The grumpy thread

I think the Somercotes cortina is no more. I seen the old boy climbing out of a battered T plate Passat Estate yesterday parked in exactly the same please the cortina was.

I'm fairly sure that car insurance premiums are set according to the whim of Colin the actuarial horse. I've just moved house. Half a mile up the road, same post code. I currently pay just under £300 with Tesco, and for the month left on my policy they wanted a whole £1 (plus the obligatory £20 admin fee, presumably to reflect the cost of a bored sounding Scottish guy spending 15 seconds punching in my new post code and house number into his computer).

So, let's get a quote from them for next year's insurance then, I'll have another year's no claims after all.

Oh.

£1700.

Cheapest I can make it is £550, only two companies will give me a price south of a grand. On a beige diesel Xantia, 8000 miles a year, no business use, for a 33 year old with a clean licence and 8 years no claims.

Doesn't sound like I'm replacing it with anything more interesting for a while then...

Also, bought a 1/43 Cadillac on ebay, and MrsR spotted an incoming email telling me it's been sent. Both her shoulders are positively arctic now. "Not another one!" FFS woman, it's only ONE, and not even a very big one at that. Also, it was only the price of a magazine. And if that wasn't enough, it isn't even coming straight here, it's going to my mate's house, from where I was, er, hoping I could sneak it in.... All she can see nowadays is "more mess for our Paul to sort out when you've gone." Well ok, but I haven't died yet, despite the best efforts of my medication.

I hadn't realised how stressed I get when I go outside my comfort zone. I spent a long weekend in the company of lots of horses and horsey people and autoshite was down for most of it. To be fair the people weren't that bad (although a bit horse obsessed) and I did redeem myself by freeing off the gear change linkage on my sister's Renault (say no more) horsebox, it's just I'm completely shattered after having to try to be polite and sociable for four days. My sleep pattern and digestion are completely shot. I'm currently self-medicating with dry martinis, but have run out of olives hence grumpy, but at least I have all the dogs back. I shall not go on eBay as I fear the consequences, although I may not remember this later. (My drinks are quite lethal)

Edited to add, do not try chopping veg while pissed.

There's a place in Warrington who repair them '£85-£400' but if it's anything over the bottom estimate I'll just get another second hand frame.

I have a small planet x carbon bike knocking about with some mavic rims that could be had for £250. Its a smallish frame though.

I'm still unemployed. Getting a job is a nightmare, can't even seem to make it through to an interview. You'd think a college education + 5 years of work in an industry with consistent progression would be the makings of a half decent CV but I can't even get a job stacking supermarket shelves or working on a production line.

Hoping to hear back for one particular job at Tennants this week which would be perfect if I got it, was looking fairly promising but I'm running out of time. Gonna' try and get the Civic fixed and sold by the end of the month to get some survival money together,  its my only possession of any actual worth despite the fact it'll only net me about £800 if I'm lucky once you minus the repair costs.

It sucks, I've been out of work for nearly two months and money is now dwindling...

What the FUCK is wrong with supposedly intelligent people these days?

A bloke at work, is married and has 2 small kids.  They own 2 normal cars, a Golf and a 207. Nothing wrong with either.

They both work full time and that means £400 a month on Nursery fees.

His wife thinks he should get a newer car. More practical, bigger, perhaps an X3.  He doesn't want to because her budget is too small, and "you can't buy a decent car under £20K these days"

By decent he means something with heated seats, leather, an 10 inch sat nav, and keyless entry, and less than 3 years old. Oh and 4 x4 for no reason other than "they tend to be bigger, and we need the space"

That my friends is someone about 30 years old working in the NEW klair industry with a Masters Degree.

Even the bloke in the office with a 17 reg 5 litre V8 Jag thought he was mad. (He's 65 and fucking loaded and only comes to work to fund 4 cruises a year)

If you want me to "review" your CV, I'd be happy to have a look.

I did this for a mate, whose CV was so shite that there was no surprise in the length of his unemployment. After my review and spin (but no actual lies) and rewrite he had 3 proper job offers in 3 weeks.

