Woah, that looks seriously quick...

Out of the 2 it Would certainly be the GBS for me, the other one looks slightly out of proportion.

I Assume these have to have iva tests?

yep, and it's suprisingly expensive :( best part of 600 notes and you have to pay for a retest if it goes badly.

but imagine the satisfaction of getting a pass and going for your first legal blast :)

Going off that vid, I'm not sure there's a need for a turbo. I'm not sure I'd be a passenger in that if you paid me!

apparently mr muscle oven cleaner is good for shifting baked on oil and gunk - I'll give it a go and report back

Dr. Magic from Poundland/Home Bargains etc is really good, I usually have 3 or 4 cans in stock

Good work.

If I was going for an MX-5 based kit, I'd go for the SPR1. A rare well resolved kit car design.

Blackwell Sports Cars SPR1

BRAKE UPGRADE

Give your SPR1 that OEM look behind the wheels with a 4 pot upgrade. Using Subaru Impreza brake calipers and custom made brackets. We simply remove some of the letters cast into the caliper to match the kit brand. A great way of fooling people into believing this is no kit car but an factory built sports car.

So it's a purely cosmetic kit, aimed at "fooling" people into thinking it's an exotic sprouts car.  It does look well proportioned, but I don't understand why you would.

Oooh - an MX5 thread! I'll follow this.

Had a few MX5's myself, recently got back into them in the form of a Supercharged MK1. Very fun indeed. They're very addictive cars.

I rolled the front section out for a bit of a tickle with the oven cleaner :

no, that isn’t the ‘before’ that is the ‘after’ shot. one bottle of mr muscles finest was no match for the oily gunk coating everything down there. another trip to the shops required I think :)

Paraffin is cheaper and works really well at cutting through old shite oil.

Do you want some petrol to clean it with? ?

Posted

I hadn’t thought of petrol, there’s probably a litre or so left in the tank - will give it a go tomorrow :)

What model was w624 vra was it a r-ltd?

I think the exocets are quality. There is a turbocharged fluro yellow one on one of the mx5 groups and it looks like so much fun. Have you seen the off road version that is similar to the Ariel Nomad?

the dark blue one M624VRA ? It was a fairly rare g-limited, 1.8 with a torsen diff, momo steering wheel and rather nice alcantara type seats. Unfortunately rusty as a pig underneath, I bought it in the dark in the rain, didn't bother to check the sills - oops !

Those rear lights have been used to great effect.

They're from a VW up!

I had a surprise visit from @DVee8 this morning which confused the arse off me as I haven't met him before and was expecting someone else ! he cast an expert eye over the chaos in garage gm and gave it the thumbs up, I suspect his bored looking son waiting in the car was less impressed. Very nice to meet you, will definitely need to arrange a beer sometime :)

A sensible person would have drained the tank before removing it from the shell :)

IMG_8732.thumb.JPG.195dd3c1ec406a36edfe740fc8ab3a25.JPG

the last couple of litros drained nice and clear so I'm happy there's no sludgy gunk in the bottom of the tank

I used a bit of petrol to clean the sludgy gunk off the gearbox casing which I forgot to take photos off - I'll finish off tomorrow as the petrol  fumes were getting a bit serious in the garage this afternoon.

i freed off all of the front subframe bolts ready for further dismantling tomorrow, they put up a fight but I got them all except for a really stubborn balljoint bolt that sheared, hopefully not a problem as it's fairly flush to the wishbone so should just slide out anyway.

Nice. I had a g-ltd a couple of years ago that was pretty modified but also had rusty sills but was great. Fastest standard car out of the ones in our group. Iam just about to start on an r-ltd though. Hasn't got the BBS wheels, needs welding and the bilsteins need some work.

I probably have a spare wishbone depending on what you need - I got a set ready for AVO.

Btw look how much a fucked na is sold for

that's still reasonable if you were looking for a breaker, sell the coilers and the roll bar and you've got most of your money back already.

I'll get back to you on the wishbone situation - the gbs zero has it's own wishbones as part of the kit

right then, what have I been up to today ?

first up, I split the gearbox off the engine

I knocked up a little trolley to make shifting it around a bit easier

IMG_2168.thumb.JPG.5bdbfeb7f96ac982deea6619d350ffa6.JPG

bolted it on the end of the 'box

EXTERMINATE !! EXTERMINATE !!

I'll wheel it outside tomorrow and give it some serious cleaning

the steering and suspension came apart without too much of a struggle

parts all labelled up and stashed before a marathon cleanathon

IMG_2175.thumb.JPG.420a38c8d942b17749d41b7295d19a68.JPG

which means that finally, we have an engine

everything is still filthy but now it's in manageable chunks, I can get stuck in and make it nice :)
