

or was it rung even back then, and we are finally looking at the original, that has sat for 30 years in a duck pond LOL

(like some sort of shape shifting alien that has to keep the original somewhere to maintain the image, say like a Zygon LOL)

Yeah I noticed that too. It seems lots of welding had to be done in 2006, then it was on the road till 2010 and 11 years later it looks like this.  It looks as if this one has been stripped for parts, and the remains were left to rot in a damp field till the current owner realized he could make some money off it.

The mini isn't a great example as you could conceivably build the "same" car back from a replacement (new) shell.

Obviously it could also be used to ring a stolen one but that can't really be proven at the time it's offered for sale.

The RS turbo might be a different matter as I don't think you can get Mk4 escort replacement shells? So that can't be reshelled under DVLA rules unless you actually fabbed the missing bits you can't buy.

To be honest I used to report the most blatant ones when I saw them, "Classic range Rover V5 and chassis plate, car not included" ones and never once had one removed from ebay.

Doesn't mean it's not worth having a thread, this forum is public and if you make sure you put the reg in the post a few times in different formats like D701SWL D701 SWL D 701SWL D 701 SWL it will show up if a future owner of that reg happens to Google it.

To be honest, I think most of the classic car community are aware of how valuable the things are now and pretty much any survivor can be tracked back in some way or another through the power of the interweb hence I suspect this is more offering up a new ID rather than "let's go out and find a rs turbo parked on the street and swap its ID". 

Not saying it doesn't go on but my thoughts are more that the type of person who buys a ready made ID is doing so as there's something wrong with their original one, like they got caught out with finance or its been stolen/recovered etc. 

I think somewhere I've got a full ID for a fiesta turbo but I'd never attempt to sell it on as its most likely not been sorn or seem on the road for 25 years!!! I'm sure the DVLA would come round my house for a chat* if that suddenly turned up!!! 

I also had a rotten cossie shell, hpi clear, couple of previous owners I literally couldn't give away about 10 years ago,probably worth a billion quid now. Not sure if it's still in my name 😳😳😳😳.

The chassis is coil sprung, probably from a defender

The running gear is all Defender as you say

The engine is non original again as pointed out

Five speed 90/Defender gearbox

Not sure about the panels and firewall a mixture of Series II/III doors, Series III or 90 wings, Series III firewall and a 90? rear tub

Sort of pre-rung.

That's what I thought, but how much would you have to sink into that half-complete engineless hulk for it to be worth fifty large? Much easier* to pony up 20k then nick a complete and running example, though I'll grant you that (a) you won't find one the same colour on every street corner, and (b) twenty grand is a pretty high stake.

It's a ringing kit. Not worth anything like 20 grand in spares, but it is in identity.

Not sure I'm there on that one, it's a spares or repairs car that is allegedly worth 50-75k when done, if you can find an engine and bumper etc for it? Easier said than done but I reckon theoretically there is a profit in that without being dodgy.

If that's a ringing kit then every damaged car for sale also is (technically they could be used for that but could be used to rebuild in a legal way)

I think to be a ringing kit it has to be a small pile of bran flakes with a chassis plate and V5 or an obvious "memorabilia" attempt to sell an ID only.

Okay, it's a ringing kit with some spare parts thrown in. Based on what the vendor states on the other two ads immediately above, he's making it pretty damn clear that the identity is the valuable bit.

A bit like the old Nova Redtop conversions advertised with 'Up to buyer to change on logbook'. He doesn't give a toss what happens once the twenty bags is in his pocket.

I hadn't clocked that all 3 of those ads were the same seller. 

Clearly he's a shitehawk but I maintain that the Audi is nowhere near as bad as say the Escort ad, there are no pictures in the escort ad really and he is basically stating the shell is beyond use.

In the Audi ad the car clearly exists and he's taken pictures of the seats and shit, it is possible this will be sold for restoration, how likely who knows.

Anyway ebay don't give a shit even when it is a blatant ID only sale, I reported loads and never had one removed. The Audi is just standard spears or reapers fare with an inflated price arguably due to ringing potential.