I've seen a couple of horse riders with those. I just say good morning as usual. No antagonism either way.

I HEART Planet X stuff, but would need an XL frame. Cheers though.

Charlie had croup - again. Back into hospital. I stayed overnight - lying on a mat next to his cot.He is out now - I hoped to go back in work tonight but six hours sleep since Sunday has put pay to that. I feel guilty for having time off.

Had an ftp in my Jag......coolant level light came on so I stopped asap. Opened the bonnet and feckin coolant all over the place.

Turns out a part of the top hose has failed. Common fault apparently.....as I found when googling the part while waiting for Mrs Alf to pick me up.

Top hose is actually made up of a big lump of plastic with about 4 hoses that feed into it....2 of which come with it.

Not available separately. Nearly hundred quid.

For a fecking hose and a bit of plastic.

Followed a tractor in a 60mph A road, so wide he took a foot of the opposite carriageway, no brake lights or indicators, fucking guesswork gets on my tits. I'm tempted to apply to get a job in dvsa enforcement in the next ten years when I'm older and wanting a bit of safe work so I can take out my frustration of people taking the piss on the roads. I'll be handing out prohibitions like werthers

Is there an aluminium alternative?

Don't think so......none of the specialist seem to offer one. Do you know of one? It just the top hose on a 3 litre petrol.....2005

It is 12 years old but such a simple failure could lead to it being properly cooked. As is often the case it didn't over heat on the gauge because the sensor is not in water. A case of it simply being past its design life I suppose.

C2 up and running. Everything seems fine and nothing leaking. Took it a spin and all is well so used it to go to work. On way home manager rings and tells me where my front wheel was is a slick of fresh oil. Pull up expecting a drive shaft seal to be kippered but oh no, the bloody sump has thrown the towel in and decided to leak like a BP tanker. It had surface corrosion on it before but it has a sort of skid plate welded to it which looks like the seam is leaking. Oh fucking joy.

Just want to get a fucking good moan about tomorrow's weather in early and celebrate the fact that there's still a decent place to do it.

All I want to do is buy some stuff in b and q, but the combination of their broad incompetence and a makita 'extra tough radio for extra tough builders' at full volume at the trade point counter has turned a hoped for efficient shop experience into a maximum stress farce. Grr.

My last game at the old Lane today, or in its current state.

So many years, games, memories, my family first went to Spurs in the 70's when it was about 50p to get in, how times change. But it was odd and slightly sad feeling leaving for the last time today,

So the government may look at a scrappage scheme for old diesel cars?

Do they not realise that people need 50mpg cars to get to their minimum wage zero hour jobs? How about stop taxing fuel to death you greedy twats?

Posted

I'm wondering how this will all pan out seeing as Derby is on the list. Buses, taxis, my works van and numerous other delivery vehicles all diesel along with the audi, bmw, vw cars scattered across the city. Will also limit me from having a diesel in the future as i refuse to pay to get in and still pay the extortionate parking too.

My insurance rang me the other day. Put my insurance premium up from 40 a month to 53 a month for a fault claim made against me in February last year and wanted to know why I didn't declare it. I didn't know about this fault claim and the only accident I've had was in the bloody van and that certainly wasn't a fault claim yet apparently it's on file against me.

Posted

Well deliveries won't be a problem - your boss will pay you back if you have to pay to get into town in the line of duty, so effectively it will simply add a little bit onto the P&P of whatever it is someone's bought. Which again isn't a bad thing, it probably evens the field to stop Amazon and eBay taking over the world with cut price shit straight to your door. Encourage people to maybe step foot in a town centre once in a while.

So how will they get there? Park and Ride works well - in Nottingham they've got plenty of sites dotted around, and electric buses or trams. Admittedly trams aren't for everyone, they're a bugger to install but a decent bus P&R gets rid of a lot of issues.

Posted

Nottingham has a lot of electric buses. Trouble with me is I really don't like using the park and ride. No good for just nipping to motor factors or collecting a shonky lawn mower.
