Just eaten a whole packet of bourbon creams. Feel a bit sick now...

We can synchronise vom if it helps.

It seems mildly ludicrous to put a picture on the internet (in a downloadable format) then get cross when folk download/re-use it without 'attribution', is that not like lying down on the M6 then complaining about getting run over?

i heard a similar argument from a car owner who took a picture of his car put it on a public forum for every man and his dog to see then when a company took a shining to his picture and they blanked the numberplate off and used it as an example of the car that they make replacement side decals for, unfortunately with this one though the guy spat his dummy out and threw his toys right out of the pram demanding they dont use his car, personally i wouldve been happy that they liked my car so much that they would want to use it to advertise and maybe seen if i could blag a full set of replacement decals f.o.c or something off them for using my car

This is why I'm all for the 'Creative Commons licence' that Dugong mentioned. The fella who put a picture of his car upon a public/private forum intended the use of that photo for people to look at. As far as I'm concerned, the company were wrong to use his picture without his permission, on top of that, they are using his photo to make money from. I guess all the car owner would have wanted was to be asked permission if nothing else, which really is why these laws exist.

its a bit writing a book and having a film company make a film based on the book but not paying you any royalties.

I once had an American TV company ask me whether they could use a picture of my Rover Sterling in thier television show about the best and worst cars in history or summat along those lines. I asked them what is was going to be used for and they admitted that it was going to be used in the 'worst cars' bit of thier programme. I politely declined them permission to use my photo. Whether they actually did I don't know but if they had, I would be mildly bothered about it.

Just because something is out on the public forum, doesn't mean it can be taken and modified without the owners expressed permission. Yeah it all sounds a bit draconian and over bearing but it's there to stop people profiteering from your work/taking the piss.

A commercial company is a bit different. If they're gaining from the use of an image, they should contact the copyright holder and ask permission and stump up if requested to.

Did they use your avatar as an advert? That one must've passed me by.

Who gives a shit about 'rights' to daft pictures?

I would have done the same as you.

Ah, so if I borrow your wife, girlfriend, boyfriend and use them you won't mind either. The basic rule is if it isn't yours you shouldn't be using it without proper attribution or acknowledgement or direct link back to its source. Anything else is theft.

Everything comes at a cost nowadays. While I didn't take the pic, I did pay rather a lot of money to acquire it and that means, while I'm happy for it to be used in a non commercial way, it is so easy to keep the original source that links directly back to me so that, if someone wishes to use it commercially, they can. Companies that produce books and magazines don't do it for nothing so why should they get to steal my property for nothing. And, yes, I work in publishing and I use images from Flickr and other sources but always ask permission, attribute the pic to a source and pay a fee, even if that fee is just a free book.

My only issue is removing the context of where the picture has come from, not in it's reposting on another forum. Everything I use from the internet in an Internet forum can be directly linked back to its source.

Bf Goodrich's advertising agency wanted this picture.

Stuck Zuk by Tayne, on Flickr

Now despite working for a multinational that turned over in excess of €21million last year they "didn't have a budget" for images.

Needless to say that image has never been used in a tyre commercial...

It's no 'Frontera up Snowdon' though.

I wouldn't load my wife on the t'interweb and if i did I would not want to be known as the source so that people could come back to me and complain.

We'll be the judge of that, pictures or STFU.

Anyhoo, in other news, the Blingo now has another bent panel after a myopic twat clipped the tailgate with his mirror, trying to squeeze a 7.5 tonner 'beginners truck' into a gap that simply wasn't there.  Just the roof that's straight now - and that's mostly glass.

Twat: "We're blocking traffic.  I'll pull in past the junction."

Me: "I look like I was born yesterday?  We'll exchange details here, sunshine."

So if you were held up at about 2.30pm yesterday, townbound on Bristol Rd., Brum, where it crosses the Middleway... sorry about that.

The point is well made by MO and I get it. It's a bit of a minefield though because every picture and photograph on the internet must belong to someone and it's nigh on impossible to credit the owner of most.

I've never had one of my picasa images used to my knowledge, I feel left out now!

I've had problems with my images, I don't mind them being shared but if your going to use all of them then at least have the decently to credit me, a few years back one of those Ford based Facebook group filled their whole page up with my photos, when I said I didn't mind but please credit me he said "Fuck off, you posted them first so I can do what I like with them"... thankfully after I kicked off a shit storm and others started backing me up the admin member quit and a new one took over.

I can't complain as I just use images off the web when needed and how many of us have asked Ebay sellers if we can pinch their pictures?

Well it costs 10 squid to list a car on ebay so who's going to complain if a few forums share pics which adds extra free interest.

Dear eBay user Ivedonelifeformurderingsomeonewholookedatmynansshoesinafunnymanorandiliveonthesameestateasyou, please can I use that picture of your chavved up Nissan Genocide pickup with 22" chrome wheels and completely ridicule you? Best regards, eBay user Keyboardconan.

I remember that. What a dummy-spitting drama queen he was, claiming you sent him a load of abuse which he'd "deleted". You weren't asking for a massive fee, just a mention. Usually sharing an image on FB provides a link back to its original source - it's easier than downloading and re-loading an image, too - strikes me as odd that they didn't do it in this way.

Facebook groups are one of the worst things to happen to the Internet in my humble opinion. I left loads of them last night and my feed is now gloriously unsullied. More worrying than the opinions is the depressingly low standard of English.

I'm going back to using Facebook for what it was intended for - keeping in touch with friends who've moved.

Very sensible, a couple of years ago a Polish guy in a Renault Magnum wiped out my e39 on the M1. When we collected the bits and were about to move up into a 'refuge' layby thing . One of the HA guys jumped in the cab with Kristof the suddenly totally non-English speaking lorry driver. I asked if this was normal ' Yes, we have to ,they just fuck off otherwise and the Police can't be arsed to track them down'

It's a common grump of mine these Facebook groups, almost every day there's someone spitting their dummy out (I have been guilty this myself) or posting content that has no interest to anybody, I've sacked a few off but there's still a few I'm on as every once in a while someone posts a car or something that is worth looking at.

I run a local Facebook car club group and that's going from strength to strength, this Sunday I've arranged a club stand at a local show and we should have a 20-30 car convoy to the show! We never have any problems even with nearly 800 members and the content is nearly always spot on so it can be done.

ah but the link to the pics takes you straight to Ebay. That's fine - proper attribution, etc.

How can we justify one shite picture then there's no link to the source they were taken from??

helping some friends re-commision their 1933 MG j2 Midget. Oil was as black as a black hole and there was feck all oil in th diff and gearbox (SAE 140). I had to get hold of 2 rad hoses and suitable clips. I phoned the main specialist and just ordered them, asking if the could do it all next day. Wasn't a problem. Later on I realised that I hadn't asked the price. I wasn't too bothered, couple of rubber hoses and some clips. About 10 to 15 quid for the hoses and a couple of quid for the clips. Not a problem. Spoke to my steam engine mate this afternoon and asked him how much it came to.

£116 fecking, bastrad, knobbing quid!!!!!! What, were they carved out of South American blocks by virgins? They can order their own fucking parts next time. It seems that I suddenly went very pale during the conversation. Still, said friends have now refunded me as agreed before hand. Thank fuck.
