Whilst we are talking about the Doctor, he is a scumbag, I told him my old pin code once he then went back in time, mugged me and withdrew my life-savings. Beware of timelords.

I heard Billie Piper has a fanny like a tardis.

Endless, pointless bitching about "the doctor" that has hijacked the "eBay tat" thread

To quote Ron Burgundy:

I have to disagree on the opticians thing - I've bought mine online for years and saved a fortune.

Yep, the last time I went to an optician the gouging prick charged me £180 for Gant frames - same ones online: 100 dollars from framesdirect.com (and not some chinese no-name website):twisted:

I must have been having an off day cos I usually price-check the shit out of stuff...

The FA.

Rio Ferdinand has been fined for using the racist term "choc-ice", but John Terry was aquitted for calling a mixed-race player a "black cunt". As much as I think Ferdinand is a sanctimonious prick, that's a little unfair.

You pack all your stuff in boxes and think, is that all I have to show for my life? Then you realise that you still need a container to ship it all, and if you put in the Metro van you're going to have just too much for a 20-footer. Shipping the Granada as well means 40ft is definitely required, but shipping that one will mean it hasn't sold, which is my preferred option. Anyway I can't book containers and stuff until some money comes in. There is some coming but nobody can/will tell me exactly when. I need it like yesterday, time's pressing.

As much as I utterly despise Liverpool, Suarez got an 8 match ban for being racist and Ferdinand only ended up with about three minutes of his weekly salary being taken off him.

John Terry also faced a criminal trial (which found him not guilty). Ferdinand didn't have to for some reason.

Not a nice subject sorry, but why can't someone get hold of that bastard Ian Brady and torture him?

Probably because the only people willing to do that would be people like Brady themselves. And much as it might help society to employ its sociopaths to constructive purpose, I can see a downside. Mind you, it could be cheap - a couple of ads in the Daily Mail and I'm sure you could raise a lynch mob for such eventualities.

Football & Racism. Two things I never want to discuss on the internet, but.....

Isn't Rio Ferdinand black?

I'm white, and I'm pretty sure if I made a racist comment about another white person I wouldn't get done for it, so actually what the f*ck is that all about? (assuming I am an internationally famous sportsman)

Ah yes, but then you're not a role model... (except in the rather niche autoshite sense of leaning jauntily against decaying chod wearing the brownest trousers known to mankind)

He's mixed race (or half cast if it's not too PC).Apparently blacks call mixed race people "choc ice" because they are brown on the outside and white inside.

Eddy, Get it shipped on a charges collect basis. That way you can pay when it arrives in the UK. Will give you a little more breathing space

Eddy -drive the Granny back -a framing the metro. You'll get shedloads in both - reducing the container dramatically, save a shedful on air fares, and have a ball.

Cant be difficult to get a car ferry to Piraeus, drive across to Patras for an overnight to Brindisi (or Bari) then a gentle 3 days home.

I have to disagree on the opticians thing - I've bought mine online for years and saved a fortune. High St. opticians charge me £100+ just for my lenses (I have an astigmatism) my usual cost for a pair of specs was £2-300. The last glasses I bought online cost me £70 all in for a decent make and I bought a cheap pair for reading use for £20. No problems with them at all.

I use the high st. opticians once a year to get my eyes tested, usually when they're doing half price eye tests.

I have used the local Specsavers the last few times.

Used to use independent opticians and was severely ripped off time after time.

My daughter discovered a great place, University Opticians in Newcastle and she got an unbelievable deal on specs and contacts so we all ended up going there for years.

My work in Newcastle ended and after breaking my specs I wandered into Specsavers, only a mile from home and I was in the shopping centre anyway.

I wasn't expecting much but was impressed with their efficiency and professionalism, at least as good as the UO. Not quite as friendly but good at what they did.

I chose "Buddy Holly" frames as I am a complete clutz with specs and ruin them in no time.

Two pair for fifty quid. One pair for work and one for home.

Went back a couple of years later and got another two pair - still had the BH ones but they no longer had those frames so went for steel rimmed 'designer' ones, two pair for £75 all in.

I have smashed the BH ones that I kept at work (ran over one pair with a fork lift). and managed to lose a pair of the steel ones a month ago.

They have sent loads of letters 'inviting' me in for more and I really need to go, current ones, last pair, are scratched to buggery and twisted and bent all over the place so don't sit right.

Unfortunately I can't get into the opticians for folks hanging around all the entrances smoking, and people inside overdosing on deodorant.

I'm seriously astigmatic too so over the counter stuff doesn't work at all.

They''ve also banned gay parades for 100 years. And we in the West boast about how open we are, how much we respect human rights and all that shit while happily trading with misanthropist dictators such as Putin and the 'free market' (as long as it's not chewing gum) Singaporeans who are so enlightened as to use coropral punishment on convicts (in addition to, of course, banning gays again).

Not sure how I feel about the Pussy Riot thing. On the one hand, it seems a bit heavy, on the other, screaming abuse in a church is not exactly a very friendly thing to do and the whole thing smacks of a giant publicity stunt. I can't stand religion, but I don't go running into churches, mosques or synagogues to scream my views in a disrespectful manner. Go looking for trouble and you're sure to find it.

The anti-gay stance of Russia is entirely appalling though, if an entirely different matter. That's far more upsetting than locking up some so-called musicians.

