The grumpy thread

I buy one every year, and often forget to wear it. But it's a couple of quid for the Legion, money well spent. A mate refuses to buy one, citing that the Remembrance Day event is a sham with the likes of Blair etc there. I disagree - I don't buy one for them, it's for all the poor sods who ended up dead due to shithead politicians playing war games.

I’m just having a similar discussion on FB with a friend who is glad that seann is off of Strictly because he snogged the fitty in an alleyway.

It would seem many women are offended and upset on behalf of his ex girlfriend. When I said there are two people who are allowed to be offended, and you are neither, it was received as well as a fart in a lift.

I didn’t see any of the previous fall out on here so can’t comment. But I do get grumpy about people being offended on behalf of others, and that’s my grump.

Being offended makes people feel like their opinions matter, hence why people are so keen to be offended. In reality being offended does fuck all.

Girlfriend_70s was also very angry about Seann off Strictly, mostly about the fact he exists. Frankly I couldn't give a shit that some bloke that I don't know exists and did something dodgy somewhere.

But you are....*stops as we're not allowed a sense of humour since 1986*

Is it an issue if I call myself a fat cripple? Do I need to get offended now?

Stephen Fry sums up being offended perfectly

“It's now very common to hear people say, 'I'm rather offended by that.' As if that gives them certain rights. It's actually nothing more... than a whine. 'I find that offensive.' It has no meaning; it has no purpose; it has no reason to be respected as a phrase. 'I am offended by that.' Well, so fucking what."

I'm with her on that. I would describe him as the poor man's Justin Lee Collins but that position has already been filled by Justin Lee Collins.

That's just it. I know it's slightly different because of the reasons for the event but I caught a picture of the Invictus games and everyone had a poppy on. And to me, that just looks staged. Had those people all happened to have chosen to wear a poppy a full 3 weeks before remembrance by chance? Same with the news and things. If everyone in the studio is wearing one it just looks a bit suspect to me, are they being made to wear it? Are they wearing it because they know the wrath they will receive if it's spotted that they aren't? None of these reasons respect the meaning of the gesture. I don't presume these people are not respectful and are just doing it for show but I do think that it dilutes the symbolism and possibly the meaning. It would be much better in my opinion if poppies were reserved for the days surrounding the 11th of November Remembrance Sunday. And I don't presume that anyone not wearing one doesn't care or is ungrateful for the sacrifices made during conflicts.

I don't wear one because it like everything else around me will immediately look like its been dragged through a hedge backwards whilst being drenched in 10w40.  I consider it disrespectful to display one in that state so I don't.

Will everyone please stop getting offended by things, it's dragging all the humour away from the site.

Preach!...

...IT ISN'T A THING HERE!

Nor should it be something to aspire to.

You could say precisely the same thing about saying 'Preach'. It's a ridiculous Americanism which dilutes and bastardises our language. Speak however you like, but at least try and be consistent.

Have I logged onto mumsnet by mistake?

Don't think the thread needed to be re-named. As a man, who is grumpy and old, I'm talking back the phrase grumpy old man. Like the N-word, I am one, so I'll say it as much as I like. On the other hand, I wouldn't want grumpy youngs, womens, or anyone else who might have a valid grump feeling like they couldn't contribute.

Having said that, it's my belief that nobody feels like that here. I can imagine that, as a completely random example, anyone in a minority might feel a little uncomfortable on Pistonheads, I hope here isn't like that.

I think, for a car forum at least, we have quite a mix of genders, sexualitys, and politics. Doesn't seen to be quite the same spread of races for some reason.

there's football on today and the pub is full of arseholes already :(

is the game so dull that they need to get drunk before kickoff ?

Yes. More generally, people who go to pubs for specific events are cunts. Regulars can also be cunts, but people who only go to the pub for football/Christmas/etc are, almost without exception, loud, boring, unfunny cunts, who should be exterminated.

Whilst I am totally not on board with people being ‘offended’ and think they should all pipe the fuck down, I also really despise the term ‘banter’. Like it’s some get out of jail free card for saying whatever the hell you like regardless if it’s racist, sexist, whateverelseist.

