The grumpy thread

I'm sorry for your loss. We thought my (step) grandfather was doing the same after my grandmother died in May, he was in hospital for a fortnight from the day she died, but he's pulled himself through so far.

Thanks for all the messages, she died in her sleep and my Dad found her the next morning. At least it was that way rather than a long illness or dropping dead in the middle of Tesco. Both deaths have shown me just how alone and isolated I am down here though, and can't help but wonder if things would have been different if I'd have been closer. Giving serious consideration to giving up on Plymouth and moving back to be with them

working away from home sucks.

i work 140-odd mile away from home, so i'm not here from monday to friday. and during the weeks i'm in digs, i won't rent somewhere near work cos i genuinely hate the place. Nottingham is a shit hole. and for someone from 'Boro to say that is really saying something!

after 4 and a half years i'm planning on giving the job up at the end of the year,

plan is to get my fork lift drivers license over this year, and then get something else in the new year.

i'll need to build up some secret fighting fund monies as the social won't give me my dole for 12 weeks cos i'll be leaving of my own accord, but this is no way to live. I've not got time to do the things i want to do.

shit!! i've gone and told everyone my master plan!!!

bugger.......

not that this will be of any comfort to you!

thing is, on the one hand we get told that you need to work, but for some (lot?) of people home and work ate miles apart. which is shit cos you end up with no home/work/life balance.

and second guessing yourself will not help, as you been near by will not have changed anything.

i'm trying to type something reassuring but i think i've failed..... sorry!!

It was a glorious day yesterday: cold (frosty first thing) but strong sunshine and rather pleasant, so I thought I'd take the car to my favourite car wash (not the nearest by a LONG way) as they do a fantastic job, are not expensive and it's a pleasant drive out.

By the time I was a couple of miles away, the blue skies had fucked off and it was snowing...

I thought I was already there so what the hell. Pulled in and was just about to start when I realised, no cash. No problem as the garage has a cash point... out of order. So I went in the shop and bought fags and asked for cashback (which they did last time) and got a resounding 'NO!'. Where's the nearest cashpoint that works? About another five miles thataway...

So I said sorry to the lad, told him I'd get some cash and pissed off... Finally got cash and then tried to get back the same way I'd just come but the road was now closed (big signs...) so had to detour miles. I was beginning to think 'sod this for a game of conkers...' when Mr Sun came back out, so I continued and finally got back to where I wanted to be....

And the lad was now doing a 'mini-valet' and couldn't do my car for a couple of hours!

By the time I got home, my car looks like an extra from 'ice station Zebra!'

Attn Richard Morris.

That's the part, IIRC it's £16 at the dealer.

Just ordered one £21.12 inc vat and in on Monday.

Then some womble in a 62 reg c class blocked me in for 15 minutes and didn't respond to requests to move from the reception tannoy.

Yeh, next time I'll go in the 2cv- could have squeezed though the gap in the next bay along.

I Ordered a pair of wheel bearings from a seller on ebay for my 3 door cosworth hubs, they came but we're mismatched manufacturers. Was annoyed but it didnt bother me too much, fitted them and the skf bearings are silky smooth, the powerdrive bearings are rough in rotation and tight to move, both have been fitted correctly, greased and torqued to the correct figure of 310nm, emailed them gotta wait to hear back now

Nan died yesterday, not even six weeks after my granddad. Seems like she just gave up.

Sorry for your loss

This morning was great fun having a blast in the Mercury. This afternoon less great.

Decided to pull the big outdoor cover off the Transit to put some stuff in the van. It's a high roof van so the cover is a pig to get on and off.

Anyway, I needed a stepladder to do it but couldn't be arsed going to the shed to get one. Instead I stupidly decided to try climbing the fence and standing on the top cross beam to get high enough to pull the cover back.

Of course it was frosty and the fence covered in ice, so I got to the top, both feet slipped out from under me and I fell from the roof height of the van. Landed arse first through the top of the recycling bin straight onto all the glass jars and bottles inside! My arm got trapped and bent awkwardly against the fence too.

It hurt like hell and the impact of landing knocked the wind out of me. Couldn't believe I was lucky enough to not break any of the glass or cut myself, or hit my head on the edge of the bin.

I feel like someone's kicked the shit out of me now, aching all over and my backs aching!

Glad you are ok! Just the gods of Mercury attempting revenge because you have a better car than them. They will get over it.

It's actually pretty funny now it's all over and I'm not pulling broken glass out of my arse! It's the shock of it happening though that's worst.

Still, if you do stupid things then you've got it coming. There's probably a lesson in there somewhere about not cutting corners, being lazy and stupid.

Gone up a bit then but not too extortionate, individual parts still available too.

I managed to reverse my Series 2a 109 into the side of my own Discovery earlier today :-(

I R A MASIVE TOOL.

Luckily, considering the enormous "BANG! Scrape...splinter..." noise, damage was restricted to the driver's door mirror of the Disco plus a small crease in the osr quarter panel and a broken indicator lens on the 109.

Totally my own fault. Grr.

I put a timing belt kit on my daughter's fabia SDI today. Spent £90 on a full kit because I thought it would probably need it - the car is on 170000 miles and has no record of a belt being done in recent history. I looked after it for the previous owner and his reason for getting shot was that a belt was due at 160k...

Why am I grumpy about this? When I got into it I found a belt in perfect condition with no wear and tensioner and idlers the same. Nothing at all wrong with it, it could have easily seen out the life of the rest of the car. Bollocks. Fitted the new one anyway.

Cheers scary, that makes me feel better about testing the limits of my Caddy TDi's 60k belt interval in the next few thousand miles.

Who gets rid of a car for needing a relatively cheap cambelt service?

Posted

Someone who owned a beaten up 02 plate fabia with 159k on it, whose girlfriend wanted a new car.

My mate put a new timing belt kit on my Astra, last Feb.Again nothing wrong with the old one.Side by side the both looked the same.He kept the new one on its new box,so as not to mix them up.

I did laugh at miss fake and her equally fake fiancee they probably had an I.Q that just made it into double figures if they put their heads together

Can you not say it's been stolen, our local authority will replace for free if that happens ;-)

I've put up a mezzanine floor at work, ive decided I'd get as much crap as possible up there and have got a ladder leant against it at a jaunty angle, I pick something stupidly heavy up, get 3/4 of the way up and can't do the last part.

Panic sets in, my legs buckle and I nearly fall.

The shock causes more problem than it would to fall, I've had to "sit down and have a nice cup of tea" a few times

Marvins Mom - go sick Monday, then book a fork lift licence on a Visa card. Then hunt around for a job or otherwise you will never do it!

Go for reach and counterbalance, off-road and on road up to 10 tonne, then ring the slaughter houses. They pay well for telehandler drivers, I know because I got that close... I did my ticket in 2001 so I guess it's void now, but I drove quite a few machines. The jump that led to me driving fork lifts accidently, led to other better things.
