As a postman, first I'd like to stress that Royal Mail and the Post Office are no longer the same company, haven't been since 2006, but in both cases we are no longer a public service, purely a business. Sad but true. 

I have nine years until I reach state pension age but I look around me at work these days and wonder if the company will last that long. You wouldn't think a company 510 years old could fail but I sometimes think I might see the end of it before I retire.

I was in South Shields town centre earlier and expected the Post Office to be open, busy day.

Wasn't.  Neither was the one in Jarrow town centre.

I think most stand-alone offices shut at 1 on Saturday. No PO's in convenience stores round that way?

Woke up this morning to a strong smell of smoke…

Normally that view into the back garden you can see the hills and forest over the back very clearly but it’s covered in a smoke blanket this morning and getting worse. Lots of fire engines around the area too.

 
Not good! 
Theres lots of wild fires all over the country at the moment but it’s looking probable that we now have one on our doorstep sadly. I just hope they can catch it early.

We’ve had a bit of rain (Scottish Borders) but not much. Everywhere is still quite dry. However Thursday night some morons were letting off fireworks (after a funeral apparently, new one on me). Are people born so stupid or is it something you have to work at?

People really are that stupid. I’m convinced it’s genetic these days.

I can’t remember the last time we had any real rain. Everything is bone dry, grass dead or dying. Even the trees are starting to wilt. My Sequoia is loving it though! It’s grown about two feet this year!

Despite the driest and devastating fires here in Spain They will still set of fireworks for every fiestas . no mater if it is a village, town or city. Numb-scales.

The Mrs. has gone batshit mental this weekend. Due to crap road design, plus Leeds you get cars beeping. She's going to write to the council and complain. So far so usual.

One goes beep this morning and she screams "This is a Christian country!!!"

Explain plz. It's foreigners* driving round beeping on purpose to disrupt the Lord's day. Riiight. Makes perfect sense*.

How often does she organise a prayer meeting where they add foreigners to thier prayer list of people to pray for?. Because it must be hard being persecuted because of where you were born or what you look like.

Is she organising reach out events to people who may need Christian support? 

How does she know these foreigners aren't Christian? 

Or is she part the Christians who from 1095 to 1291 fought wars against other religious groups (Muslims), with extreme violence in order to take control of "the Holy Land" going against one of the ten commandments (don't kill), resulting in the deaths 100s of 1000s of Jews Muslims and Christians ?

This might be why when we went to Lake Guarda in Italy they had a display over the lake once a week.

Postage services. Posted a few things on here, some have arrived okay but notably two have not.

One was posted with Royal Mail, hadn’t turned up so I went to the post office with the receipt to see if they could help. They tell me it’s been returned and hand it back to me… with no postmark on. How can it have been returned if it doesn’t have a postmark on? It never bloody left the office did it?

Second thing posted with DPD. They straight up lost it entirely and admitted it and said they’d refund me the money. They’ve refunded me the postage, and not the value of the item I paid extra to insure to make sure of stuff like this.

Postmarks don't exist any more, do they? The QR/barcode thing has replaced them

Sitting here quietly minding my own business, waiting for the laptop to reboot and there was an horrendous racket, thought the harmon/kardon amp linked to the laptop had taken a wobbly.

But it was the phone on the windowsill, emergency announcement from the government, not a nucular war, just an admonishment not to be lighting and fires or barbecues.

Only one I have had.  Didn't get any of the test ones.

What utter BS nonsense is going on sending a message saying "Don't be stupid" through that?

Sure, carpet bomb the country through the SMS system if you absolutely must, but the emergency alert system should absolutely be reserved for actual imminent danger to life situations.  Or people will just switch it off because of false positives.

...Also wouldn't it have been smart to send that out *before* the sequence of 30+C days rather than when it's about to cool down significantly?

As with the last tests, three phones between the two of us currently in the house, zero alerts received.
