Yeah, thanks a MILLION @Austatfor sharing that in the Tat thread.  I need distracting at the moment like I need a dose of the plague.

 

Despite being photographed terribly, hereth lieth a little gemeth.

It's a Ford Escort, resplendent in full bASe spec with vinyl seats, no headrests, no side repeaters, nuffink.  

Would anyone be up for going in for another AS buy?  For me, this sort of stuff is the living embodiment of the Autoshite Community, and I would very much like to play a part in the next 38 years of its life.  Alas, I have spent about £7k this month on old heaps and - no doubt - my wife would Foxtrot Oscar if I said I'd bought this.

That said, I have a "Break Glass in case of Emergency" box which has some heavily soiled notes in it and, best of all, she doesn't know about that.

Appreciate it's more than the Sierra was, but prices are only going one way with these old things and it looks like a decent proposition.

Personally I don't get the group buy thing. I know there have been a few, and I'm happy to chuck a few quid here and there, at times.

Aye, no worries.  In my experience you get two sorts of people who want to get involved.

 

1.  People who want to have a shot at a car but can't/won't afford the whole purchase price (and don't want all the exposure to forthcoming costs)

2.  Folks who just want to chuck a few beer tokens in, or buy the odd bit of trim/spare part .

 

What it does help do is quickly secure a car, and then things can be worked out down the line.  As long as everything's written down and agreed

Meh. Maybe.  But my neighbour owns a quarter of an aeroplane (very common practice apparently) and a girl at work owns half a horse (unsure whether hers is the front or the back)

It was just a thought. A good way of bringing in a proper AS car that we can whore about at shows etc.

I'd probably be up for chucking something in but barring a forum millionaire showing up you're going to be stuck with donations of maybe £100 a shot, so obvs you'll need 25 people interested in a 1/25 share of a car!

I know completely the opposite through the last group buy we did in 2016. 

It’s cool. I think five years ago at a grand there would have been some interest. Now the membership has changed and the prices have changed, it’s probably a non starter. 

A shame. I’d love to pitch up at a few shows with the Sierra and Escort base convoy, complete with AS branding.

I'm not suggesting you wouldn't get the interest, it's just a lot of people owning one car. There's maybe a few here, myself included, that would be interested in a half or quarter share but realistically I would never get to drive it and maybe only see it at the FOD or shows. With that in mind I'd be happy to pay £100 to make sure it doesn't end up on the 'Blue', scraping the ground and covered in stickers because it defo deserves to be preserved.

Yeah, four at £500. There are lots of bonuses - you don’t have to look at the bloody thing all the time, don’t get all the bills etc.

I like that but as above I’d want to know it didn’t have the structural integrity of dry weetabix. I don’t think those hubcaps are original, I think those base escorts just had steels, it’s a shame it’s not the heinously miserable 1.6 Diesel.

There's hubcaps in some pictures and the basic steelies with the centre caps in others. My guess is that they wanted to tart it up a bit for sale or something.

I tend to take a more pragmatic approach to rust with old fords.  ie - they all do it, so just accept it will need doing again and again.

My fully housetrained welder in the next village is an absolute magician and doesn't charge nearly enough money, so welding isn't an issue.  However, funding the bloody thing is.

Indeed. It’s when it wants things like the arches welding, it’s the fannying around blending it in with the filler and painting. A plate the the floor is done and dusted within an hour or two. Has the Sierra had a tickle with the welder?

Yes, suspension mounts at the front were done by Ken (who charged something stupid like £50 a side) and Dicky did some at the back from memory too (I think he stuck a new arch on).

I'm really lucky that Ken the Weld is one of these blokes who's been doing it forever (I would say he's in his late 50s now) and has a couple of really good blokes working with him.  I'm also very lucky that he doesn't like to get tied up in paperwork and administration, and always prefers to be paid in (completely legal) cash.

Having spent a lot longer agonising over the photos, it's a bit grottier than it ought to be at that price.  Granted, the estates are RARE and quite desirable, but there's not a lot of rear arch on the offside, and the drivers side step looks like it's about to disappear too.

It's difficult to value though as there are so few of the bloody things.  (Coz they all rusted away - LOLZ)

I don’t have any monetary value I can throw at this, but I do have a (untested) indicator stalk that I am willing to donate to the car if it arrives in the fold.

I do like it, very nice indeed. Not many owners either, one from 1982 to 1986, the next from ‘86 to 2019 then a couple after that.

It's got 2 door mirrors so not a true base. I'd like to see the dash as well as the base dash is different from all other models as it has no angled central speaker panel and no centre face level vents.

If all of these credentials check out then put me down for the cost of 4 tyres and you can pay me back over a period of 18 years.

The extra door mirror could have been fitted at the dealer.

It does have the proper base dash from the pic in the ad, and also the door trims are correct. Even the tan side stripe is right looking at the July 1982 Ford Cars catalogue. Sienna Brown with tan interior is the right combo on the colour/trim front. 

Hope it makes it into the fold so I can have a proper perv over it at a shitefest/FoD event. Happy to buy it some oil/petrol or other service bits if it does!