Just seen that Keith Bennets mother died, a day after this news about Brady maybe giving away te location of her sons body. So sad.

And I really think that Pussy Riot thing was a publicity stunt (who had heard of them before?) but I recon they didn't expect such serious consequences!

Indeed.

Also very true, though if their records have suddenly started selling, at least they'll have some cash waiting for them when they come out. I've listened to some of their stuff and frankly they deserve to stay skint.

It really does piss me off this sort of thing. It's like riot Police. Have you seen the shit they have to put up with? People literally screaming obscenities in their face in the hope they can provoke a rightly-deserved thwack with a stick so they can post the video on YouTube and claim "OMG POLICE R SO VIELUNT!" You get the odd bad egg for sure - that chap that avoided prosecution for hitting a bloke who was actually walking away from him (though even he'd been trying to break through the ranks to get home). But everyone always seems to side with the trouble-makers. I'm all for freedom but some people just take the piss and don't realise how grateful they should be for what they have.

The thing with Pussy Riot isn't that they were arrested and put to trial. The thing is that the punishment is absolutely out of proportion with the crime. A fine and a few hours of community service would've been more than enough. You want to appear tough? Hand them a suspended sentence, too. Actually putting them in jail for two years is completely idiotic.

Is it really? I find it amusing that the UK is one of those crowing how out of proportion these sentences are, when we've been locking people up for THREE years for trying to start a riot on Facebook - which you could argue is just stupid trolling. Seem to recall the US wasn't exactly allowing free speech when it came to the whole Occupy thing either.

Stupid trolling that was leading to rioting, looting and arson.

Those punk bints WERE wrong to shout abuse in a church, I fully agree with you there. Incredibly disrespectful and a blatant publicity stunt, though obviously a more lenient sentence would have been better.

The biggest shame of the day was poor old Mrs Bennet, I'm not really religious but I'm sure her and her son are at last reunited.

I don't disagree with that. Totalitarianism seems to be gaining ground in a lot of places.

Great idea Nigel...but!

1: I seriously doubt the Granada's ability to make the trip

2: I seriously doubt my ability to make the trip, at the moment

3: Granada doesn't have a towbar for A-framing :(

3: I suspect I'd have to buy an A-frame on ebay and have it shipped here, even assuming I could find a towbar here

4: and most importantly, Mrs R would have serious difficulties making the trip.

Also 5: we have waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay too much stuff to fill the two cars

6: petrol would cost at least 400 times airfares

7: the dog would present further difficulties on such a trip

8: When we came we looked into driving, and couldn't find a ferry service we could use, which is why I gave away my beloved Volvo.

So I'm afraid the idea flies in exactly the way I swim, ie like a brick. But in other circumstances.....

Peter, I didn't know that was possible, I'll make some enquiries, thank you.

Nope, I don't agree with that. Firstly, it wasn't abuse - it was profanity contained within song lyrics. Secondly, it was aimed at the church establishment, in particular at its support of Putin's semi-dictatorship. So where better to demonstrate than in a church? Thirdly, if those so-called christians were actually christians, why didn't they just forgive the girls?

Uh-oh... here comes a rant...

And why does religion deserve respect, anyway? It's the single most divisive thing on the planet. Middle East, Northern Ireland, Crusades, English Reformation, the Holocaust, etc. etc.

And that's leaving aside the howling, barking lunacy of god-botherers' assertion that there's a magic man in the sky who sacrificed himself to himself to somehow compensate for the slavery, genocide, rape, etc. that he sanctioned in his first compilation of stories where he allegedly lorded it over some illiterate Middle Eastern folks (but laughably wasn't tough enough to defeat iron chariots... Judges 1:19), written by persons unknown - but probably Middle Ages monks who had a vested interest in writing themselves into a lucrative and lazy career by duping the ignorant masses. And amazingly, people that are rational and logical in all other aspects of their lives still lap up this absolute arse gravy.

Religion? Fuck it.

Posted

I'm no fan of religion (very far from it), but there's something very wrong with storming into a place of worship and ranting, even if it is within a so-called song. They did what they did precisely to make as big a statement as possible. They got banged up for it. There are far bigger injustices in the world than people getting locked up for being at best horrendously impolite.

Profanity is profanity. You can't pretend it's harmless art just because it's in a song.

Religion is responsible for many wrongs but I still feel it deserves some respect in its own place. Come knocking on my door to sell me god and I'll tell you to piss off, but I won't storm into a church to tell you so.

Posted

I'd argue that profanity *is* harmless - sticks & stones, etc. All it can possibly do is hurt the feelings of prudish people.

+1 on thatDW.

As for the Pussy Riot thing in general whilst it shows the Putin regime for what it is (ruthless, horrible and totally opposed to opposition) there are far worse evils in the world. Most people in the UK have never heard of the farm murders in South Africa (which amounts to state sponsored genocide against white minority farmers), the terrible human rights records of the various "-istans" or half the shit that goes down in South America. Yet we constantly get babble about Russia which is a country we have no hope of changing, we send Hague/Miliband etc over to lecture Putin on human rights and he tells us to piss off. Whereas if our government/we wanted to do good (which TBH is something we clearly can we'd sort our own house out and then go and do something somewhere where we can make a difference).
