FACTOID. Bus drivers CAN'T reverse. Lorryists CAN ;).

WAR!!!

Nah, you're right. Bus drivers are hopeless as they never need to. Coach drivers are only slightly better. I practice regularly so I'm not too shabby

One acronym to the pair of you that we can both agree on VOSA.

Bus drivers round here reverse out of the bus station, although it used to be fun spotting all the bent metal barriers where it had clearly gone wrong. They arent a bad bunch and I seem to get the more experienced ones on this route, although one of them once had a go at me for not having a light when he had to brake hard for the bus stop in the dark. Pretty sure you should be considering the possibility of passengers at stops.

Have they forgotten what they were taught, or have they simply never passed a UK test? I blame the parents... (well everyone else does, )

I'd hate to be a bus driver for lots of reasons, mainly people, the size of the bus and all the responsiblity. I couldn't do that job. Or trucking, much respect.

However the bus drivers round here scare me. I've seen the aftermath of about 4 bus accidents in 2 years in an area covering about 10 miles. Seems like a high incidence to me. Twice now there have been tyre tracks on the grass roundabout where the bus has gone straight over, literally... and this is a roundabout where the exits are either left or right

I've seen one bus trying to race another (tailgating, pulling out to the otherside of the road and attempting overtakes) and perhaps the most shocking was a bus driver holding a mobile to his ear with one hand while drinking from a 2l pop bottle with the other :o He was going too fast to get the company name or route number!

When I was unfortunate enough to drive limos for a living I found that truck drivers would give me space, bus drivers didn't seem to grasp that a car 33ft long with a 30 ft wheelbase doesn't turn particularly well.

Later on, when I was no longer driving 'em, but still involved in the business it was obvious that truckers could drive the limo, but every bus driver we sent out in the thing would come back with the o/s scraped between the doors. Blind spot that bus drivers didn't seem to understand.

Truck drivers are a different league from my experience. Bus drivers are apparently useless.

Baaaah! I meant the individual stands. Like so, in this mega old photo from 2004.

I once had a driver who smoked whilst driving. Last year. Funny.

Bus drivers round here seem ok on the whole. They always wave thanks or thumbs up when you let them out (which I always do, I imagine they are surprised when a BMW driver does this) and when I have travelled on them they are usually polite.

On another note, thanks to immediate effects of government cuts I am down to about 10 hours a week.

Worse for a friend of mine, a teacher at a local college, he has had his wages cut by 50% (yes 50%) as of next month. He may have to move back into his parents house.

It seems they don't want people to work anymore, if i wasn't leaving in January I would have to sign on. GR8 4 ECONOMIC RECOVERY

NOT! That's worth a fine, both for him and his employer, and rightly so. I'm sure I told the story on another thread, of how the first half-hour or more of my workday was often wasted in having to clean out a cab I'd just been given, so that it was fit for my dirty boots. All because people can't control their suicidal pyromania for an hour or so (deliveries were rarely further apart than that). Can anyone tell me why so many of the messy bastards had to hand-roll? As if the ash wasn't enough...!

I used to see that quite frequently on the Norwich ring road late at night - buses would race each other back to the depot. I always used to like seeing a Dennis Dart and a Volvo B10 in a traffic light GP - the light would go green and the Dart would leap away in a frenzy of low gearing and demented hairdryer buzzing, then a couple of seconds later the B10 would come on song with a growl and a puff of black smoke and would bugger off into the distance leaving the Dart looking faintly silly.

A mate of mine's a bus driver, and I don't envy him it. I wouldn't have a problem handling the motors, but I don't know how I'd cope with even half the abuse he gets. I've been offered PCV training a few times, always knocked it back...

I've not long had one of my agents on the phone, spitting feathers about the 'master' agency who are contracted to supply agency drivers to Tesco. I'm down a shift (painful, as I only work part-time while my other half's doing art+design at college), and he's asking me if I've noticed anything odd going on at Tesco's. Well, says I, they haven't stopped treating the agency drivers like shit, so no. No change over the previous 8 years of agency driving.

