The grumpy thread

Driving home yesterday morning, I came across a Humber Super Snipe on club rego, hooked up to the most enormous boat and trailer.  What a time to be without my camera!

Went out to the car this morning, opened the glovebox (wanted to check the radiator, as I do), and there was my camera.

The clutch in my car is really fucking boiling my piss. It's the most ridiculously easy to stall car I've ever driven. "Well you're just a shit driver" I hear you say. Maybe, but there is absolutely no feel through the pedal of when it's biting, no sound change, no struggling or anything then -off-, that and it must have about 0.5 nm of torque. The bite point is a stall. I watched the tacho today after stalling it for the 6th time in two days and was surprised to see that it actually drops to 500 RPM before stalling, without being able to feel it's biting. It's impossible to reverse park without slipping the clutch like an old giffer on the flat, if there's less than about 1500 RPM on then it just cuts out or kangaroos. Reverse parking up a hill? Ha ha ha.

That and since I had work done on it it's impossible to keep in a straight line, driving at 70 is adjust steering to right, nearly touching line, adjust steering to left, nearly touching kerb, repeat ad nauseum. It feels like each of the front wheels are pointing opposite directions. Think it might get moved on soon.

Youngest brother ( 20 years my junior, so very protective) bought a Disco 3 last week, because his Mrs just had their first baby, I know,I know, how much space does one child need etc etc.

Today he's been told it needs a torque converter and box rebuild at about £1600 plus VAT, so far so , shit happens, he's probably going to swallow it ,as even with this it'll owe him about £8k and everything else seems ok.

My grump is that the transmission specialist said that someone has recently had it flushed and filter changed,so they obviously knew it was borked. Yet this outwardly respectable- posh house,Labrador, the old" it's been a good family friend, don't really want to sell it" act, etc etc were quite happy to stitch up a young couple with a newborn baby for the sake of a couple of grand- cunts.

Human beings are like that.  Terrible things. We should just burn them all.

I've known a few picantos that stall really easily but usually when the clutch has gone heavy and dead feeling .

I do agree selling the disco is a cunts trick but people need to realise that cars like that have some massive bills with them . Just because they are cheap to buy doesn't make the running costs any less . Tell brother to get used to it on a lr product . It won't be over yet unfortunatly .

Fucking Renault espace piece of shit I own.

It was supposed to be a doer upper but it's fucked me off too many times and is too unreliable to sell for top dollar.

Listed it on eBay and it sold Sunday, all good so far.

I'd left it in my neighbours field for a couple of months and it had got a bit bogged down, then it wouldn't start, then the electric handbrake got stuck on etc etc.

I towed it out of the field today and it has now decided it wants to stay on full right lock, no amount of heaving and turning it off and on again will get the wheels to turn so it is stranded outside my neighbours driveway.

Needs tow dollying or spec lifting or hiabing or cubing

Fucking turd

To be fair, the sellers might not have known it was a serious issue - It might not have been changing fantastically well, they go the oil flushed etc to make sure it was OK for sale and that cleared it up so they were happy to sell.

But yeah twosmoke is right, owning a car like that at that stage of it's life will flipping bankrupt them and like you say, why does a couple plus one baby need a flipping Disco?

Give it a full valet before Monday, you want to get a good pre accident value

I had an assessor mark me down because a car was dirty

Thank you to the many people who suggested this. I hated cleaning up my smashed up VTS.

Opened the boot to clean in the shut line & out crawled a huge brown cockroach! I nearly jumped out of my skin!

Yeah he's aware that a Disco 3 can be a money pit, that's why I haven't got one and neither has anyone else in our predominantly Land/Range Rover driving family. For him it's a money saving move cutting down from a Nissan Patrol and petrol Audi AllRoad to one car that can do the job of both now they're down to one income for the next 12 years !

He's annoyed because he might as well just gone and bought the cheapest, tattiest one from some Pikey on eBay ( like I would!) instead he was seduced by the nice family ,gravel drive ,service history bollocks.

rover 75 disgraced itself again over the weekend.

noticed that one of the back wheels was dirty, no, not dirty, filthy black where as all the others were still reasonably clean. which i thought was odd...

turns out that the newly replaced back brakes were binding like fook, and the calliper was kippered.

£100 and a new calliper later (and i'm SO PLEASED that these are still available, unlike the vented ones on a V6 pez 75) and normal* service it seems has been resumed.

oh, and i'm driving the gay little jeep again this week. in the driving snow this morning and filthy muddy drive to the digs i think i made the right choice.

Trouble with Disco 3 its no better with the manual, the effin clutch lasts 5 minutes cos the car won't pull till the turbos spool up so every poor sod is inadvertantly slipping the clutch.

Doesn't help that they saddle a 2.6 ton motor with an underpowered engine (again) and too friggin high first and reverse gears.

He'd be better of shifting that sod on and cutting his losses.

The best of the lot were standard Chinese export spec IMO, standard auto or manual, steel springs, sensible wheels tyres, V8 NA petrol engine, carried them down to Felixstowe by the hundred, cracking bloody motors without all the fiddly bollocks that goes wrong, quick LPG conversion and you have the vehicle it should always have been here.

Flushing the box on these is pretty routine and usually cures problems. Before your brother spends too much it's worth him checking the disco3.co.uk forum - there are a few experts in the "site sponsors" section who can check the diagnosis and fix it for sensible dosh.

These are great cars and easy to keep going to intergalactic mileages - but need a grand-a-year maintenance budget. Unfortunately as they slip down into cheaper price territory the tlc is getting skimped leading to certain implosion and everyone saying "yeah those Disoveries are unreliable".

Finally, what's the mileage - be aware that it needs the crucial belt change at 105k. Specialist indies on that forum can do it. Oh, and keep an eye on the oil pump...

Interesting! I'm not sure if it feels dead or not... I've driven another 1.4 petrol but only very briefly.

It's so bad that I'm considering taking to a main stealer to see if there's an ECU software update. There's an anti stall thing going on I think because I often invoke it reverse parking but it's very slow witted - it starts revving the tits off itself when you've already saved it from stalling by dipping the clutch.

either press and hold start button (cant remember f brake pedal needs pressed) and see if there is a klunk wich will be steering releasing

A mate of mine bought an R plate Range Rover as his retirement prezzie to himself as he had always wanted one (sad isn't it), after two years and nearly £9000, yup that's £9000 not £900 in bills he sold it and bought a Mokka. A fair bit of stuff went but the cost is just so high on bits, his exhaust was a good few hundred quid whereas I have just help my mates sort his wife's 306 and the full system was £80 from eurocrapparts.