I just think the term banter is generally used by cunts after they’ve been cunts

I'm not offended.

Earlier on  - cat was acting strangely, I was frying a few potatoes, door bell rang, Policeperson asked when I'd last seen neighbour, said I'd last chatted to them a few days ago.

Puts things into perspective,  that's the last time I'll chat to them.

When is it okay to be offended? Is it ever okay to be offended? It'd be good to get an idea from Captain Self-righteous.

I think the most 'offended' people are often the ones who have perceived that someone else is offended about something they think is trivial and live in an endless cycle of outrage.

Quite. 'Banter' is now the cover-all phrase to excuse offensive jokes, bullying, and generally being an arsehole. In my day people said 'e's only avin' a larrrrrrrffffff' when they wanted to explain away why they were being cunts.

If you’re talking to me you can get offended whenever the hell you like, just don’t expect any special dispensation from anyone else just because you are.

Chill out R. Masters. The preach thing was a bit of a light-hearted thing, it's not some I use in every day speech. I though we were supposed to not take ourselves too seriously around here.

Anyway, unlike Black Friday which has been readily and happily adopted and accepted across the country. I don't think I have heard anyone other than my sister employ "preach" through the medium of a gif on messenger very occasionally. Not really comparable, useless I am missing its usage somewhere/everywhere, in which I apologize.

As a woman it never occurred to me to be upset or offended by the title of this thread, I got the point that it was more a description of the state of mind rather than anything else. But I will quickly add the caveat that I don't expect to be taken as meaning I expect everyone else to feel thd same way... For fear of upsetting all those having undergone the recent mass sense of humour bypass.

Fuck sake. Folk offended on here now. If don't like move on. Too many folk getting offended for no good reason. I get called fat and a cripple but I don't give a shit. Can we all eat nice?

"Banter". "It was just banter" or worse: "bants". Urgh.

In the news this very day.

"...and just why didn't you mention to your billionaire boss that you didn't find his jokes (or banter) funny?"

Hmm, the original title does stereotype males of a certain age and puts them in a negative light ( grumpy - not a pleasure to be around - to be avoided if you’re having a good day) (old - past they’re prime, served their purpose, worn out) so you could argue that it’s men that should be offended by the original title.

On the whole offence malarkey. Yeah, it is wrong to offend someone but unfortunately it’s those who become offended on behalf of the target off offence who have bought it all into disrepute. Look, you say something to my black wife about her skin colour and sex in a negative light. It’s her right to be offended about that and would rightly take action against the offender but it’s not my right as a white male to be offended for her. I would still remove said offenders windpipe with an axe but that would be because I’m defending my wife and I think the offender was a racist bigot that should be removed forthwith from the gene pool but not because I’m offended by the statement.

Confusing isn’t it?

This all seems utterly ridiculous. I didn't like one particular phrase. Was I offended by it? I guess so. Was I standing up for women because I felt they were being unfairly targetted? No, it's just a shitty thing to say that I don't think has any relevance in modern society. Now the thread title has been updated and feels like the whole place is going mad. I'm going back to the Grin thread. It's happy there.

What era Disco? When I had mine, it tried earthing the engine through the handbrake cable. Made a right sodding mess of the cable! Apparently, it's a trick they like doing.

Yes, my last one spent it's last 6 months with no handbrake( because the melted outer caused it to stick on) and a cheap set of jump leads earthing the starter and block straight to the battery. It also had no exhaust from down pipe back, drove and sounded OK, couldn't understand why Mrs N wouldn't drive it!

Mrs V8 received a email yesterday from someone claiming they had hacked her email account, quoting her password.

Demanding 800 bitcoins.

Also stating do not contact the police.

oh passwords changed.

I got one too, various statements and assorted drivel.

I just deleted it and blocked the sender.

Sorry, the 'Preach' thing came across as being his you were actually speaking rather than a sarcastic piss take.

Is AS not somewhat out of step with this anyway? None of us is sexist/racist (I fucking despise that worthless, overused word) so would the mods kindly revert the thread title? Thanks awfully.