Both Tesco and Asda have taken to block booking drivers, then losing a few at the 11th hour. Supposing you do get a shift, it'll be the shit jobs their drivers don't want, and you'll get a 6 hour shift out of it. What is the point of me not having a life, so I can get to bed early, to get up at 0345 (as I did this morning) and work for 6 hours? I might as well sign on, but instead, here am I trying to preserve a bit of dignity in life, only for the fucking office staff to stiff me.

This could go on for hours, ranting away, but it isn't worth it. I still love my job, despite it all. I just wish some of the people who matter felt the same.

And yeah, I treat these mega-stretch limos like trucks. I give them plenty of space, and flash them in, on the motorway. Kudos for getting those things round city centres! At least mine bends in the middle...

they hand roll because they cant afford fags on their meagre wages

Hand roll with liquorice papers too. I was the only person on the bus and I cba to report anyone, last time I did anything about complaining I got a free dayrider gold anyway, just because the bus was 2 minutes early haha.

I got my lorryists license in 1997.Took my test in Cambridge and got marked down twice for being over cautious towards cyclists. So with my nice new license I signed on with a couple of agencies. As has already been mentioned all I got were the jobs the perminant drivers didn't want. After a monthI decided I needed some sort of social life back so packed it in.On Saturday I got the renewal forms through from doovla, well I haven't driven a lorry since 1997 and reading some of these posts I don't think I will bother renewing.A photo license,a medical and filling out forms..erm..no thank's.

It's alright for you, TB, you have bigger roads and more of them to play on. We are all forced onto the same 4 square inches of Tarmac and have to pay handsomely for that little bit...!

Hardly an addition to the drivers grumps...

I drive a city bus, my Bosse's name is above the door, and I call him by his first name

There ARE only 4 staff in the office, The boss, the office lady and 2 bus controllers who share the job.

In the morning I go in, check my allocated route, get in my allocated bus and get to work.

In the evening leave the bus in line for the wash and cleaners, I usually pick up the rubbish to help the cleaners (tonight that was about 12 tickets and a few sweet wrappers)

Get out ,cash up and go home.

good company good workmates mostly good customers.

And I CAN drive in reverse.

The fleet is good too, mostly Fuso Rosa 20 seaters, a few Optare 20 seaters and a couple of small MAN's.

Small co, small city, small busses Life is good :D:D

one question... why do they have a "bus stop" square painted on the road if they insist on leaving their arse stuck out in the road so nobody can pass by them  maybe they should paint the square at an angle away from the kerb

Posted

I let buses out. You're supposed to defer to them in the Highway Code.

Unless I'm three quarters of the way past them (as they take on and finish taking fares from passengers) and then they stick their indicators on and expect me to drop back. Then they can fuck off.

norm is a specialist in his field, not the sort of person usually associated with the word twat......

i was just trying to illustrate that norm is a man with a great deal of knowledge and experience to share, rather than some spotty 15 year old with a wiki copy and paste fetish.

A5, dunno what FD's issue with me is. He prominently announced in the Ryton Thread he'd be programming me as a "Foe" so's not to read my scratchings. Thought we'd finally get relief from the wee ankle biter. But, no, he rises to try to troll me in every thread. Whatever...

hey thanks norm - just added him as foe and now i dont have to read his drivel :D

Norm, yes, my truck started out as a 5th-wheel version (or "artic" as we know them) but was stretched before I joined, to make the long flat you see now. The third (lifting, non-driven) axle was added at the same time, as was the crane. The flat was demountable, and it was a right old game changing them over!

Grumpy? When I returned to work after more than 5 months off with a back injury, I found my truck had been returned to Head Office in my absence and the crane removed. Is that a way to treat a man with a recovering back?

On the plus side, this having been an artic unit meant I got a 380-bhp engine and 16-speed gearbox. I only ever used 7, and mostly about 5!
